Ending development

Posted by nataku92 (Admin) at Nov 24 2012, 09:22 AM. 322 comments

Hi everyone,

While this probably won't be surprising to anyone, I just wanted to officially announce that I won't be working on CSPSP anymore. I no longer have the time, it isn't interesting anymore, and a few members of the community are downright ungrateful and seriously assholes.

I want to apologize everyone else; it definitely was pretty fun working on it in the beginning, and it was pretty cool just having you guys play my game. Sorry that I wasn't able to add as much as the stuff I would have liked (or fix the many bugs and problems).

If I can dig it up, I'll release the source code, in case anyone wants to tinker with it. Unfortunately, I won't have the time to walk people through every single line of code, so you'll have to figure it out on your own.

Thanks,
nataku92

Edit:
Here's the github for the client code. I will consider adding the server and appengine code later if people need it.

CSPSP Discussion topic

Posted by nataku92 (Admin) at Jun 11 2012, 05:51 PM. 132 comments

Hey everyone,

Sorry about basically disappearing; I really just don't have that much free time anymore (I know that you guys have already heard me say this, but that's honestly all that it is).

So just an update on my current situation. I'm at college right now, so schoolwork and shit has been really busy. Also, I'm away from home, so I actually don't have access to my old desktop with all the cspsp development stuff (and I actually don't have my psp either); this means that I really physically can't update anything right now. Also, I'll also be working during the summer, so I'm not sure if I'll have time then either unfortunately.

I haven't had the time to completely fix the whole app server issue, so I know things have been pretty shitty. I've heard about the gshi server by raing3, and I think it's pretty awesome. I wouldn't be opposed to working with him, although I he hasn't contacted me (and vice versa), and I think he's probably pretty busy too.

I'm not actually sure how many people still play cspsp; I know that a lot of the old players left a while ago, so I've actually been completely out of the loop. Of course I would love if I had the time to fix everything, but I guess realistically I'm not completely sure if it's worth it (how many people still play?).

Forums: All of the old moderators have left, so I think it might be appropriate to appoint new mods. I'm currently thinking of Muhu; I didn't realize he was still semi-active on the forums (@muhu, let me know if you want to be a mod; there's no obligation of course).

Source Code: Before, I was sort of opposed to releasing the source code due to security issues and such, but I think I might be approaching this the wrong way (a community enforced banning system might work a lot better). Anyways, I still think it's ridiculously poorly written and unmaintainable code, but I'm definitely more willing to release it now. If I decide that I really don't have time, I'll make sure to release it so others can hopefully learn from it.

Another Idea: So I've been thinking of maybe starting another game (similar to cspsp) for the PC instead of PSP. While it's sort of cool playing on the psp, development was a -huge- pain; working on the PC would be a lot quicker (and I feel like I've learned how to write much cleaner code since starting cspsp). Would you guys be interested if I worked on that instead of cspsp?

Let me know your thoughts!

CSPSP downtime

Posted by nataku92 (Admin) at Nov 7 2011, 09:31 PM. 107 comments

Hey everyone,

Just wanted to give an explanation for the downtime (no, the website hasn't been hacked). Google lowered its free quotas for app engine (which cspsp is hosted on), and I am now currently over the daily limit. Hopefully I'll find some time to get it run properly again as soon as possible; sorry about the problems until then.

CSPSP v1.92 Update

OK hopefully this update fixes the name mixup bug. Also, I might have fixed the problem with being removed from servers during map downloading. If you still have these problems, please reply back! Server owners do not have to update their servers.

Code:

- v1.81 UPDATE-
- v1.82 UPDATE-

Few more bugfixes. Only clientside, so you server owners don't have to update your servers.
Code:

__________
-UPDATES-
__________

Actually fixed bug where the round end message would display at the wrong time
Fixed a bug where the score sheet would not show more than 10 players in ffa
Fixed a small bug where the displayed respawn timer would be incorrect

----------

This is just a small update that mainly address some of the gameplay issues of ctf and ffa. I've made the respawn time editable (default is now 5 seconds), and I've also added a configurable invincibility period after spawning (indicated by a bubble surrounding players) as well as configurable start weapons (default is the MP5). I also fixed the bug in tdm where the round would end before a team was actually dead. Finally, I added some error checking in the lobby code to try and help prevent those common crashes in the friends screen (unfortunately, I'm not sure if it actually helps; I haven't had much luck reproducing the crash consistently).

Code:

__________
-UPDATES-
__________

Fixed bug where the round would end while players are still alive
Fixed a bug where grenades were not dropped on death
Added more error checking when reading packets
Added some error checking in game lobby (should hopefully prevent some freezing)
Implemented temporary invincibility on respawn
Implemented default gun config on respawn

Code:

 _______________
-INSTALLATION-
_______________

The online portion of this version currently only works on custom firmwares (3.xx, etc). To install, copy the CSPSP folder either to your PSP/GAME folder (not PSP/GAME150), or your PSP/GAMEXXX folder, where XXX is your firmware version.

NOTE: CSPSP now accesses the flash of your psp. It only reads (doesn't write), so it should be fine, but here's a warning nonetheless.

