Hi fellows,

I have juts visited the new section devoted to the CJ3B employed by mercenaries at Congo and after checking one of the pic, I have remember a very interesting selection of articles published at now defuncted Belgian magazine "Vmi" (Véhicules Militaires International), where I discovered for the very first time these jeeps and their modifications.

Well, talking aboute one of those pics, the one in which we could read the French name "Hirondelle" at the jeep grill, I´m totaly sure this come from one of the most succesfuls operations of French army or "Armée" during the Indochine war, which was named so: "Opération Hirondelle". This military operation involved paratroop drops of both Vietnamese and French armies. Check for more info here:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operation_Hirondelle

I "support" this explanation as many of the mercenaires during those years were vets from French Foreign Legion, who have fought at Indochine and later Argelie.

By the way, if you´re interested in this war, I would suggest to look for a copy of one very "obscure" film (at least for me, until I discovered it!) called "Dark of the Sun" also named "Last Train From Katanga" with Rod Taylor and Jim Brown. There´also "The Wild Geese", filmed years after. Also, it seems there´re several documentaries devoted to the Congo war, but I couldn´t find any of them.

Cheers, and keep´em rolling! ºIIIIº

Thanks Roberto -- that Hirondelle reference had stymied me. I will add the info to the page.

Some Jeeps can be glimpsed in photos of the Operation Hirondelle raid at http://www.ecpad.fr/fin-de-loperation-hirondelle

This one seems to be a M606 from mercenary force, arrived there via MDAP:
