See GJ, that is a good RPG... (though I have never played any poke game except SSBM, but i have played moster rancher).

The market is absolutely flooded with mediocre or creappy RPG's.

I too, still play sonic, in fact there is a genesis in the guys lobby here and a lot of people have been playing it in the 2 moths its been sitting there.

That's always been the bit I hated...Required levelling fills me with with enough rage to burn down the sun. Except in a few select SRPGs. I never really minded doing it in FFTactics for some bizarro reason. I liked FF6 mainly because the level you were at was almost immaterial to whether you won or not.

...No, one-dimensionality is NOT a precondition of pasta!  What about lasagna?  Well, sure, but something can be zero-dimensional and still be pasta! It's not geometry, its semolina content. Yes, I suppose you could make mobius pasta. No, I'd draw the line at orthogon-os...

I kinda like fighting on the Veldt in FF6 because you dont get XP. Some espers hase spells you want but level up stats you dont.

That's the thing with RPGs... I don't play for story... I play to satisfy my obsessive desire to perfect, to build up...

It's the same reason I always play Sim City 2000 with disasters off and the bug that nets you 200k profits a month...

I play them because I like to win tough battles, not slash through hundreds of easy ones. That works exactly once in any given game, and then only if attrition becomes a serious threat...

I prefer the big ones, too, but I have to admit, seeing my characters gain a new attack or go up in stats makes the farming almost worth it...

I like all three aspects, tough battles, good story, learning new abilities...

If a game is missing any of those elements I can't consider it a good RPG.

Eh...It pays off once, to see the neatness, but I just don't have the interest to farm around for one. I'd rather barely struggle through the same battle at an impossibly low level than wipe it out with Der Uberspell (tm).

Very very few games tempt me to uberlevel.

I think the only RPG's I've uberbuilt in are FF 7, CT, and SO2.

Now SRPG's are much more fun to uberlevel... FFT, Disgaea... more Disgaea... Characters and Weapons in Disgaea.... :P

Item world blows my mind in Disgaea. I try to get every Geo point combo maxed out.

Re: Attachment to characters

I get like that when the game is easy...but when it gets rough...

Again...the Kraken battle in Shining Force II. Played it on the highest difficulty. Took four hours and six attempts to get through, and at the end, using a damn good strategy, every character still died except the main guy, who had to solo the Kraken's wounded head, and only survived it with ten hp left. THAT was an awesome battle...

I overleveled in Disgaea, to compensate I didnt do anything but plot battles when I was overlevel at ch 7 of Phantom Brave. By the last few chapters I was underlevel, and took 3 tries to beat the boss.

Incidentally, Baal in Disgaea still uses me like a rag doll.

That's one thing I don't like about SFIII and the SF Remake... they penalise you for losing characters...

How? More than ten gold pieces per level? Heh...value of human life, right there.

In SF Remake, they make it so the character won't tell you the rest of their story if they die. You'll have to wait for the next playthrough.

In SFIII, they lose trust in the rest of the party (or is it vice-versa?) and get downgraded one level on the totally awesome friendship system.

Aww man...no more making that damn phoenix the party bitch as revenge for hogging all the XP when the computer controls him...

Edit: That should read "...otherwise totally awesome friendship system"...

It's nothing big, it just drops the benefits you get from a totally optional but kickass benefits system...

Aww. Still, that's the sort of thing that'd cause me to play through battles hundreds of agonizing times, until a no-kill outcome was reached. I dunno if it'd be enough to force me into leveling, though.
