Thanks SteveK for the heads up this afternoon on this Surrey! Hagar, my cell # is 602-810-1495. I may have to take a trip to Riverside to see your Surrey, but it may be when it cools down a bit and Interstate 10 gets opened up for 4 land traffic again! I really enjoyed looking at the pics of your SURREY so thanks. Those air filter housings are hard to find. Just so you know it took me a 2 and a half year search to even find a complete one! They are that rare!!! Some early corvettes use the same filter but right now the year escapes me. Another option is to buy new copper mesh to replace the old copper inside the rings which oxidizes and disintegrates over the years. But then you'd have to remember to keep it oiled and clean similar to the way you would a k&n. There is a K&n part number that's close but it's a 1/4 inch too wide on the outside diameter so that would make it rest on the wrong lip and raise your breather up even more. I wouldn't recommend that route, especially if it's already touching the hood. Likely the simplest route if you're not worried about originality is to use Bruce's method and go to a parts store and start comparing sizes. My ring measurements are 1 1/2 high. The outside ring is 6 inches and the inside ring is 4 and 1/2 inches. The one I traded for someone had taken the guts (paper) out of a modern air filter and cut it to fit and stuffed it between the rings so I guess that's another option. I'll be replacing that with a original copper one but I understand that's not necessarily the wisest choice for air filter filtration. Charles |

I was expecting the correct air cleaner to be an oil bath type like you see on early flat fenders. But I didn't see any of the brackets/supports associated with that type. So I'm surprised to find out it's a factory offering. I had figured it to be something that a previous owner/mechanic had just slapped on there. Thanks all for the comments and help. Jim |

UPDATE Well, the heat has backed off a little bit around here so I am getting started on getting the Jeep running. I've bought a new battery, ignition coil, and coil wire and installed them. I've checked the oil and oil level, put some water into the radiator, and turned the engine over for the first time in about 10 years. The fuel pump bowl filled with fuel while cranking......old, but I added 5 gallons of fresh. The dash oil light didn't go off while cranking, but I'm confident oil was circulated thru the engine while cranking. Will fill the carb bowl up with some fresh gas thru the vent tube, prime the engine, and cross my fingers. Tomorrow morning it goes vroom for the first time in a while. Pictures to follow tomorrow.... |
