Yeah, the plot sort of drops off right about the time the game goes into non-linear mode. Basically, they shoved the plot aside in order to give the player some options as to where to go. A decent trade at least, if you consider that section of the game as extra, then its really not so bad. They get back to the plot by the end of the game, at least.

Frankly, I'll admit it had potential. The bit where you play as everyone getting to Narshe was good. But a game that has a storyline completely halt after you get the airship back after the world's destruction simply isn't worth the praise it gets.

Plus with the characters, most of them got all of two scenes before they were shoved back into practically NPC territory (with the exception of Terra, Locke, Celes and to an extent Edgar and Sabin, but not by much). There's also the magic system. When you have a magic system that allows your entire team to learn Ultima before level 30 you know something's wrong.

Though I guess some of it stems from people that say FF6 is the Holy Grail of RPGs when looking down on FF7 when there's really not much special about it.

EDIT: Yeah, I hate Kefka, but not for the same reasons. He's really a poorly developed villain. He just appears to do something that feels like Square are telling you "KEFKA'S A BASTARD! I HATE HIM AND SO DO YOU!" rather than actually giving any establishment as to his motives.

The storyline doesn't "grind to a halt", it branches out into each character, and them overcoming their problems in life and becoming better people.

...and if you got ultima by level 30, I'd be impressed.

And if you hate FF6 for that reason, shouldn't you loath FF7? I'm not saying it's necessarily a bad game, but it's easily more over-hyped than 6. And by at least ten times as many people.

As for Kefka, I liked that he was just plain evil. There was no "Oh, but Sephiroth was lied to all his life, and everyone was mean to him wah wah, it's not his fault he's evil with Jenova, and he should go have make-up sex with Cloud."
...but if it counts for anything, apparently he was driven insane by the same process that gave Celes her powers.

See my above edit.

As far as Cyan goes, he's introduced and then everyone's killed. I didn't "know" his family so I'm not sure what is so tragic so to speak. Maybe if his family had been seen alive prior instead of just being "Hi, we're your family-ARGH! *dead*" I'd have been able to empathise.

What about Cyan's whole deal with technology. I thought that was pretty cool. Considering I'm a tech geek, I have to applaud him for overcoming his ignorance(unlike a LOT of people). He's cool for that at least.

As for Kefka: "Son of a submariner!". Sorry, that kills me every time.

Somebody please post so I don't end up double-posting.

I got to the World of Ruin by level 25 and got the Ragnarok Magicite soon after. Then I just went around on the island where Celes is washed up. 1EXP, 1AP per battle. Time-consuming yeah, but I was trying to unlock the Paladin shield too I think.

As far as FF7 goes, I hate the sequels and spin-offs more than the original. Sephiroth was a boring cliche and his reappearance in Advent Children was just plain dumb. FF7 has a much more outspoken group that hate it, mainly due to the sheer idiocy of the fanbase. That fanbase is easy to ignore.

For the record, my favourites are FF4 and 9, despite their own problems (lack of Amarant development, Freya's story being forgotten about and so on).

EDIT: Remind me about this technology thing. It's been a long time since I played it.

Eh, my biggest problem with FF4 is that its the living embodiment of cliche. It does some interesting things, but ultimately it feels like rehashed fantasy, and that gets old. Truthfully, thats my problem with all the FFs 1-4, and to an extent 5. Truthfully, I need to figure out which came first, FF5 or LTTP. Because the whole plot seems to cash in on the dual realities thing LTTP started X.x.

edit: On the Phantom Train he and Sabin have an argument because sabin presses a lever in curiosity and they talk about how Cyan is ignorant of technology. Yar.

edit2: Also, you have too much damn free time if you go for a low level FF6 game. Yes, I understand the whole bit about stat boosts from Magicite. I just don't give a damned.

Ahh, the FF debates.

Don't we have this, like 4-5 times a year?

:P

Anyway, I'm a big fan of FF8, mainly because the Junctioning system is so fun. It's the easiest way to customize/maximize your characters without having to spend hours and hours on end.

A turbo controller makes collecting Magic easy enough, besides.

And Triple Triad is the awesomest thing ever. If you're good enough at TT, you can get about 60 Flare just after beating Ifrit.

As for FF6...It was quite fun the first time around, but...it kinda lacks the replay value that other FFs have.

Replay value? I don't think I've ever successfully replayed an FF, with the exceptions so far being the advances, due to the new content.

I think I liked 5. It was full of cliche's and MacGuffins, but the characters had (rather cliche) problems and didn't resort to angst! Can you imagine [insert angsty character] whining if s/he had to hide his/her gender to be respected, or his/her father dissapeared, or his/her mother died while s/he was out in the world, or saw it infront of his/her own eyes, or could not remember themself?
Hey, the comic seems to be updating kind of regularly. Maybe we should vote to spread the word.

I wasn't exactly trying for a low-level game. More just trying to get enough quick and easy battles to unlock the Paladin Shield. I just happened to kill two birds with one stone and got Ultima with a few people.

Really? Because that seems a bit low level to have both ultima and the shield. Then again, you may not have done things in the recommended order, so eh.

Personally, I have no idea how that was done. I mean fuck, I couldn't even beat the floating island until my characters were all around 33-35.

Possibly involving the relm sketch bug. You can get alot of good equipment/crap for Shadow to throw that way.

I must have gotten lucky or something. I was level 25 tops at that point. Everyone on my team had level 2 magic though.
