Does anybody know what those two brackets, at the top of the grill shell, before the radiator, at odd angles, are for? I've yet to see any pics of them in use. Just curious. |

Old retired fart living in Ione, WA. I have a 1964 CJ3B. Recently overhauled original motor, transmission and overdrive. 11" Bronco drum brakes on all 4. Needs a new coat of paint but that will have to wait till next summer, it's next summer and I'm working on that now UPS & FEDEX will continue to profit

I do, and I tried to copy and paste it here, but no luck. I don't know how to do pictures here. Let me see if I can better describe it...There are two pieces, one on each side of the grill shell top, before the radiator, extending vertically with flat tops. Two holes in each. One is perpendicular to the radiator, the left/passenger side one, and the other is at an agle. You can't miss them ...unless you have what is supposed to be there hiding them. Do you? |

Ok, I found a pic. If you go down to the "Barn Surrey Find" post, and scroll down, there is a picture with the passenger side bracket showing...and nothing attached to it... |

Steve, These jeeps are older than the ones I mostly look at (i.e. study). Aren't those brackets flush with the top of the Radiator Guard/Grill? If it had a strip of welting, would it be flush with the welting on the Radiator Guard/ Grill? I've seen images of CJ2A's with this and believe I've read that at some point they stopped putting the welting on. Here's an example with the welting: http://www.thecj2apage.com/forums/average-...+webbing#262232 |

Rus, Freddy's Jeep is a beauty and I don't think I have ever seen the 'welt extension' on the grill like that either. The two vertical pieces are what I'm curious about. On Freddy's, it looks like there are two black pads on them. Maybe that's what they are...padded hood supports. Thanks! Also, the included discussions on 'cooling' are great too. I've always heard that if you don't have a shroud, the fan needs to be within 1-1&1/2 inches from the radiator, and if with a shroud, 2/3 of the fan under the shroud and 1/3 not for best air flow. Air flow is what you want, not cavitation. I also have done the 1/8 inch hole in the thermostat for the same reason...flow vs cavitaion. There are many good people and good suggestions in these sites. Thanks to all! |

My 1960 Surrey has both of the brackets and had nothing on either of them, however, when I did put new welting on the top of the grille(the stuff on the Barn Find Surrey is correct), I added two pieces of the same welting to the top of those brackets. If it doesn't do anything else, it will provide a little extra support for the hood. |
