ah, that explains much.

truly there is wisdom in nonsense.

because of this, I am now time traveling backwards a few minutes merely to post 1-100 of the alt-numpad sequence in the random thread

Never said that, notty. Still, 85% chance looks good but is not infallible, and neither is the 20% chance of counterattack. Never stopped them from occuring...

When you act, you take a risk. That's realism.

Never said there shouldn't be risks. I just get pissed off when I lose things permanently.

Yes, sometimes the RNG can mess with you, but you generally shouldn't need to put units in the situation where they either have to kill or be killed.

If you think the stats for a particular unit vs unit fight are bad, then you should wait until you have a better weapon or better unit to do the job properly.

That's the thing... playing that conservatively makes the game too slow for my tastes.

I'm not saying the game's bad, just that it doesn't appeal to me at all.

It's supposed to be slow. It's a strategy game, not a "run in and kill everything" game.

Here we go again with the 'opinion as fact' crap. ;P J/K, you all know I gave that up way back...a few hours ago.

Fair enough, GJ.

On the subject of Shining Force, it was an okay game, but I always felt that the battles went too slowly, even for a SRPG.

Yoshi Touch and Go... after one day, my high score in the Score Attack is 275. Get it up to 300, and I unlock one of the missing modes. Whee.

From a fan of the Shinings for nearly a decade (Though without a Saturn, I never got ahold of 3):

Shining Force = fun. Resurrecting dead characters might have been a tad too easy in the first game and on the lower difficulty levels of the second, but if you think that's the case, try playing SF2 on "Ouch!" The thing is that the price of defeat generally gets paid in gold, rather than men

In the easy levels, a dead guy could be brought back for a cheap price (10 gold per level), and you rarely ever lose one. Only other consequence is that the deaths count on their scorecard goes up, which just looks messy.

In the higher levels, enemies deal you so much damage that, even if you win the fight, you often find yourself spending more than half your profits from any given battle raising your dead troops and replenishing your healing items, which are absolutely essential for any battle. Further, the leveling system is constructing in such a way that most characters who fall behind or get ahead in terms of XP (the only exception being healers) can't level without some serious help, so power-leveling doesn't even help much. I lost nearly every penny I owned struggling to defeat the Kraken...

Also, the game does have a high element of luck involved. Each attack has a certain (and fairly high: 15-20%, maybe, it depends on stats.) chance of missing, hitting twice, drawing a counterattack, or some combination of the three. And damn, does it foul up your strategy sometimes. Personally, I like that. Makes you rethink on the fly. If I wanted a totally predictable game, I'd go play chess.

You'll be disappointed in the character stories - not many of them have their own little histories, but there's over thirty in each game - what do you expect? The character differences however, are pretty pronouced - every caster in the game has a unique spell list, and every fighter a slightly different style, and in SF2, secret class-change items bump up that aspect even more.

...No, one-dimensionality is NOT a precondition of pasta!  What about lasagna?  Well, sure, but something can be zero-dimensional and still be pasta! It's not geometry, its semolina content. Yes, I suppose you could make mobius pasta. No, I'd draw the line at orthogon-os...

Over thirty? There are...I think 32, but it might be more...characters in Chrono Cross, and while they did screw up almost everything else, each character does have a unique history and backstory to them.

Yeah, but Shining Force was on the Genesis... not much room on the carts... don't know if that had any effect...

They aren't too long. Wasn't time for much more than a single scene with each extra character. A few get extra screen time though.

I skipped ahead on my .hack games and began the third one (didn't save anything though). Now I've uncovered a major spoiler about Mistral, and realised that I probably won't be able to use her in battle after part two. Oh well, back to spending countless times getting game overs on the dragon again.

...

OK, so I beat the dragon yesterday, and now I have Mia and Tsukasa... I mean... Elk. I'm going to search for some Spiral Blade thingy right now.

Light, how I miss those games.... Shame that at the one place in my area that carries all four for rental, I've got massive late fees, and everywhere else only has Mutation and Quarantine....

Mistral comes back in Part 4, thankfully.
