I suggest that the rear inner axle shaft seal (next to wheel bearing) is in marginal or poor condition. Jeep # 640959 = inner gear lubricant seal for D-41 and tapered shaft D-44. It may be O.K. to drive for a while if it did not get lube on the brake shoes. If it has lube on the shoes then the outer seal has also gone bad. Jeep #914802 = outer grease seal for D-41 and tapered shaft D-44. When the inner seal only goes bad the differential gear lube can exit the tube just inside the rear tire. That will sling some gear lube onto the inner tire sidewall. |

I've had a "new to me" experience lately with neoprene type rear inner seals. The axle shafts cannot be removed and re-installed even with very low miles on the neoprene seals. I'm currently trying to locate some original leather type inner seals. They are more forgiving of axle shaft removal and re-install. |

Oldtime, do you happen to know the bearing numbers and/or measurements for those inner seals? |

Bob, Most every bearing number is given here: http://www.film.queensu.ca/CJ3B/Tech/Bearings.html I'll try and remember to measure the original inner tapered D44 seals. |

well pulled the axle, it is bent in the splines both seals are no good.bearing retainer has a new groove in it,but i can just turn it over.brake shoes are all right.i guess i had it bound up somehow on that side hill. |

dos equis, Please fill in your signature with known statistics about your Jeep. I think you have a 1954 ? Is that correct ? You're currently running a Dauntless 225 ? If you have a pre 1957 then it is originally equipped with 10 spline rear axle shafts. With V-6 power you should upgrade to 19 spline or larger axle shafts. Depending on drivetrain you may possibly need a 19 spline full floater or a tapered flanged axle with 30 spline shafts. I suggest that a stock standard CJ with a 134 engine will be hard pressed to break a 10 spline axle shaft. A V-6 will be hard pressed to break a 19 spline axle shaft unless the jeep is geared way low and has wide tires over 33". I recommend 30 spline axle shafts for large V-8 power train or with tires over 33" having ultra low gears. See: http://z4.invisionfree.com/CJ3B_Bulletin_B...277&st=15&#last |
