On opening up the gear box for servicing found that the speedometer gear is missing and the receptacle has been blocked with a rubber cup. Tried to search for the design in order to replicate one or find an alternative, but the parts list doesn't give a clear picture of the same and also the related parts that hold it in place engaged to the inner gear. I'm back here to find some help with the same.( not been able to post pictures on the forum). Thanks. Dinesh. |

Dinesh Correct speedo gear for your dj is the 644463, it's a 17 tooth driven gear, and 5 groove drive gear Might check with jeepsterman, he might have one, the jeepster, 473vj, 673vj w/ 4:56 rear end also used same 17 tooth gear Have pics of both if needing to see them. willys speedo gears |

Thanks a lot Charles and Dave for the guidance. The djs in India have kmph speedo rather than one in mph that reads from 0 to 14. Would the number of teeth on the gear vary for that? Another doubt is about how the gear would fit into the gear box maintaining its position, by a rubber bush or retainer or something in metal? I do have the speedo gear but the speedo driven gear is what is missing with its cover. thanks again. regards. dinesh |

Dinesh domestic model vehicles have had dual KPH and MPH speedos down thru the years. I would imagine that same 17 tooth gear was used regardless of KPH or MPH. from the following pic you can see the retaining ring and small bolt that is used to secure the ring in place. Ring holds speedo cable within trans if the bolt is removed you can pull speedo cable end out of trans. the driven gear inserts into the cable end over cable. the assembly is then inserted with driven gear back into trans and is held in place by retaining ring and small bolt. Dont have pic of cable end without driven gear, but can get it and post tomorrow. ![]() first two driven gears are original DJ 17 tooth gears, far right is a 18 tooth gear

Those are great pics indeed Bruce. Like a tutorial! I've a doubt, after it passes the equaliser the cable is secured to the chassis by a clip retainer and then goes directly into the rear wheel drum. Am I right Bruce? Could you please measure the 1. length of the front cable, and the rear one? 2.the rear one in total length and on either sides of the equaliser. 3.length of the two rods that attach to the equilizer and the pivot arm of the crossmember. This info would help me choose a make shift cable until I receive one from USA. Thanks. Dinesh |

yes, pic of retainer sent to you front cable from what I can tell is about 50-60 inches from firewall to pivot lever rear cable, measured two old original and one was 86 inches end to end the other was 90 inches. the J-bolt hooks to pivot lever and goes thru equalizer used to take up slack in cables. |
