My wife had last Friday off from working both days of the prior weekend so we did a 3 day trip to North Meadow Creek again, probably our most favorite place. It was the 3B's first real outing since a major backshopping and it did provide at least one apprehensive moment when it didn't want to start after sitting 3 days. Had to do a little keystroke work and reset the cold starting on the FI, but success. Weather wasn't exactly nice and the rain gear did get a workout, along with every piece of clothing we brought along. When we got to Upper Twin Lake and the end of the Jeep trail, we ran into 3 snot nosed high school boys that had packed in from the Jeep trailhead (about 4 miles back). They were doing what I assume was a rerun of Pat McManus's version of the "Big Trip" (from the book “A Fine and Pleasant Misery”) by hiking from N. Meadow over the divide into what I assume was South Fork Mill Creek where we were a few weeks back where their parents were probably going to pick them up later. Unfortunately, they were headed to the same pristine (or maybe formerly pristine) un-named lake we were for the night (another 1.5 miles of backpacking). Other than those three, we didn't see anyone else. Lower Bradley Meadow/Lady of the Lake Peak-just starting to get some fall color ![]() ![]() It started raining just as I got to the lake and I threw the rain fly over the tent before I put the poles in, but didn't get it too wet. 70's pushing old guy beat the 3 snot nosed kids to the lake R) ![]() Token goat shot too far away, but one did trip over one of the tent guys in the middle of the night. ![]() Just scenery ![]() |

There are 6 lakes in the N. Meadow drainage and all have decent fishing. On the north fork we were on, Lower Twin Lake has brookies, an abundace of brookies, and none of them get very big with 12" being a big fish. Upper Twin has cut throats and maybe some cut/rainbow hybirds. The little lake we were at has west slope cuts only and some of those are nice 1 to 2 lbs. There appears to be some reproduction in the small lake and a lot in both Twin's. The creek proper has all as would be expected, but is dominated by the brookies (for the most part condidered an invasive species around here and thankfully not present in any of the south fork lakes). I have been wandering around the high country in Montana for better than 55 years, including close to a years time on the Beartooth Plateau (about as high and wild as anywhere in the US outside Alaska) and have yet to come across one of the big headed trout. Not saying they don't exist, but I haven't observed any. |
