Whew, thanks Bill. Now I don't feel so bad about snatching up the last one. And that one comes with bell housing attached!!!

AND....now I know what a hypoid gear is.

Be aware. Truck freight for mine was almost as much as the transmission itself. He did throw in the flywheel at no extra charge so that helped ease the pain. I never even thought about asking for the bell housing so hope mine will do.

HAPPY THANKSGIVING EVERYBODY.

Thanks Bill for the heads up. The OD is a done deal now. Just shipping arrangements needed now from South Pa to South Florida, and TBD. I'll have to retrofit the clutch linkage pivot, and shorter driveshaft length when installed, as well as the electrical, but the OD should sure help the cruising.

The original Jeepster bellhousing seems to have a different bolt pattern from my Dispatcher's. More on the top, and less on the bottom. Anybody in need of that particular bellhousing? It has the right hand clutch arm hole as well, like shown in one of PapaC's pix, I guess for right-hand drive usage????. Mine does not.

I can make more specific comparisons once I have it in hand, sometime TBD via transportation arrangements.

This Cj3B/Dj site is invaluable for info exchange and opportunities, and is really appreciated. Thanks to all involved!

Try this:

20168/Tire Diameter inches=(Rev/mile)

#drive teeth X axle ratio X (Rev/mile)/1001=#driven teeth

per site below...

http://www.partshp.com/speedometer_gears.htm

...which 'may not' have the specific teeth you're looking for. but does have some adapters shown for 'correction' capabilities, and other parts too.

I'm using one of their adapters in my van (6 years now) after changing the rear end ratio and tire size from original, and it is now spot on in radar.

Thanks Steve, I'm bookmarking the site for further study. Sometimes I think my lack of knowledge on these subject is apalling and I want you to know your help is definitely appreciated. I finally figured out why the transmission and overdrive doesn't like the hypoid type gear oil which has been certainly confusing to me until now. My latest research indicates that it's not so much because of the steel gears themselves but because of the brass sycronizers which doesn't react well with the additives in the oil, thus indicating the need for either 80 or 90 wt non hypoid type gear oil.

I've been able to find diagrams on the transmission itself but so far nothing on part numbers on the speedometer gears themselves. Before calling around looking for them I'm going to 'try' to find out exactly what it is I'm looking for.

I'm glad someone is going thru the OD system here.. In a few months I may be working on my Surrey project which also has an overdrive in it. I am clueless about this system, so make sure you study up so you can answer my questions when the time comes. :D
59 convertible 15933 needs drivetrain
60 convertible 17052 has a V6 and 4WD

Back to gear oil.

Napa GL1 recommended for three speed and overdrive transmissions.

Part Number: NHF 65201
Napa GL1,Attributes:
Container Size : 1 GAL
Gear Oil Application : GL-1 Manual Rear End
Gear Oil Style Name : GL-1 90 Gear Oil
Gear Oil Weight Rating : 80w90
Manufacturer : Martin Lubricants
Synthetic : No

Another option

Other options are Pennzoil "Synchromesh Manual Transmission Fluid", made for transmissions with brass parts, or just plain 40 weight non-detergent motor oil.

Farm supply houses should also be of some help.

Do NOT use Napa GL5 Extreame Pressure Differential Lube or anything else that has synthetics in it that will destroy the brass sycronizers.

I'm not sure that this is a pure fact but it sounds right

"The difference between engine oils rated at 40 weight versus gear oils rated at 90 weight is mostly in the test temperature. Engine oils get viscosity tested at 212 °F while gear oils are tested near 70 °F. So, 40 weight engine oil has a viscosity of about 90 weight at 70 °F, thins out to 40 weight when hot."

I think I'm going with the gl1 when the time comes
