I purchased a running 1961 dj3a and am wanting to identify if it is a Gala, Surrey or a Dispatcher convertible. What are the identifying factors for these jeeps? Here are some pictures of my running, driving and stopping jeep. The frame 23408 and body 20363 serial numbers do not match, any information on this would be helpful.![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

The quick answer is if it's one of the other versions of the dispatcher it will have a tailgate. If it's a convertible it will have a solid back panel instead of a tailgate. It will also have a short windshield like on the CJ3B's except instead of a canvas retaining channel across the top it will have a series of holes across the top for turn fasteners. The turn fasteners, also called CS or 'Common Sense' fasteners are so that the canvas top can be pulled over the top of the windshield and either fastened or released so that the top will fold back. Another way to be sure is it's the only model of the DJ line with NO pockets anywhere for the top bows. More information here. http://z4.invisionfree.com/CJ3B_Bulletin_B...topic=5356&st=0 Its a lot to sort through but that's what it took for us to figure it all out. If it's a surrey or gala 'they're pretty much the same thing' (quick answer) it will have a solid back panel and a tall windshield (like the dispatchers with the canvas retaining channel. 'Most' Galas went over seas to the resorts and the Surrey was the states version. A couple of more things to help be sure would be holes in the front fenders for straps to help stabilize the top, chrome bumpers, and a set of holes in each side if the windshield for the grab handles. http://www.jeepsurreygala.com The best site to find pictures of DJ's 'but they're not all identified as to what version they actually are) is http://www.ewillys.com/category/dj3a/. There's a lot more identifiers for each but this should help get you started with just a quick glance. Congragulations on your purchase, in my opinion way too many of these unique two wheel drive jeeps are slowly disappearing as they get turned into four wheel drives or scrapped |
