How is it a parody... ? I believe it has all it takes to be an RPG. |

I define any game designed for humorus purposes. A parody. I mean, the fight screen looks like a drug-induced halucenation, the attack spells look like lines, one charecter is named Poo, the Wise Old Man style person who starts you off is a bee that gets killed by an old woman who just slaps it, the final boss is defeated by praying, etc. |

Well, it still counts as an RPG game-play wise; it just doesn't have the story and stuff that you're used to in an RPG. |

Hmmm... you know, I could make a comment about that, but This Guy can describe it much better than me. Edit: Just a quick warning, long essay discussing the literary value of Earthbound ahead. Read if you have time. |

I still see it as a parody of conventional RPGs. I still love it, I merely place it in a diferent category than I do DWs, FFs, and Chrono trigger. |

I don't see it as a parody, as everything in there is done for a distinct purpose beyond humor. Yes, it is funny. It's supposedly even funnier in the original japanese, where the dialouge is supposedly filled with puns. However, it's not a parody. It's an RPG in the same style as Dragon Warrior, just with funny dialouge. But it's also the only RPG in my memory where Spoiler: click to toggle That alone is a big deal for me, since recently, I've become obsessed with video games that realize that they are video games.

Funny dialoge, a funny battle screen, funne people in it, funny powers, funny graphics, funny events, a funny name, etc. And breaking the fourth wall is funny. |

A parody needs something that it is parodying. Earthbound is quite unique. Hilarious, yes. Parody, no. And HE? It's not exactly a traditional RPG, by any stretch of the imagination, either. |

It is parodying the RPG genre itself. |

How is it not a traditional RPG? It's done in the same style of gameplay as Dragon Warrior, just with a few twists. Speaking of DW... I'd like to hear your reasons for saying DWVII is the best game ever, Lurk. From all I've heard, it's a 200 hour RPG. |

Genres aren't something you parody... they're something you mock, or pay homage to. Specific games/movies/books are what one parodies. EDIT: Well, traditional means I know exactly what's going on. I put down my special version of Earthbound because I had no idea what I was doing in battle. |

MFD: How hard is it to tell what's going on in battle? Your characters are the boxes, the enemies are in front of you. Lurk: I could say alot of the same stuff of other RPGs (2, 3, 6 and 7 all apply heavily to my favorite RPG in general, Disgaea, and Time Travel doesn't interest me as much,) What does this RPG do that no one else has ever done before? |

A game need not be revolutionary to be pure fun. I have no clue why this game is so great, but I love every minute I spen playing it. |

Fine. What buttons do I push? Maybe if I had a copy that came with instructions... |

I'm fairly certain A is select action and B is cancel, like most RPGs. Edit: Oh, and L and Select have the same function as A and B respectively. And your copy didn't come with instructions? How does that work? |
