They both fared so wonderfully on their own! This just proves that when you take wonderful concepts, such as fish, and other wonderful concepts, such as pastry, putting them both together doesn't necessarily mean wonder-squared. Nobody likes a flounder tart. |

I dunno. Square started floundering a while before the merger. I mean... FFVIII... and let's not mention the utter mess that was the movie. I'm not as familiar with Enix, except the Star Ocean series... and the second installment of that is pretty old, but a very good game... |

The PSX age of Final Fantasies really only had Tactics as its saving grace, but Final Fantasy X had given me hope that they were starting to recover from the extremely painful transition. It wasn't as great as it could have been, but it was a step up from such horrors as VIII, or IX's failed attempt to recapture VI's glory. EDIT: And a VERY LARGE step up from Sephiroth. |

I liked both Final Fantasy X and Final Fantasy X-2. ... You heard me. *Prepares to be burned at the stake by the rest of the forum* |

There used to be an image here telling you to vote, but then Photobucket, the image site made to allow you to do third party hosting, no longer allows third party hosting without throwing a shitload of money at them... and I can barely afford to eat. *sets Car on fire* Now, someone find us a stake. FFX ended beautifully, I thought. It...it was a real ending. Powerful, emotional, something that tugged at your heart. I cried. And then I played X-2. And I cried, because it ruined X's beautiful ending. |

I liked VIII and IX. Sure VIII tried something different and the story wasn't the greatest but it wasn't total shit. |
|
Arrakis teaches the attitude of the knife--chopping off what's incomplete and saying: "Now, it's compete because it's ended here." --from "Collected Sayings of Muad'Dib" by the Princess Irulan, Frank Herbert's Dune So....what do you get when you mix Final Fantasy, Fire Emblem, and Disgaea? Well, for one, a bunch of pissed off FF/FE/Disgaea fanboys/girls, but that's neither here nor there. - Notty, Games and Stuff. | |

There's a difference between "trying something different" and "trying something different that is utter crap". The graphics were about the only positive side of VIII. The story...might have been better if a) the characters were not all stereotypes, b) the characters actually developed over the course of the story instead of remaining stereotypes, and c) considering their entire gimmick was "We're going to revolve this one around a love story, rather than what we usually do", it sure would have been nice for there to have been a love story. |

Okay, that quote gets a gold star... Time for FZ's rant about all the FF games. Why? Because we are discussing them and I said so. FFI: Not bad. It was the start of the series, what do you want? It was simple, it was fun, it worked. It was FF before it was FF. FFII: Never played. Heard it sucks. FFIII: Never played. Haven't even heard much about it... I've heard the big battle between the best FFs being IV and VI. I haven't been able to play far into FFIV since I have a broken rom of it and can't find any others, but the story doesn't seem bad. FFV is bad. It seems sort of like FFVI, but worse. The story is silly, the main characters dull, and it's only saving grace is the Job Class system. But I don't play FF games for the number crunching and gameplay, I play them for the excellent stories, and V's was lacking. FFVI is one of the greatest games commited to digital medium, ever, and always holds a warm place in my cold, black heart. I thought VII was good, but since I first liked it I think that the Fanboys/girls have killed it to death. The fans are so horrible, it makes me actually like the game less... The story was interesting enough, the characters had enough depth to make you care. Hell, I even liked the bad guys they were so well done. Well... I liked the Shinra Corp bad guys at least... The battle system was decent, the minigames were a load of fun (Who knew inbreeding chocobos to get the elusive Gold Chocobo could be so rewarding?). Overall a good game. VIII was alright. Not great, but alright. I wanted to play to the end, more out of some dedication to the FF series then because I wanted to reach the end (The same dedication that makes me buy all the games and never beat one of them...). The "Love Story" played a small roll, the story was dull and forgetable (Seriously, after a while I stopped paying attention to the story and just kept mechanically playing like some sort of brain-dead idiot. I can tell you what they did, but for the life of me I can't recall why.), and the gameplay SUCKED. The whole "You get stronger, they get stronger" thing just did not work. While I am thankful they took out "Spend 47 hours to power up for the next section" part of the game, the inclusion of Infinite Use Guardian Forces meant they became my attack of choice. Seriously, for about three discs, I just ran from every regular battle, and used GFs on all the bosses. And upgrading weapons sucked to. And so did the "Limited Magic" system. In fact, now that I think about it, this game really did suck, and didn't really have any redeeming value... So, to sum that up, FFVIII sucks. FFIX sucked. A lot. It was just, ugh. They wanted to recapture FFVI, but they failed misreably. This game was so boring, I didn't even bother to try and finish it. I said to myself, "Man I'm bored... Why am I still playing this?", turned it off, and have yet to feel the need to go back to it. It just kicked everything good about VI, threw it out the window, and threw in some random crap to replace it. I actually like FFX. It isn't my favorite, but it isn't as horrible as many seem to think. The plot has some nifty twists (And some stupid, stupid ones...), the characters have personality and you can relate to, and the battle system is actually one of my favorites out of all the games. I personally don't have a problem with it, except for the stupid Sphere Grid system, and Seymor Guado is the worst evil villain EVER... I played a demo of FF-X2. I bought the game out of that strange compulsion of mine, but I have yet to even take the packaging off of it... Partly because I don't want to play it before I beat FFX, partly because I'm afraid of it... The Active Battle System returns at a speed that could make a sugar munching ADHD child ask to slow down and be less confusing, the Dress-Sphere system is like a Fanservice version of Job Classes and still sucks, the story seems to go down the drain, and they brutally rape the original personality and characters for these new versions... I miss Yuna when she was quiet and kind and had all the backbone of a jellyfish... Even after seeing and playing FFX2, I still cite FFXI as the thing that first made me fear that Squaresoft, the company that once brought us FFVI, had gone totally batshit insane. I haven't been keeping track of FFXII... I think that covers everything... |

