Other interesting examples from Paper Mario are the spear wielding enemies that raise and lower their spears(an enemy changing its own vulnerabilities triggered lets say by events like using a certain attack, although FF4 kinda ABUSED that and did it over and over again), or the flying enemies that lost their wings. And the thing with the focus shifting is you want to eliminate the advantage of just sticking with one stance in that it saves you turns, or its no better than equipment or classes/spells. I like how Golden Sun handled djinn in that respect, but I can't help but feel there was something more to be done with that kind of system. edit: and while water/fire shouldn't work well logically, ice/fire or fire/wind would. |

I've been playing uper Columbine Massicre RPG.... It's a little surreal. I was in my senior year of high school when Collumbine happened. Now looking at the title to this you would think it was a game made to cheapen the tradgedy. I doesn't. It mearly retells it from the killers eyes. But the game is not really about Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold (I dunno if I spelled that right). It is more about society. It asks the questions reguarding what causes someone to do this kind of attack. It does mention violent video games and music, it shows the killers took solice in them, but it wasn't wat made them want to kill their entire school. They went through what many of us go through. They felt alone. When you are watching the cutscenes you feel sorry for them. However, once the shooting starts, you feel sorry for the victems too. The people who get shot in this game are just ordinary high school students, as well as a few teachers. It's great social comentary... It's definatt not safe for work but certainly worth a playthrough. That is unless you are squeemish about this sort of thing. |

Hrm. Some of the suggested things might be hard to program, but would likely be quite worth it. Of course, it would be necessary to ensure that such things as knowledge of an enemies state are seeable on screen. You catch me? Some of the ideas, like having certain attacks induce elemental based changes in state, would be easy to do. It's the one where using an attack changes the state that concerns me. |

status effect, fire against a metallic enemy makes the metal become softer, lowering the defense stat significantly to the point where a near invulnerable opponent is cut like butter |

Right, I understand the strengths and limitations of the suggestion. I've basically moved it from a coding problem into an art problemXD. |

Yeah, and also consider what sort of effects would be had within the context of the system. |

So, while I got no games for Christmas, I did find a few rare volumes of forgotten gaming lore recently, and completed a few I owned. Ghost in the Shell - A good game, but obscenely short. You can finish it in about, roughly, 4-6 hours. Multiplayer is a blast though, and it does feel very much like you're playing an episode of the show. To any huge fans of the series, I would recommend it, but otherwise it's too short for me to honestly say it would be a good buy. Maybe a rental. Reign of Fire - Who knew a crappy movie could make for a rather enjoyable game? I haven't gotten too far in because the difficulty is fairly punishing (The first mission is completely insane, and the second one I have yet to beat yet), but it's a blast. Missions are crazy and action-every-second affairs, the foes lack variety but make up for it by being tricky and powerful (Being not too far in, they might open up more later). The ally AI is actually not bad which is one of the strongest things I advise about it, because you can only play so many games as the Solo-Gunman-Rambo-Ultrahero before you want a good game that makes it feel like you're actually fighting a war with allies, and battling against dragons with rocket launchers and machineguns while in jeeps makes for a fun war. Blood Will Tell - An extremely rare game, I was only able to find a battered copy missing both box and instructions, and with a critical flaw if you don't skip over the opening cinematic. However, the game itself is solid and fun. You play a warrior who, as a child, was assaulted and lost 48 vital organs and limbs to the 48 Fiends that torment humanity in an Ancient Japan style setting. A kind healer crafted him replacement parts and built in weapons to fight back against the demons to reclaim his lost parts. Right off the bat the game does a good job of making you feel badass as you tear through lesser demons, and the Fiend battles are fairly entertaining. On top of fairly fun gameplay, the excellent story keeps things going with very little lag occuring (Sometimes having to wade through tons of lesser demons to get to the more fun Fiend battles can be tiring, but never enough so to be frustrating as battling lesser demons is a good way to level up your weapons). If you can actually find it, I would recommend this game to action fans. Resident Evil 4 - Not a new game I got, but one I just beat. It was good, but kind of dissapointing. The boss battles were all too easy (The first boss of the entire game is actually the most fun, and from that battle the bosses become less and less interesting, until you face the final boss which I beat on my first try with no help from a walkthrough), and I actually had a harder time with some of the regular enemy fights. Plus, the whole thing seems filled with Dues Ex Machina in the final battles making it all kind of seem like they backed themselves into a corner at the end and had to slap together a happy ending by force (Although it leads to one of the most awsome scenes I've played recently in a game: Battling through a horde of Los Plagas infected soldiers with a helicopter gunship backing you up, having to get through doorways and tunnels as the gunship is blowing up turret defenses and gunning down hordes attacking you). If only the past Resident Evil games were more like RE4, I'd look into them... |

