You can go into pretty much every single item in the game and fight enemies. It was a way to not only level up, but to find some guys/people who can raise your abilites or something, as well. I never got too far into the item world.
There used to be an image here telling you to vote, but then Photobucket, the image site made to allow you to do third party hosting, no longer allows third party hosting without throwing a shitload of money at them... and I can barely afford to eat. So no you get some text of me bitching about it, yaaay! Also, go vote.
Everyday I'm tumbl'n.

You can go into any item in the game, from healing items (like the gum) to weapons and armor. Normal items have... 30 levels, I think. Rare items have 60 levels, and legendary items have 100. The levels are just randomly generated, but like every other level in the game they have set benefits for reaching certain point values (gained by defeating enemies, doing long combo chains, and solving the puzzle that's in most of the levels. The last is the best way to make large amounts of points); experience, money, and more items usually. You only have to defeat all the enemies if you want the rewards, and sometimes you can't get all the rewards, no matter what.

By going through an item you make that item more powerful. Plus, some items have certain residents that you can defeat and capture and place in other equipment to add stats to that equipment. It's also a relatively good way of grinding experience, but not really the best way to do so...

Oh, if you're just worried about Item World, in Disgaea 2, you only need to do 4 levels, and you don't even need to beat the 4th, just find the "Court Gate" on that level. Anything beyond that, since they give you a(n) eMer. Gency Exit when you first go into the Subpoena, is optional. And Subpoena enemies, at least for the storyline-given Subpoena (which is both the first time you can use Item World and the only time you need to), are fairly easy, iirc. At least not mind-numbingly, body-breakingly hard.

Is there anything to really gain? Stat boosts, a higher end-level due to some sort of group level cap, what? Seriously, its like having a 1 ball pokemon team...

>.>

edit: actually, I need to explain why this is relevant. See, I was asking for reviews, so I don't think his personal experience, with a rather silly leveling scheme, matters much in the big scheme of reviewing the game. I can't certainly understand why he wouldn't want to play though.

Seriously though, is there enough focus on choosing actual stratagies for it to be worth it?

It's the only way to obtain the really powerful equipment. You can't purchase anything of a quality greater than ordinary (the lowest of the three levels), and you'll rarely get much in the way of useful rewards for plot levels. Of course, this is helpful but not required for the main game, and REALLY useful for the aftergame. There are also item-inhabitants that increase the experience you gain from kills and the speed at which you learn a weapon, which makes the level-grinding considerably better once you work up a good one.

Of course... to get most of the good gear (as prizes) you have to master the puzzle... which is relatively easy, a friend showed me how and now I can solve any solvable puzzle, but you still have to do it, and it can be annoying.

And don't dismiss the stat boosts. They're pretty considerable. And the level-cap doesn't raise or anything, you can level build in other places. The item world is just convenient.

You can even level up old dungeons by petitioning the Dark Council. They're usually relatively easy to convince in that case.

Mostly, the item world is a better option than grinding plot levels indefinitely, when you need a little bit more to beat the next level...

... What? Are you still talking about focusing all leveling on Laharl, or just the item world thinggy in general?

I was answering your question.

"Is there anything to gain?"

You seemed to be talking about the item world. At least, your phrasing was vague enough that I couldn't tell what you were talking about, so I clarified.

Focusing on leveling Laharl alone isn't really a good idea. It's tempting because he's powerful, but he has to be an absurdly high level to beat the game on his own.

Right, which is why I kept asking if there was some reason why it was important he did that. Some reward for doing it(similiar to how in FF6, one desires to completely avoid battles, or in FE you can only fight a limited number of times, so focusing on 1 or 2 characters is viable).

No.

Other than it's temping early on and somewhat easier than actually making the other characters anything other than adaquate for a single battle.

It's actually best to have more viable characters than you can actually field in any given battle (10, and dead characters count against the limit) because this way if a character dies in an item world, you can go on without stopping. Also, there are more than 10 character types, each useful in different situations... a thief sucks in attack and defense, but can throw further than any other class, which is surprisingly important, and you want one of every mage type at first... and you need a good unarmed fighter for knocking the gatekeeper off the exit when you skip item world levels...

