That would be nice, if enemies wernt just traditionally bunched up together so that you either hit one or all, you could have colum/row, aoe, and other patterns of attack. |

So...The positioning of the enemies matters...Interesting, and very possible. The precise positioning of the sprites used in the battle are stored elsewhere, but would be fully accessible. Using that, it would be possible to ascertain distance and relative position. The only trouble being, of course, indicating within the context of an attack the area that is hit. I'll think on that some more. It would be immensely useful, as it would do nothing to detract from the experience and add a layer of strategy to the battles that would surely get me mentioned. Also, for Multimedia Design, I am allowed to...get this...tell a story using a game engine as part of my coursework. Which is 30% of the total mark. The remaining 70% being the exam. Which is open book, and the questions are around the coursework. |

I picked up the latest Yugioh game, Spiritcaller based on GX, and you get a duel spirit. Chazz gets the Ojama's I presume Jaden gets Winged Kuribo. Kaiba would have Blue eyes Yugi would have Dark Magician ...I get Ocisllo Hero #2 what the fuck man |

Hey if you pull it off Winged Kuribo lv. 10 will END a game quickly, pulling it off is the problem though, but the Flute of Summoning Kuribo is some nice tech too. But seriously OH #2 has nothing going for it, crist atleast give me something that has a fusion. |

How does this sound? At the end of each turn, there is a 1/4 chance that the enemy will switch positions, altering the effectiveness of the different attacks on them as a group. Similarly, the party would have the standard front row/back row formation with a slight twist. Depending on who is in what row, the players space out or bunch together. Like if there were two in front and two at back. They would form a square, which would make them a prime target for spells that are area effective. Also, to a lesser extent, spells that hit rows or columns. Similar ideas can be put out to every possible combination of them. You get the idea there? I like it, really. It could work really well, and all of the stuff we've discussed could come together to make a really great battle system that maintains the interest of the player. |

Yeah, sounds interesting enough - Its always a tendancy to have two warriors and two spellcasters but to backrow the spell casters. |

Thinking about it for a moment made me realise there are only three other variations. The only difference being who is where. All characters in the same row (because having everyone on the back row and having them take less damage is stupid) One character in front and the rest behind One character at back and the rest in front. Of course, then we look at three party teams. Two in back, one in front Two in front, one in back. All in same row. And the two party team One in front, one in back all in same row. And the one person by themselves... Yeah. So, something on the menu that allows the player to decide on a formation and who goes where. Then, when battle starts, it will calculate who will go where. |

Idea for one person by themselves: range. Close=don't have to waste time walking to attack, and can maybe attack more than once in one turn, a la Chrono Trigger (which I got for Christmas. Yay me.) but also may be attacked by enemy more than once in one turn. ...but this has the capacity to become needlessly complicated. |

I've backrowed my entire party before - but only because they could all do the same damage from backrow. edit: eh, its an interesting counterbalance against backrowing, but I don't see things getting improved much on the defensive side. Monster attacks and formation are almost entirely random and uncontrolled anyways. I don't see much point in improving the defensive options at this time. Theres not much to profit there. edit: how about as a simplier solution, you give enemies the ability to attack either the front or back column, but leave the players alone? |

Ah, but there's the trick. Think about it. One turn, a move will hit lots of the enemies at once. The next, it won't. You have to go for a different approach. It makes you think, keeps you on your toes. This is a good thing. |

I'm refering to this formation stuff. See edit about not using formations. Its much the same thing to give enemies the ability to attack front row, back, or both. |
