Um, no. It no longer matters what elemental type the attack is, other than deciding effectiveness. I'm saying that each attack comes with a variable which tells the game whether the attack is physical or special in nature, and the attack uses that stat to calculate damage.

'Least, this is how I understand it. It's how I would program it...

yeah, but wouldn't it make more sense if an attack like Firepunch did physical damage, then some additional damage for being all fire and specialishy?

Maybe. It would be harder to program that, I would think. And you gotta ask yourself two key questions:

Would it break the system?
Is it worth the time and energy to program?

Those are what I would think are the biggest killers for design ideas.

No, types (fire, water, etc.) of attacks still matter...in terms of super-effectiveness of not very effectiveness.

I'll say it again;

Stuff like Hyper Beam, Flamethrower, Water Gun, etc. are all projectiles and are special attacks.

Thinks like Iron Tail, Fire Punch, Mega Kick, etc. make contact with the opponent and are physical.

It really makes alot of sense, frankly.

You guys do realize that nothing says that pokemon's stats can't be adjusted to incorporate the new changes.

So, what's the most epic battle you've ever faced in a video game? I don't mean like, "I punched God in the FACE." I mean, it was long, and grueling, and you just BARELY came out on top. For instance, mine is Mario + Luigi: Partners in Time.

I had defeated the younger princess, using most of my Bros. Items in the process (figuring, what do I have to save 'em for?). Then SHE appeared. I didn't know how to hit her, so it began as a battle of attrition. I'd use an item and fail to hit her for any significant damage. She'd attack me, and I'd heal the dead Bros. Eventually I somehow recalled the battle with Cackletta's soul from last game, and promptly took the fight to the elder Princess. It got alot more complicated to dodge her attacks (even though I figured out the fire/electricity patterns on the spaceships immediately), but I fought on. I hadn't died once during the entire game, and I wasn't going to let it end here. Finally, after an hour, she toppled.

Then I had to fight Bowser using nothing but dodges and counter-attacks. That was fun.

Does it only count if we actually beat it?

I would've if I hadn't lost my freakin' save... so many hours lost... -_-

The last level of Gitaroo Hero was pretty epic, but considering I beat it on my first try, that might seem insincere.

The running battle with the Shagohad and the final battle with Big Boss in MGS3 was pretty epic. As was the final battle with Gruntilda in Banjo-Kazooie.

I think one of my longest battles was the fight against Abyssion in Tales of Symphonia. For those who do not know who he is, Abyssion is essentially the proverbial 'uber tough optional boss' they throw in rpgs. He has 120,000 hp (compared to the final boss' 60,000) with no weaknesses and a slew of deadly attacks. Something else to mention is ToS doesn't really have turned based attacks; it's more or less real time. It took me a good 20 to 30 minutes to finally wear him down and kill him.

Of course, there are some crazy players who can beat him without taking damage and only one character...
There used to be an image here telling you to vote, but then Photobucket, the image site made to allow you to do third party hosting, no longer allows third party hosting without throwing a shitload of money at them... and I can barely afford to eat. So no you get some text of me bitching about it, yaaay! Also, go vote.
Everyday I'm tumbl'n.

Hrmph. That's tricky. I mean, there are plenty of bosses I've beat by the skin of my teeth, but for some reason, none springs to mind.

No actual "Tough, barely beaten after a grueling battle" bosses I can really think of. Ruby Weapon in FF7 took a while because I was casting (and miming) eight bahumut-zeros. And that's the second longest summon if I remember correctly.

But some of the battles that are supposed to be hard and take forever? I beat abbysion easy. I beat ff8's tonberry guy a good twenty minutes faster than I had gone in expecting from guides. Both the "super-hard-final-bosses" in the Mario & Luigi I beat on the first try.

I do seem to remember running out of chips against MMBN3's final boss (or was it 2?) and having to throw down and just use the megabuster.

The boss that has always lingered with me, though, was Zeromus. For some reason, I could never beat him (on easytype) as a child. How easy he was (though he killed me once, my first game over in the game) in FF4A kinda dissapointed me.

Probably Gate in MMX7...
god what a fucking cheap wanker...

they're been some pretty gruelling CV fights too, but none are immediately coming to mind...
Mrs. Limburger : Crashing, and banging, all kinds of weird noises. Howling, moaning, frightful grunting, things falling out of closets, all over the place!

Peter : Sounds like my weekend.

Ultimecia in Final fantasy 8. It literally took me an hour and a half to beat her. And it took multiple tires too.

I agree. Gate is an ass.

And his stage was even harder because of that ONE area which prevented the Shadow armor from getting through unless you had two parts that were as equally hard to get.

I had problems with Zeromus. My battles would always come down to Kain getting missed while he was up in the air hitting him with the drain lance for pitiful damage before he took too many hits in a row. But I nuked him pretty easily in hardtype, guess it taught me to pay more attention or something. Also, yellow demon in Megaman Collection. Haven't actually won against anything past him, but I beat him once!
Hey, the comic seems to be updating kind of regularly. Maybe we should vote to spread the word.

Man, I remember playing FF4 on the PS. This would be about two and a half years ago. I tried him so...many...freaking times before winning.

Then I play FF4A a few months back and own him.
With every team I throw at him.

Oh! Man I just remembered! I went into Serenade in MMBN3 unprepared, and won. But only just.

That guy is an ass! "I respect my foe, and so always win".
Jerk reflects all your attacks back at you, unless they hit him a specific way.

Which, of course, means you really need to know about this and prepare the chip folder in advance to ensure you have enough of the right kind of attacks to kill him. I managed it but only barely

The Omega version wasn't nearly so hard, because I knew what was coming.

There's a few good ones out there...The Yellow Demon in Megaman I is a dirty, rotten bastard, and I guess brawling with Divayth Fyr and Vivec in Morrowind was fairly epic.

Nastiest one ever, for gruelingness though is probably a minor boss in Shadow of the Beast, a Psygnosis game for Genesis that no one I else know has ever heard of. The third boss was a dragon who poked his head out of the bottom of this well. You are a little pink lizardy guy (about the size of the dragon's mouth) whose moves are limited to jump (No direction changes in mid-air) and punch (which punch freezes you in place for a good half a second), and who takes exactly twelve hits before Game Over. There are maybe three or four places to recharge in the whole game, and there is no password or save mechanism. This boss spits fire, which you can only dodge by ducking under it. Also, a series of spikes come out of the floor, which can only be dodged by jumping over them. These attacks occasionally coincide for a hit you can't dodge without being prescient. You must cross the spikes, dodge the fire, step up to his face and punch him in his chin over one hundred times.

I've had this damn game nine years, and I still can't beat it. After attempting this boss literally hundreds of times, to date I have only ever beaten it twice. Screw you too, Psygnosis!