- v1.8 UPDATE-

A late Merry Christmas and an early Happy New Years to everyone! As promised, here's my surprise for you guys: the newest version of CSPSP :D (bet you guys didn't see this coming). Anyways, I've finally added some new gameplay modes to multiplayer that will hopefully break up the monotony of only team deathmatch; specifically, I've implemented Capture the Flag and Free for All. In addition, thanks to Xiphirx's tip, I've added a fix that should hopefully get rid of that dread purple screen bug a lot of people have been getting.

Unfortunately, there's a small bug in the auto update feature that prevents the new flagrunner map from being auto-downloaded, but it should be pretty easy to get it from the servers online.

Code:

__________
-UPDATES-
__________

Added Capture the Flag and Free for All gameplay modes (multiplayer only)!
Included a new map 'flagrunnner'
Fixed the purple screen bug (hopefully)
Fixed a potential map downloading bug
Added score indicator icons

New forums (sort of), clan registration, and name changing

Posted by nataku92 (Admin) at Nov 6 2010, 05:29 PM. 23 comments

As you probably noticed, the CSPSP forums have been transferred from invisionfree to zetaboards. Zetaboards is essentially the successor of invisionfree (same hosting company), and I don't think there are any downsides to the conversion, besides looking slightly different. Pretty much all data has been preserved, including member profiles and topics, so hopefully there won't be any problems (even old urls will redirect properly). This is just a heads-up about the change; feel free to discuss it.

In addition, I've got a clan registration thread going in the clan subforum (= clan tags finally). So if you're a clan leader, make sure to check it out and register. Also, I've implemented a name changing system on the CSPSP website; now everyone is allowed to change their name once (so make sure you're absolutely sure before doing it). You can change your name in the edit profile section of the site.

CSPSP v1.72

- v1.72 UPDATE-

Yes, here's another update. I've heard about the complaints about the buy menu (though I'm not sure how you play the rest of the game without a working analog), so I've added an option to change the menus to use the directional pad instead of analog. In addition, the freezing bug on the server list should be gone now.

Code:

__________
-UPDATES-
__________

Added the ability to change the in-game team select and buy menus to use the directional pad instead of analog
Added limits against invalid characters in text (should fix the freezing on the server list)
Made the game recognize a map as different from the server's if it has no overview.png

- v1.71 UPDATE-

Well unfortunately the 1.7 release wasn't perfect, and there were a number of bugs. This is a small bugfix update that fixes a few of these issues. The auto update feature of 1.7 should work, although it might be a bit slow.

Code:

__________
-UPDATES-
__________

*DEAD* and (team) are now displayed correctly
Fixed some bugs with map downloading (should be faster now)
Fixed bug with incorrect player profile info
Fixed freezing bug when leaving connection screen
Removed unnecessary delay when downloading updates

- v1.7 UPDATE-

Whoooooo, after a year and a half, I'm finally ready to release the latest version of CSPSP: 1.7! Sorry it took so long, but life was pretty busy for the past year or so. So, the greatest change in this version is that I stepped a bit away from the whole cs theme; the core gameplay is pretty much still exactly the same, but I've redone the menus and a lot of the graphics. In addition, I've worked a lot on fixing the network code, hopefully the online experience should be smoother than before (as always, I haven't tested it thoroughly, so I'm not guaranteeing anything. Overall, I've tried to make the game more polished by fixing those small little annoyances.

In addition, I would also like to introduce the new cspsp website. While many of you have probably already seen it, I'm officially opening it to everyone to use. It's still under development, so there might still be a few kinks to work out, but hopefully it'll be useful.

Anyways, I've already typed up a more complete listing of the updates in the readme, so I'll just let you read it for yourself:

Code:

__________
-UPDATES-
__________

Redid graphical style and some layouts for menus
Redid most of the graphics for the HUD (health bar, radar, buyzone, etc.)
Redid a lot of the networking code (fixed some major bugs)
Implemented shadowed strings that are MUCH easier to read

Implemented a more convenient selection method for team select and buy menus
Updated the default guns.txt (knife and HE grenade damage increased)
Made nade still go off if you die while throwing it
  Implemented team chat
Moved reloading bar and changed throwing grenade bar
  Changed initial loading bar style
Implemented customizable player icons in multiplayer
Added player profile to player info screen
Added a lock to nearest player feature for freelook
Implemented view angle value for guns (sniper rifles have it on by default)
Made player names display over teammates (and everyone when in spectator)
Updated secondary animations (hands are together now)
  Implemented ability to disable ratios
Fixed bug where terrorists win when there are 0 people left (regardless of who dies)
Added "_ killed you" and "you killed _" message to the HUD
Implemented a change team option in the in-game pause menu
Fixed a freezing bug in the spectating code
Fixed a mistake in the credits

Unfortunately, the servers that I hosted the update files on moved, so the automatic update system won't work. You'll have to manually download and install this version of CSPSP.

Note: I fixed a small bug. If you downloaded the release before you saw this message, I'd recommend downloading it again (especially if you have issues connecting to servers).
