I was able to clean up my old one (1956 6v) to the point where I was getting resistance readings. EDIT: farther down this thread there is proof positive that the below fuel gauge sending unit is NOT CORRECT FOR A DJ3A ![]() ![]() I don't trust aftermarket and didn't know what the resistance readings should be to try to locate a nos which may? have had to be altered for a DJ. Others may know more about that. For mine to get working I had to take apart what I could, Give it a acid bath to remove rust and corrosion Heavily neutralize the acid Make sure all contact points were impeccably clean Light oiled and used dielectric grease to reassemble And am hoping it will hold up. My 62 Dj, 12V, came with a custom made new tank supposedly to specs (looks right) but never installed, and a new sending unit with six mounting holes. Some senders seem to have five, but don't know what is original. The new sending unit looks like what I've seen KW sells and is adjustable for depth of tank. I too am hoping it will work when the day finally arrives. A little calibration/adjustments after some use may be in order. Since my tank will be a bear to R&R when completed, I probably will just 'calibrate' ME to understand the 'gauge readings' to actual content, via trial and error and 'mileage used readings'. I set the float to bottom out leaving about a gallon below it for margin of error. I intend to initially fill the tank gallon by gallon noting the settled-in E-F range indicated on the gauge at each step. That is my plan of attack at it. Good Luck! Edit: P.S. I found a "Web Page Not Found" when I tried to use your link. |

Here's your pictures ![]() ![]() ![]() Yours is different or a later unit than mine. The wire connection is obviously the hot wire that goes to the points that move along the rheostat. The housing that rheostat is in needs a solid ground all the way from the housing that it is in to where it attaches to that top plate that holds it to the tank. If there is corrosion between the two where they attach or join then you won't get a reading at all on your tester. My problem was not the rheostat or points, my problem was that ground connection where the sending unit attaches to the top plate. I cleaned both of the pieces up where that joint is and then tinned both sides with solder to help keep further rust and corrosion from forming. Then before putting it back together I used dielectric grease to try to get a even better trouble free connection. Once I install mine (I haven't yet) I will run a dedicated ground to that top plate on the sending unit. These things are very very sensitive to each connection and joint. Good Luck Charles |

I have now learned a lot more about fuel gauge sending units (THANKS BRUCE) The sending unit that was in my 1956 DJ3A is NOT original to a DJ. I also learned that doesn't mean it wouldn't work, or any other sending unit wouldn't work especially using Steve's method, it just means that none of the units pictured in this thread until now are correct. The one that was in mine and previously pictured in this thread is actually out of a Willys station wagon or pickup and was replaced at some point by either a dealer or previous owner. Maybe better note the following eBay description and picture. __________________________________________________________________________ This is an original NOS King Seeley brand Fuel sending unit #800831 for Early Jeep Willys 2WD/4WD PICK UP . This is 6 screws mount. ![]() ______________________________________________________________ EVEN THOUGH THEY WILL FIT THOSE ARE NOT FACTORY CORRECT FOR A DJ3A DISPATCHER!!! Further proof is that Bruce himself (see jeepsurreygala.com). has removed and inspected quite a few of these over the years. One even from a 1956 with a serial number very close to mine, and they were all the same but not like mine..... or that eBay one either. In fact he indicated that all dispatchers sending units were the same. What a real DJ3A Dispatcher should have is a sending unit.. actually named "GAUGE, FUEL ASSEMBLY, (TANK UNIT) ....that looks like this ![]() ![]() Part number #909817 And similar to this from Kaiser Willys ![]() Which may be ok, but sorry Kaiser Willys, I don't do aftermarket parts if I can help it at all. One last thing, the reason the same unit will exchange on our DJ's from 6 to 12v is because of the extra little voltage regulator attached to the back of a early 6 volt KING SEELEY DJ instrument cluster. So now MY plan of attack is I'm going to STEAL the sending unit off of my 63 and if necessary try to get it to working and put it on my 56!!! I 'think' now I'v got all of this right and THANKS Bruce for the education!!! Charles |
