After three years effort a totally rusted CJ3a has emerged as a fully rebuilt road registered pink Surrey. In 1964 my American Aunt brought a Pink Surrey Tonka Jeep to Australia as a gift for my father. The Tonka inspired us to recreate, as best we could, the original DJ3a Surrey. As no DJs were ever sold in Australia we found one CJ to use as a base and a second as the donor Jeep. My father and I had restored several GPW war time Jeeps in the early 1970s. These army surplus machines were plentiful in Australia which meant very few CJ2 or CJ3 Jeeps were sold here. The lack of factory built Right Hand Drive Jeeps caused Land Rover and Toyota to corner the 4x4 market. We realise the DJ- 3A was two wheel drive - we seek forgiveness for not being exact. |

Got any more details what you did, or pictures? It sounds like a unique jeep! How did you make the striped upholstery? Did you find a source for striped vinyl or did you have to make your own, or did you sew stripes in? Did you use the 60/40 style front seat? Side steps? Rear mounted spare? Solid rear panel? Four wheel drive is just an added bonus! |