So I occasionally haunt GameFAQs, despite the bad turns it's taken since I first went there years ago. But anyway, the goodness or lack thereof of GameFAQs is beside the point; what I really wanted to mention is an interesting challenge I saw the last time I was there: Prinny Squad Challenge, a form of SCC (Straight Character Challenge, or 'play the game with more-or-less one 'type' of character' challenge).

Anyone thought of this?

GameFAQs poster Kylain

Prinny Squad Challenge rules:
1.) No characters aside from Prinnies are permitted to inflict damage
2.) No characters except for the Prinnies and their glorious leader Etna are allowed to be deployed from the base panel (see exceptions)
3.) Kurtis counts as a Prinny

Exceptions:
1.) Prior to Etna joining, you are allowed one designated 'thrower', and like Etna, no dealing damage.
2.) There are levels where you are flat out required to cheat, 4-4 and 10-1 come to mind, as well as unlocking a number of the Dark Sun maps. In those cases, minimum breakage of the rules should be observed.
3.) Item world: You are allowed to use any characters desired, but the damage dealing rule is not suspended.
4.) Use of a cleric to train Etna in healing and support magic is required, she can only be used on non-story maps, but you can level her by whatever means necessary. After Omega Heal is trained, she's for deletion.

^^Being as the exceptions are longer than the rules, this is sadly not the nifty, concise challenge I would have liked.

Onto observations!

1 benefit of SCC-type games, the lowest combo chance I've seen is 70%. And if you haven't seen 4 prinnies level up at the same time after killing something, you haven't lived I say!

I hope to exploit the hell out of Prinny Day at some point. Just need to find a good map for bonus gage work...

Prinnies suck! There, I said it. Obviously there's the 'monsters can't lift' issue, compounded by the fact that prinnies can't be thrown in a non-sacrificial manner. Add to this a 4 MV...God these guys are slow.

Movement aside, Prinny Barrage is a pain in the ass to aim properly, exacerbating this is its 12 dm tolerance, making the penguin's only range attack flakey as hell and a two Barrage combo a worthly of a Prinny Dance. No real complaints about the other specials, though they make Etna's use somewhat complicated.

Fun fact: Prinnies only cost 1 HL to heal or revive, which I'm sure many of you noticed. What you may not of known, was that you don't accumulated hospital HP and SP restored points from prinny injuries. Meaning that if you want to get anything of note out of the hospital aside from restoration items, use something aside from a prinny. At least they're cheap...

Etna: Her passive is disgusting beyond measure. +50% to all stats post-gear. Holy crap. The downside is that both Prinny Bomb and Pringer Beam have to hit her to get the bonus. I'm hoping to alleviate this somewhat with a Prinny Suit eventually, but I'm reasonably sure Cthulhu* is still going to fry her...

(*Didn't want to go back through and read it over again, so I'm not sure if it's mentioned in that particular part of the post, but Kylain named his Prinny Squad after Lovecraftian Elder Gods, something some of out members here might be happy, or sad because of either the GameFAQs or the Prinnies, to know)

GameFAQs can have good information on its forums if you look in just the right places(niche games).

Eh, that idea is just an extention of "Prinny Day"... and actually a more lenient one than what is in the actual rules.

Yeah, but I'm talking for the whole game, not just a map or two. Or rather Kylain's talking that, I'm relaying.

Note the word 'extension'.

It's not the only challenge of its kind, and the explaination about teaching Etna healing spells sorta spoils it.

I'd figured it was a Belmont, but I thought it was one of those pictures with a male character being turned female. Moon-something I think it's called.

It's just so hard to find Simon fan-art, let alone Chronicles Simon.

Rediculously time consuming.
Good luck finding a copy, though. I tried, got one off Amazon, it was scratched.

Yeah, that's part of the problem as well.

I should probably ask my local EB games if they have a copy.
