gents; good morning. it seems like all 4 of my willys are runniung like crap. all are kept in my barn in eastern NC and we spend a few summer months here on the farm every year. every year i dump some new gas in with the old 3-4-5 year old gas and it has caught up with me. so what is the best way to get the old gas out of the tanks? (i don't like the taste of old gas, sorry) is there a small electric pump type thing i can buy at home depot? now that the local gas houses are selling non ethanol and i will now use it, what is the best additive to use for non ethanol gas if the jeeps are sitting for 10 months a year? or should i just drain the gas out every year before leaving? anything else i need to do besides getting the old gas out of the tanks and put new non ethanol treated gas back in the tanks? bob in Beaufort, nc 54,61,61,64 3b 68 - M715 |

Just take a 12 volt fuel pump and attach a hose to each end. wire it with a cheap piece of extension cord and alligator clips. Instant transfer pump. |

StaBil http://www.goldeagle.com/brands/stabil/ Keeps it good for at least a year. I usually also put some "FI" cleaner in the tank before firing up again. Make sure you run it long enough when storing to get the StaBil all the way throughout the system. |

For only a few bucks you can get a syphon hose at Harbor Freight Tools. It has a squeeze ball to start the syphon so that you don't have to do it the other way. I'm not a big fan of using electric pumps on fuel outside of specifically designed fuel pumps. I use that syphon to transfer diesel from a 5 gallon can to my tractor. The problem then is what to do with the extracted fuel... Well, if it will burn at all you could pour some fresh in the jeep and then some of the slag you pulled out of the tank. That oughta work... And while doing that, why not some Lucas Fuel Conditioner. I've found that works well to get the engine running again. The Lucas also acts as a stabilizer. |

Bob in NC, I have my original steel tank in my collection of old parts bin and it has a drain plug on the bottom next to the fuel pick-up tube. I would think that most of the original steel tanks had the drain plug on the bottom. So that would be my way of draining old fuel from the tank. Running some cleaner of some kind in the tank before draining would not hurt either. A thread sealer on the plug before putting it back in would be a good idea. How about replacing the rubber fuel hose from the tank to the fuel pump? Can you buy non-ethanol gas in NC? Only on some Indian reservations can non-ethanol gas be found in Washington State. Good luck. Dick W. Spokane Wa. |

I used my drain plug on the tank (adjacent to the fuel line) as Dick described. I used a lot of STP gas treatment back in the day when I'd get water in the gas. I could hear and feel the difference once it got sucked into the carb. Nowadays, I used Stabil for lawnmower/weed eater gas since it can sit for a month or more. |

I was wondering if the gas at Marine stations(boat) has ethanol in it? The only thing I know about marine gas is that it doesn't have road tax on it. I'd expect that aviation fuel doesn't have ethanol either but it would be to expensive . I could fill the boat and siphon about 4 tanks out of it for the Jeep :). Now that I have a poly reproduction tank I guess I don't have to worry about rust anymore, the poly tank doesn't have a drain plug. |

Howard, glad to hear you have received your plastic fuel tank. Might I suggest you tip it upside down and shake it or otherwise try to remove any plastic shavings and such before you install it and plumb it. Also like I mentioned before I would remove the pick-up tube and make it a little shorter or cut the bottom of the tube at a 45 deg. angle so that if there ever gets debris in there it won't plug up. And you are right there is no drain plug on these tanks and no baffle either. I did get a check valve gas cap from MTS to help keep from spilling out the fill neck when the jeep is in an off camber condition, it works kinda. About marine gas you need to check on that subject. I have two brothers that live at Fawn lake just outside of Shelton and they tell me they buy non-ethanol gas from a station just down the road from the two feathers Indian Casino. I will try to find out the name of the station from them and let you know. You could go by there on your way home to Ocean Shores from Olympia and fill up GI cans. Dick W. Spokane Wa. |

Dick, I haven't installed the tank yet since I'm still in the process of painting. Haven't got to the inside yet. Thanks for the tips on the pickup tube and the plastic shavings. Fawn lake, I'll have to check out where that's at, we go to Shelton once a month. I know where the Little Creek Casino is but have never been by the Two Feathers. It must be North of Shelton. |

Howard, it may be Little Creek Casino, I don't get over there too often so the names of some things don't stick with me. I will check though and get you the name of the gas station that sells non-ethanol gas and the name of the Casino too. Dick W. Spokane Wa. |

Ok Dick, thanks. There are a number of small tribes in that area that have casino's. |

Howard, it is the "Little Creek Casino" and the gas at the Casino is Shell gas. It is not the non-ethanol fuel I was talking about. My brother says that the station down the road on the east side of US highway 101 is the one that sells non-ethanol gas. It is part of the Little Creek Casino, but not on the same property. How they do this is a mystery. Both of my brothers live at Fawn lake and they buy gas there all of the time. I don't know how they are getting away with this, we have Indian Casinos in Spokane too, but as far as I know none of them sell non-ethanol gas? Dick W. Spokane Wa. |
