I PICKED UP ONE OF THOSE FUEL FILTERS WITH THE GLASS BOWL AND PUT IT ON MY FUEL PUMP WITH THE GLASS BOWL FACING UP SO I COULD GET IT IN. DOES IT MAKE ANY DIFFERENCE IF THE BOWL IS FACING UP OR DOWN. THIS GOES ON MY 1953-3B JEEP. THANKS FOR YOUR RESPONSE. FRED. |

Fred, did you buy a fuel FILTER with a glass bowl, or did you buy a fuel PUMP with a glass bowl. If a pump, the bowl has to be on the top side. If indeed a filter, sorry, I can't help you as I've never seen a fuel filter that has a glass bowl on it. |

Part of the purpose of the bowl is for a place for dirt and water to settle out, then you can remove the bowl and dump it out. Can't do that with it down-side upwards. BW |

Sure you can if it's made to work that way. The water and crud still settles to the bottom the clean fuel is taken out above that through a screened center outlet in the center of the glass bowl. It basically looks like it should be turned the other way but on the 2 stage fuel/vacuum pump the glass bowl is upside down. I've seen old inline glass bowl filters that are just the opposite but on this old fuel pump that's the way it works. When you unscrew the hold down the gas in the bowl just dumps everywhere and the crud is dumped wherever the gas goes. |
Old retired fart living in Ione, WA. I have a 1964 CJ3B. Recently overhauled original motor, transmission and overdrive. 11" Bronco drum brakes on all 4. Needs a new coat of paint but that will have to wait till next summer, it's next summer and I'm working on that now UPS & FEDEX will continue to profit

Woe just wait a minute there ! The standard AC fuel pump has a glass dome. That glass dome is not in any way intended to trap particulate matter nor any sediment. The glass domes sole function is to allow visual observation of the gasoline flow. This aids with fuel system problem diagnosis. Period. The fuel pump screen (brass) only filters out relatively large particulate matter. Certain glass sediment bowl fuel filters were optionally installed onto the Carter YF. The Willys option is the "Skinner" brand of sediment bowl fuel filter. That said some Carter brand sediment bowl fuel filters from that era seem to be slightly superior. Glass sediment bowl fuel filters trap both water and sediment plus they usually have some type of micro filtration element. Here again the glass filter bowl is used as a visual aid to determine fuel flow to that point. Also one can see the water and or sediment accumulation in the bowl. The sediment filter bowls are never inverted to become domes. |

I fail to see how the water and crud can settle to the bottom, with fresh fuel being pumped into the dome from the bottom. BW

AFTER I READ ALL THE PRO AND CONS ON THE FILTER I DECIDED TO TAKE EVERYTHING APART AND BEND THE PIPES OUT OF THE WAY SO I COULD MAKE ROOM FOR THE GLASS BOWL TO FIT IN THAT SPACE. MY FUEL PUMP ALSO HAS A GLASS DOME ON IT. THE GLASS BOWL FUEL FILTER HAS STAMPED ON THE HOUSING A BIG A C. IT HAS A CARTRIDGE FOR THE FILTER. HOPE ALL THIS HELPS. THATS WAY I LOVE THIS SITE GOOD OLD HONEST ADVICE. THANK YOU FOR THE HELP. FRED |
