I saw these and thought you might like to see them. Moderator - If this is an improper post please delete.

The red one is titled with a vin of 56337. I am confident there is more to the VIN. I am going to see it soon. Can't get a good answer from the seller on the engine transplant. Any thoughts on the speedometer on it? Does that type provide a guess on year?

Hi, welcome, and thanks for posting.

The comments on this link

http://www.ewillys.com/2015/02/26/year-dj-3a-irving-tx-4500/

Pretty much echoes what I would think about the first DJ listing you posted about. The early 'Eight' speedometer 'probably' puts this former delivery DJ in the 1956 to 57 titled range. For 'me' the Mazda motor, wrong wheels and tires, etc would be a turnoff. The missing parts also have to be taken into consideration ....but to each his own.

The second listing you mention

http://www.ewillys.com/2015/03/07/1959-dj-...000/#more-55880

Appears to be an admittedly well done Surrey look alike or clone and is much the better looking jeep. It also comes with a much higher price. :)

Note: I don't know of any 'real' Surreys that have a floor shift instead of a column shift. Surreys were originally built and promoted as rental or party jeeps for resorts. Also standard on Surreys was a solid back panel instead of a tailgate. With a column shift there would be more room to get an extra person in there or freedom of movement. A floor shift would be getting in the way of you stuffing an extra kid in there somewhere or even for taking a long romantic drive with just you and your sweetie all cuddled up together and enjoying your vacation.

I did some reading on earlycj5.net after I asked the speedo question and see that 56-57 is probably correct. I also noticed that being a former hard top it does not have the larger cutouts for the door which might support the 56-57 estimate.

I have this feeling that the Mazda engine is from the Ford Ranger clone Mazda pickup. Don't know why - I could be wrong. The seller's wife just doesn't know. The body does look pretty solid.

Looks like no gas tank. I was reading here about fuel tanks and that they are hard to find. Are there alternatives for replacement rear tanks for a DJ3A?

Thanks,

Mark

This is a fun conversation but I honestly don't know the best answer to that question or even what others have done who find themselves in the same situation.

Right now the only solution I can bring to mind would be to either fabricate one or have one made.

Which is what I would probably find myself doing if I were in that situation. Good replacement dj3a gas tanks are almost impossible to find, as is a correct filler tube.

I'm a living example that missing or wrong parts can run the prices of these jeeps up astronomically.
