Another issue with the games is having too many things to keep track of. If you quit a game for a little while and forget where you are, and are thusly screwed, it's kind of discouraging.

BoF: Dragon Quarter is a good example of this...
Live and learn - or die and teach by example.

Agree'd... Honestly, that's why I tend to start a lot of games over. I just plum forget where I am and what I'm doing.

If the plot is too involved, I have that problem as well. Of course, sometimes it's not too hard to get caught up if the game is on rails (I played FFX and took a nearly year long break. Came back, tooled around a bit, and realized exactly where I was again).

Yeah, but I think in a lot of cases making a game TOO linear is a problem. I *like* a little freeform in my games. Of course TOO MUCH free form is just as much a problem as too little.

I tend to prefer freeform in all games. Fallout was great because you could stumble on the enemy base right off the bat if you ran off into the desert and just explored.

You could talk your way into a nice suit of armor that way too if you were charismatic enough...

Yeah, I like it when you have to explore a bit to figure out what to do next.

When I think out it, that's kinda why I like city builders and games like Dungeon Keeper. Yeah, it's mission based, but there's no one way to beat the mission. Gods, I've replayed Dungeon Keeper, Pharaoh, and Zeus sooo many times...

Even in a city builder I don't need a quest to have fun. Dungeon Keeper 2 and the "My Pet Dungeons" rocked in that case.

Civilization.

Yeah, the My Pet Dungeons were really cool. In Zeus, for example, there's a Sandbox mode. When I just want to build a city, I'll mess with that for a while.

As far as I'm concerned the only advancement characters should be having should be lateral or TEMPORARY(like a powerup that goes away when you use it or after some time or when a particular round/turn of a game is over).

Interesting. That's why you don't like RPGs, or something, right? Because the power ups are generally permanent.

Exactly. Permanent Powerups take control of some portion of the winning or losing of a battle out of your hands. Of course, very minor powerups like a slight hp increase(heart tank in mmx) can have very neglible effects, but in principle they amount to the same thing. In theory, all weapon upgrades in a megaman game, or all characters in a fighting game are a form of lateral powerup, I.E. your not really at an advantage, you just interact with the game differently. Of course, since these things have to be coded in an abstract way, balance is often approximated or ignored. Ideally, you would want to manipulate these values until it is as close to "perfect balance" as possible, but outside forces like character bias prevent this from actually happening most of the time. Of course, these different ways of interacting often corrispond to actual human skillsets(reaction timing, perception, spatial awarness, memorization, dexderity, etc), and theres bias for or against these very elements as well. To sum it up: theres always a character that is imbalanced, and its not that this couldn't have been fixed in testing, those are planted because the game is intended to be that way the same way rpgs have their leveling systems. Alot of people woln't compete at something(buy the product) unless they can get the reward of winning at little to no effort.

and I'm not really done, but I'll stop the wall of text here.

The only problem with temporary powers is that it creates very repetitive game play, which is one of the reasons I find the 3D Mario games to be near unplayable.

Well, the problem with Mario powerups isn't that they are temporary... its that they only really do ONE THING, just like Mario himself... <_<

And most games do have permanent power ups, look at Zelda, and Mega man most of the bosses in the games are wimps when you have the right power up, weapon in this case.

In Zelda, does your attacking ability really increase, or is it just a modifier? Since you actually have to aim and crap, and enemies are powering up by the same order, and the powerups themselves are rare and at static periods in the game, its a moot point unless your backtracking. Sure you could easily say some of the tools are imbalanced but the sword and shield upgrades are negligible at best.

edit: Lemme put it another way: At any particular goal point in the game, every player will have the same or roughly the same abilities. There is some room for missed items, but not really that great a deal of one.

I would say double attack power is more than Negligible, especially when it takes the final boss from 6 hits to kill down to 3.

But how hard is it to get those extra 3 hits with a level 2 sword as opposed to level?

Don't worry, if the Bison ever take over the midlands Godzilla will take care of them. Just like he did with Bambi.

That's entirely relative.

In FFX, at the absolute peak of damage, you can oneshot the final boss.

In Golden Sun, at the absolute peak, it still takes you in the neighborhood of 15-30 turns of your entire party attacking to kill the boss.

Double attack power's value changes from game to game.

Too few posts for a custom title
If you want to look at it non-cynically, making an activity in a game that strengthens your character(s), whether it's smacking goons or spelunking, adds to it a level of satisfaction for some people. Some activities satisfy because they're intrinsically fun, some satisfy because they further or reveal a story, some satisfy because they give the player's avatar more abilities or bigger numbers.

The problems arise, for me at least, when this is abused (hmm... abuse of things causes problems. Salute me, for I am Captain Obvious!). Either advancement takes too long or it stops being meaningful, and it becomes, at that point, nothing more than a necessity or a chore, and not recreation.