a little message box popping up at the top of the window: "<ENEMYNAME> starts melting!" just write a little script for trigger-response in combat, where triggers can be any change in state (with the thing that caused the change as input), and responses can be any number of things. |

Hmm... You know, the first boss is a giant...turtle...like thing. I was thinking of having it do a Shell move that would increase its defence(oddly, in this system it is only possible to have a state change induced once, and the only way to manipulate stats is to change a battlers state). But what if it also decreased its defence? And it had another move that enabled it to emerge from its shell... That kinda works. Anyway... The second character, Ray, is not gonna be a problem. My brother has actually taken an interest in helping with him. So, uh, let's look at the black mage Rikav. I've decided that seven classes each is indeed too much, and trimmed the fat of the healer classes, making it five instead. Bye-bye therapist and priest. So, for the other classes there will be five subclasses each. In Rikavs case, we have something interesting happening here. He learns fifteen moves on each class: Five from three different elementals. None of the classes cross over with each other. Each of the elementals have five moves in them. 1:- The basic spell. Hits one enemy. 2:- Like the basic spell, but weaker, hits all the enemies, and costs more to cast 3:- Like the basic spell, but a bit more powerful and has a higher chance of state changing 4:- Like 3, except it hits all enemies (and does less damage in a similar vein to 2) 5:- The most powerful, costly spell, and it hits everyone in the battle regardless of whose side they are on. Also to make things more interesting, the order the spells are learned in determines the actual base strength. That is, if we have spells all of the same level, the weakest would be learned first and the strongest would be learned last out of them. Now then. What of the elements and class alignments? Druid:- Beast, Nature, Earth Sage:- Poison, Light, Gravity Wizard:- Fire, Ice, Magnetic Mage:- Sonic, Water, Wind Sorceror:- Electric, Nuke, Dark There are only so many synonyms available for "Magic user". Naturally, these elements play off each other in a similar but markedly different way to Pokemon. Stat progression/equipment have yet to be considered, sadly. I'll get back to you on that. |

Hrm.... I'd trade out fire for electric and ice for water. No real reason except than in my head I see sorcerors as more fire guys, and that gives Wizard/Mage/Sorceror all one of the major elements each. Then again, I wasn't there when you were deciding how the elements play off each other so I don't know:-P. |

Nature uses more plant based attacks than earth. Magnetic has a slightly different effect upon other elementals than electric. For instance, it has a vulnerability to water. It also actually has a strength against electricity. Fire and nuke...While they are both strong against ice, nuke is weak against gravity, magnetic, electricity and dark. Fire on the other hand is weak against water, earth, dark and suchlike. There are other differences between them in terms of attack as well. Fire can set a character on fire(gee, duh), which damages them every turn they are on fire. Nuke can cause a character to become irradiated, which reduces MP each turn... And for the players, also prevents them from gaining EXP at the end of a battle. Magnetic can magnetise a player, rendering them fairly powerless against attacks with metal weaponry. Also, electric attacks drastically increase in effectiveness against them. Electricity...doesn't really have a status effect yet. Uh... Shocked? Makes the character incapable of acting for a few turns. Does that help figure out the differences? And, you know, I might try that out Juron. Yeah, I more or less went with "What looks best with that class name" as opposed to thinking it through properly. |
