Drum hubs

Well folks, The Mustang drums are now back re-grooved to clear the backing plates. Took two weeks and $128 for the four!!!!! Plus, he wouldn't touch my rear hubs that I could not get the drum separated from...neither would any of 9 other so-called machine shops. Nobody likes to 'think outside the box' any more...just robots.

Any way, yesterday I finally got one of the drums released. It took a half can of PB Blaster, and a lot of Yellow bottle LP... and ... a lot of BFH approach as described earlier by PapaC. It bent the drum center in at the lugs before they let go, but the hub is fine. Fine I say, except the PO has apparently replaced one of the lugs, and it isn't straight, therefore causing a very slight wobble, front to rear wise. I guess that helps explain the elliptical wear pattern.

I'm glad I checked it before putting it to use with a new drum to just ruin it. I guess that is the weakness of not having the actual center hole matched up to center the drum. One shop did offer to make a 'spacer' piece to fill the hole. I did not ask how much that would cost. Maybe I should have.

I haven't tried the fronts yet to find any more 'surprises'. Hopefully there will be none. I just want to get the rear hubs back on so I can roll the project again.

Hey guys, I used a 4 lug, 6-cylinder engine Ford falcon drum with the 9 1/2" surface area. They'll work! The fronts have more surface area than the rears. You can find them on ebay. Just check out ford falcon, 1960 up 170 cu. in. motor applications.

Thanks for posting this valuable additional information!!!

One quick question if you don't mind. Is the bolt pattern for the falcon drums the same as for the original dj wheels with 4 and a half inch spacing between the lugs and do the original wheels fit them???

(Just thinking out loud)

Once again Welcome and thanks for posting!!!

Charles, Thanks for posting the pics of my machined drums. The Falcon mentioned above has two drums, NAPA part#4401068 at 9X1-1/2 shoes MAX, but I wanted to keep the 9X2 shoes as a minimum. I used the other drums same as Falcon, (65-66 Mustangs too) NAPA #4401067 as you can see where I marked it for the rear drums. Both of these two part numbers have the 61.8mm center hole, so no advantage there.

For the fronts, I'm using NAPA#4401046 with 9X2-1/4 wide shoes originally on a Mustang (Falcon, Comet, Maverick, Ranchero, etc-ALL the same 67-73 6cyl models with 4-lugs) and later I may consider swapping the backing plate out for the Mustang brakes, to fit the wider front brake shoes. That's later tho. For now I'll use the Dj 9X2 shoes up front with the modified drums.

I wish someone would have mentioned the Falcon/Mustang fit 5 months ago and saved me tons of computer time and trials and errors, but now we have even more demonstration of fitments to work with, so all is good. Hope it all helps the next guy out there needing 4-lug Dj drums.

BTW, IFFFFFF you can find them, the 71-73 PINTO seems to have been the exact same drum as Dj, but I waited four months for a custom-ordered set from Bendix at $90 !!!! each, but gave up waiting on them with no effort on their part to get them to me. The same for the Scout '80 2WD drums that also seem to be extinct from stock. A guy on Ebay wanted $249 for ONE!!! I paid $26 each for the Mustang drums!!!!!! but don't forget... plus the $128 for machining four for clearance of the back plates...approx $235 total for the four. Not too bad comparably.

Happy Hunting!!!!

Yeah, I'v learned quite a things a few minutes too late too, haven't we all?:D. I can GUARANTEE that I have logged hundreds of hours of research and still don't have mine put back together so I expect there's still a lot more to come!!

I do think its great that all of the new information that we're discovering is getting logged and documented here!! :)
