Hi Gang- I recently purchased a vintage 1950s Vic Hickey cast aluminum cylinder head for the L-134 engine. This head has roughly a 7.8 to 1 compresion ratio as opposed to the 6.4 or so of the stock head. The head is in excellent condition and I am in the process of sprucing it up for looks. It has now gotten me into thinking I would like to put a dual carb setup on our 1960 Surrey. I have been exploring what is or was available for these engines and found the Burns dual carb setup, which is extremely rare(read $$$$) and the Darland intake, also rare and Mr. Darland is now deceased, so there may not be any of those out there still. If any of you guys know of one of these setups that I might be able to buy, I sure would like to know about it. The next option is to modify the existing intake. There is an old school solution where you take the existing intake loose from the exhaust manifold, turn it upside down. Machine out the tube that the fuel vapor runs through, and plug the original carb throat opening with a freeze plug. You can then make an adaptor for the rectangular opening that could hold a two barrel carb or with extra work, a mounting for dual carbs. I have an extra manifold and before I did anything other than clean it up, I checked it against the exhaust/intake manifold gasket and by turning the manifold upside down, the bolt hodes don't match the gasket and you would have to machine off a bit of the ears that butt up against the exhaust manifold. This appears to be a weak spot in both securing the manifold tightly and would weaken the point where the exhaust manifold gasket surrounds the exhaust opening in the block. So I'm not sure this is a workable solution right now. Has anyone had any experience in making up a dual carb manifold using stainless tubing or even exhaust tubing? I would like to try something and would have to use later model carbs as they are lower profile and would clear the low hood on the DJ. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Thanks! |
