Guy here in Ohio called me last night about a one owner 1961 Pink Surrey. It's been in storage since 1982 and has just over 7,000 miles on it. He is bringing it to the reunion and it is for sale. He's just not sure how much!

It runs fine, he had to put a new fuel pump on. It has all of the side curtains and the original fuel pump. Some slight surface rust under the fender and on the driver's floor.

Wow! Can we get any more info on the owner of this fine looking Surrey, like the owner's name, the serial number on the Surrey and more photos. Lots of photos! Thanks Bob for alerting us to this neat little Jeep.

Serial Number 56337 19058

I don't have the owner's name, but can get it. It can be seen this weekend in Beachwood, Ohio 3355 Richmond Rd., Unit 211 at Spaces Consignment.

Here are some more photos he sent me.

I sure hope one of you guys can get this. It deserves a good home. I'd get it myself, but you know things get in the way!

Looks like $10,000 +/- $3000 is my guess. Does he also have the side curtains? That would be a plus.

Hi guys-

The best figures I have for a total number on Surreys is between 1,087 and 1,100, which I have seen in several places. I think this might include all the Galas that were built for export use in Mexico, St. Thomas and Hawaii, but not necessarily the DJ3As that were put in use by Las Brisas, as those were base DJ3As with the pink and white color motif, but not the full Surrey package.

As for how many parts Surreys are out there, I have no idea. Many of them were repainted, bodies put on 4WD chassis , or left to rot out side. I can account for 5 running/restored Surreys in the metro Phoenix area (4 pink and 1 blue, mine) and a pink Surrey belonging to Senator John McCain's wife Cindy that they keep up in the Sedona area. That one belonged to singer Alan Jackson.

Steve, if you want to give any of this information to Mike at KW, that is fine with me. IF we can get more parts information and interchangeability info, that would be great. Bruce has a pretty good handle on the parts numbers and interchangeability.

This barn find Surrey is pretty nice for being kept in a barn all these years. If we can get the name of the current owner and if it sells, the name of the new owner, I will add that info to my database on DJ3As. I did add the number 56337 19058 and I also have listed 56337 19055, a pink Surrey that has made the rounds of the various classic car dealers, listed as a 1964, or a 1963 or even a 1960. Those dealers are wanting anywhere from $40K to about $48,000 for that Jeep. I downloaded the photos from here and have them in a folder that I keep on DJ3As and Surreys.

Keep up the good conversation guys!

Colin,

Are those numbers for Surreys only? or totals all Dj3A's?

FYI...I sent in about 30 pics of my parts with numbers visible for their usage if anyone needs the numbers as related to the KW parts list. I also included the parts I have already ordered and used to verify fit. If needed, contact Rachael, the editor, who has the data and said she would help.

She was real appreciative, but couldn't get Mike to agree to add Dj's to the catalog listings. He claims Dj's are "odd balls". Even IF, they still need parts, and most are shared with other models, so I don't get the logic.

My Dispatcher in 'before status', as I got it, did make Jeep of the Week #119, so you guys with some beauties should have sent yours in too to help the 'Dj showing' get some umph towards being included...

It's hard to believe $40-$48K, but I guess most of that is 'prestige' of owning the history of who owned it before.

That 'barn find' is amazing! Thanks for sharing.

Steve that would be the number of Surreys, not dispatchers/DJ3A overall production. Many less survive, I know of at least one that is a 4WD trail vehicle now, and I own one that is wrecked and only has a tub and fenders to actually call a Surrey. Keep your eyes open and you'll find Surreys in the weirdest spots and dressed up to be other things. WE had a guy asking about his project jeep on the 3A page, turned out it was a Surrey, not a DJ3A, and he ended up keeping it a trail jeep but did send me some grab handles and footman loops for mine, which was appreciated.

Sure would like to see your parts lists, so if you decide to list them here start a new thread, that way everyone will see it. I talked with someone in the know the other day who stated most if not all the DJ3A parts not used in the other models were off the shelf components from other vehicles. It will be interesting to pursue that farther.

Sorry FBil, it was mostly pics of original parts showing legible cast numbers and I don't know how to do pics here. I had hoped they could see actual parts and compare cast numbers of the others to verify. They don't seem to be interested to try that.

The parts I've used were mostly rubber parts, seals, etc, brake cylinders (actual 1"frt/3/4"Rears) different from manual specs, and electrical from 3B's, Vj gas filler grommet, light bezels, all guessed at using dates of production comparison and pics of different parts for similarities. No science or expertise.

I tried the Cj exhaust manifold pipe and it is too short. I inquired here before for anyone who might have access to both a Dj and a 134L 2WD-SW or Vj for exhaust pipe comparisons, but didn't get any hits. I'm going to have one made.

I'm going to need before long the 9X2 drums and shoes, but can't find any sources. I can have the shoes made on the original frames, but the drums might be a challenge. Can anybody help with that info? I'm tempted to investigate 85-90 Mustang 4-lug drums, but haven't followed up on it yet.

Since I'm not 'restoring to original', I have more leway for parts that may not be authentic. For example, my new rims will fit 4X4.25/4.5 patterns, so I have more potential drums to look for than just the 4.5 pattern.

I agree that Willys was too practical to have ventured too far from what was readily available in many models/brands even. It's the verification that is difficult with computerized (GIGO) part inventories where specs are minimal to use for comparison. Hey, if it was easy, more would be doing it.

Let me know if there is something specific that you, or anyone else, might be looking for, and I'll see if I have the info. Happy Hunting!

It did not make it to the show according to my sources. Whether it sold or not, is unknown at the moment.
