So many dj3a’s are missing front bumpers this question bothered me 4 years ago in not how many different ones they made but what were the actual specs on the original ones that I could find. Especially since I was fabricating my own out of heavier steel. During the course of my searching I spent a tremendous amount of time pulling up what specs on front bumpers that I could find which were never clear that they were also correct for dj’s. I also pulled up any pictures I could find of any and all dj3a pictures that I could find and tried my best to compare specs and compare them to scale of the pictures that I found. Lots and lots of research at the time it was! Finally I finally determined where I thought I needed to drill my holes and make the slots in the for the tag. This was a tremendous amount of work not even compared to the research involved but I am very happy with the results. If I’m being truthful buying a ready made bumper would have been much easier, less time consuming, and cheaper in the long run. Nevertheless I qualify that I am extremely happy and satisfied with my results. I would not in any way trade mine for a bought one even though any one truly familiar with Willy’s jeeps would recognize it right off as non original because of the heavier steel. I also expect it would take someone with a exact original bumper and a tape measure to absolute check my calculated measurement on the unused holes to see if I got them 100% correct right down to the exact millimeter. I am 100% certain this couldn’t be determined wrong just by looking so I’m both confident and satisfied with my work. That said, it is my thoughts that all dj3a front bumpers were the same. Looking at pictures from Walck’s 4WD and the various bumpers they sell....unless someone has better information than me which is always possible and would be welcomed....I determine that if I was buying a replacement bumper I would be getting the 1955- 71 cj5, cj6 bumper advertised for sale for $89.99 as of this posting. In my opinion the holes appear correct and it has the front tag slots just as other dj3a’s that I have seen that appear to still have their original front bumpers. I hope this helps and good luck! Fred - I would never dispute Charles' research, I'm sure you can't go wrong following his advice. My 1959 DJ came with the rear chrome curved bumper with proper supports as can be found on the Surreys. I'm quite sure it is original, perhaps it was an option. I don't have a front bumper, but plan on going with a Surrey type there too. Alan |
