I can't seem to find the pics of the wrong data plate you mentioned,if you have any way to post that and a real one I'd appreciate seeing just what youa re talking about with the stampings. Getting the correct font for the numbers will be quite a trick too. There are machine shops that can do custom stamps, but it isn't cheap......None of the typical sets you can buy from your hardware store or online seem anywhere near right. Don't worry too much about the Halls, I am heading north to Iowa soon and can't play jeep mechanic for quite a while if work keeps up. At least we will be going back and forth to TX so if I do freeze solid I will have chance to thaw out between runs. I'm not looking forward to it, need to find a different source of reliable income so I can stick near home more. I've got to go find some gold ore or rare jewels laying on the ground or something.

Back when I first got mine, Colin said he believed the passenger seat might be like that of a delivery, as he noted the different seat back heights. I remember you noting something about you finding a frame modification/repair on the driver's seat also, and maybe that changed the seat back heights differently???? Remember, this is from a Dispatcher (utility), not a Surrey or Convertible (passenger). I think you're ideally looking for the 60/40 combination that almost fills the front area side by side. All I know is, I have the original Bill Of Sale from the dealer listing the passenger seat, Fram oil filter, and Half Top, as purchased options, and a hand written note about the trailer hitch install. The PO had them recovered, and might have padded the P-Seat Back more too, as it looked thicker. I remember as a kid, my seat was over the space between the two seats, so it has always been that seat frame and gap. BTW, the passenger seat does fold the back over the seat, and the whole assembly flips forward. I have pictures of it, and the driver's seat back folded forward too, but no flip (steering wheel in the way), and it was bolted down. Sorry if you are not happy with it all now. I'm so glad I'm not trying to build an 'icon', as I've got my hands full, and budget empty already, just trying to build a 'driver'. Good Luck to you! |

Dj3A DiISPATCHER DATA TAGS Ok. Here's a picture of the data plate or tag on Mr Browns 63 Surrey that he's got for sale. Notice the serial number is stamped from the back ![]() Heres a picture of a the typed data plate I mentioned earlier. At FabSteel where I worked back in the late 70's we had a typewriter type machine that would have been capable of typing one out fast. ![]() It's from this thread, http://z4.invisionfree.com/CJ3B_Bulletin_B...?showtopic=3963 Here's a early dj tag ![]() EARLY MODEL DJ3A DISPATCHERS have the serial number stamped from the front as shown! |

Most people that buy Serial tags to 'restamp' or 'restore' an early Jeep fail to realize there were over 50 different original designs, and only 4 or 5 are actually available today. If I knew what year/model you were restoring I 'might' be able to tell you which plate it should have. Like Fbill said, dataplates seem to migrate based on need sometimes. |

Joe, Charles is restoring a 56 DJ3A convertible.. Now I remember that generic dataplate...So there is a machine that does that, eh? The rear stamped one must use a huge heavy duty dymo labelmaker type of thing... I've seen NOS data plates on ebay, always wondered why a Willys dealer would have those in stock. |

It's hard to remember exactly but I'm thinking the one we had might or must have looked 'something' like this ![]() A ebay search for 'dog tag' machines or maybe metal stamp machine points in the right direction. The one pictured actually types 'raised from the back' rear stamp lettering. |

Anther question. I went back and read the threads about the serial number stampings on the dj tags that explained that the early ones were stamped in and the later ones were stamped out so I kind of got an understanding about that. My question is 'background color' Some, such as this one is mill or natural color ![]() Others such as this one have a black background ![]() Which is 'correct' for an early dj??? I'm 'thinking' mill color but I don't know for sure. Be aware that if it 'is' black I'm going to be asking more questions about what 'type' of black. ie would that black be paint or some kind of black dye? |

Off the top of my head the black looks wrong to me. I have no proof of that at the moment. |

The Serial Plate for the 56DJ3A is 907844, the same as CJ3B's and CJ 5's that year and stamped from the front. I'll try for more info. ps. That black plate with raised letter was painted by the owner... |

As you can see I'm pretty much on the top of my own hill This I walked to the edge of my back yard . That hills actually pretty steep. If you don't believe it try riding down it in a dj with hardly nothing for a seat, loaded down with a couple of grandkids holding on for dear life, (me too) and no brakes at all!!! ![]() They did have the watershed lake drained at the time so they could do some repairs on the spillway. Lucky it was drained because I was WAY out in there before the mud slowed me down. I (we) 'thought' we were gonna be stuck but I got on the gas, spun her around, and that little ol dj even with the wrong higher speed pinto axle and them slick 14 inch wheels.... Well, I managed to spin it around and it crawled right back up that hill. I would NEVER have believed it but that didn't stop me from doing it!! 100% sure that's the exact minute I fell in love with my DJ and started trying to determine what it really was and what could have happened to its 4 wheel drive !!! (Which because it's so light I didn't need by the way to get out of that mud!!!!)

It got warm enough to go out this evening in a short sleeve shirt! Water sanded my frame some in anticipation of 'another' coat of paint And started cleaning up the firewall and the bottom of the old tub so I could get it ready for surgery where needed ![]() I still don't see any holes that would have been pre drilled to mount a oil filled air breather (still looking for a dry type )![]() Also wishing I'd of had the extra money for hat channel. Mine was toast on the passenger side. ![]() Thats the 'first' section about 2/3 made (hammer and vise, and anvil only tools used) Wish I had a brake and that it wasn't so rusty on one side but beggars can't be choosers. I'm sure it'll look better (I hope) by the time I'm through with them. It woulda been lots easier to have bought new hat channel than to make all of them tight bends

PapaC, instead of roofing, maybe you need to start a new career by getting that producer to make a spin-off program..."Life with PapaC and his Willys". Talk about interesting documentation...and re$ource$ too... |
