Charles, glad you made it home even in damaged condition of your bride, but once you get recuperated, I know we will hear from you with your findings of all of the good and bad parts of this DJ3A. |

SteveK Glenn, Bruce and I have calculated there were about 14,683 DJ3As built from late 1955 as 1956 models through end of production in or around December, 1964. This number could actually be somewhat higher due to the lack of good documentation by K-W. This includes some that we know of in India, but we don't know how many Willys(Kaiser) shipped over there or in what configuration, 2 or 4WD. Most of the photos I have seen of them, they were right hand drive. As far as Postal Jeeps, we have no idea how many DJ3As were actually used to deliver mail or how they were configured. Most of the DJs that we associate with Postal Jeeps were the DJ5 series that began in January 1965. We just wish Willys/Kaiser had kept closer records of the various body styles, left and right hand drive, 2 and 4WD models they actually did. Somewhere in the incinerated remains is the answer. Now here is some good news! Listen up guys. When I did the count a little over a year ago, we had 119 DJ3As in our database. As of today, we have 139! We have picked up 20 DJ3As in the past year. I haven't done the breakdown on the Surreys but they number around 55 or so. There is a Surrey northeast of Tulsa OK that I have been trying to contact the owner, with no success, but will keep trying. This increase is due to the renewed effort of several of us and all I can say is, Keep on truckin" We know there were 100 Pepsi Surreys ordered by Pepsi and purchased by the Pepsi distributors around the country. We know of 6 that we can identify as true Pepsi Surreys. I would guess that the primary difference in most of those Surreys was the upholstery in Yellow and White with the Pepsi logo. When that fabric gave up the ghost, those Surreys looked like your run of the mill Surrey. If any of you came up with some yellow and white fabric with your Surrey(usually Cerulean Blue Surreys) you may have something that is rare. Later............ Colin |

Charles, in reference to the "non-existent oil filter and by-pass", if you look at the DJ3A data sheets, Oil bath air cleaner, Fram oil filter, Passenger seat, Special Paint, and various tops are ALL listed as "options". Maybe you found a factory built 'non optioned filter' application...Why any one would do that I have no idea, but who knows? Were the top's side rail pieces there? Any idea how long it has been sitting? You must be excited. You are certainly dedicated to the cause... |

You can tell it 'used' to have a oil filter. Luckily the bracket is still there along with the special nut clips like that I was once asking about that is on my 56. Saving the doors and top bows until I have time to go into and document a few details. All the rod clips are there but no lower rods for the top. But there IS still something very special on them, maybe later tonight. |
