I'm sure this has been discussed here before but maybe I missed it. So here's my question. Knowing that ethanol (corn syrup) gunks up carburators and also knowing that a low compression engine (the Hurricane) works better with lower octane gas, and that higher octane gas has less ethanol (so I've heard).....which do you use in your Hurricane engine? I'm at a loss here. |

since last year iv'e put 87 octane in my hurricane, and i have logged 5000 miles since and have had no problems. but then again my jeep tends to use the gas before it can go bad, i usually cycle a whole tank in 2 weeks. i religiously get my gas at Bp, it may be a silly reason but i have always believed to get my gas where the firetrucks, and law enforcement go. and in my area they all seem to go there. |

I always run 87 octane in my daily driver because its the cheapest fuel with I can get. I have to buy the 10% ethanol adulterated fuel mix in my area. I have never tried the cheaper 15% ethanol blends and I never plan to do so. Higher octane will not produce any more HP unless your compression ratio (C.R.) is above 8.5 to 1 ratio. 8.3 to 1 C.R. is merely an approximate estimate where the Hurricane may begin to pre-ignite on 87 octane. I'm not aware of any modified Willys 134 C.R.'s ever used that were higher than 8.2 to 1. |