Lessee... FFs by the numbers! 1: I kinda liked it. Good battle system. Innovative. No story. 2: Most people hated it. I liked it. For some reason smacking your buddy in the face with a sword to make them stronger always appealed to me. 3: Never played it. 4: Fun, good story, 'n everything. Great characters, even though no one, y'know, actually died. Except Tella. 5: Great Job system. The story gets a little better near the end. And I like Gilgamesh. 6: What FZ said. And square it. 7: Hated it near the end. Sephiroth was a lame villain, no offense. Shinra was better. I really liked the Turks. 8: Crap. Utter crap. Especially when the major plot twist was "oh my god, we all came from the same orphanage! ... But we forgot." 9: I actually kinda liked it, but that may have just been in comparison to 8. 10: I rather liked it. Good story, graphics, all right battle system, and I kinda liked the sphere grid... 10-2: Well... Hey, it has fanservice, doesn't it? All in all, it's okay. Not spectacular though. But I kinda like the ATB system.

*nods at everything FZ said here* I do enjoy mocking the "love story" of VIII. If they weren't so hardset in their stereotypes and refusing to change, maybe there could have been one. One of the most romantic scenes in the game.... Squall: Why aren't you in your seat? Rinoa: I want to sit in your lap. Squall: You should be in your seat. Rinoa: But it's comfy here. Squall: Get in your seat. Rinoa: I love you. Squall: Go sit in your seat. |

*Sniff* Their love is so true, it brings a tear to my eye... Seriously, every time I read that I laugh... Every time... And the sad thing is, it's so true... And there is nothing wrong with the ATB system, but FFX2 seems to have brought it back on crack. I don't know about in the full game, but in the demo it worked WAY to fast. Seriously, by the time I could go through the menus to get off one attack, I would be attacked about three or four times, and both my other party members would be back at full bar. |

In the game, it still works way too fast. Maybe VIII's plot would have been better if it had made sense. Imagine if the main enemy was Adel, trying to free herself from the moon, instead of Ultimecia with some stupid time-compression thingy. |

I really don't have opinions on most of them, so... VI: What they said, pretty much. Awesome game. IX: Good game. I don't see why it gets so much hate... And why do you all forget about Tactics: Great game. Nice change of battle system (I like Tactical battle systems), and a job class, which I'll agree with is an awesome idea... not to mention a good, but different storyline than the other games... |

Wasn't a big Tactics fan. I liked the story a lot, but the gameplay made me wince in pain... Also, wasn't it actually another game that had FF references thrown in for localization purposes? |

I liked Final Fantasy Tactics. It was my fun happy time when trying to recover from the absolute horror of the PSX Final Fantasies. It was their saving grace, and just more evidence that they weren't beyond hope as they rapidly descended into the christian Hell with VII through IX. |

I don't dislike XI. It's a MMORPG, and that is the craze these days. However, I do disapprove of it being numbered. Tactics wasn't numbered. Neither was Legends or Adventure. The title of Final Fantasy XI should have been given to a real Final Fantasy, and this one should have been another special, such as Final Fantasy Online, or Final Fantasy MMORPG, or something like that. |
