Sony and Microsoft can afford to sell at a loss because they have other electronics that sell well.

The point is that that practice is illegal. Microsoft gets away with it because, well, they're microsoft. Sony, on the other hand, might not be so lucky. I hope.

So, recently I've been on a City of Heroes kick, so I grabbed the 14 day free trial...

It's fantastic! I didn't know an MMOG could be like this. The grind is there, but it's actually made fun (It never gets old saving someone from a group of gangsters, and having them actually thank you afterwards). The missions are hard, but it's far more rewarding when you complete them, so instead of just crapping out Random Mission of the Day like in AO, missions actually feel like you're accomplishing something. Enhancements are something I'm still learning, but so far nifty, and really do make it so that while you don't have a horde of powers, you still have something to do at lower levels.

And everything you've heard about Character Creation is true. It's single-handedly almost as fun as the actual game! I've made heroes I have no intention of using, just to play around with the Character Creator.

Now if you'll excuse me, the Hellions are getting uppity again, it's time for Dr. Aeternus to hit the streets and fight for great justice!

What server FZ? next time you're on, send a Global Message to @ThunderByrd

I prolly won't be on until the weekend, but I WILL get the message ^_^

Honestly, you popped on at a great time. Issue Five is in development, and as I understand it, they're gonna add some more powers, and after CoV comes out, the level cap goes up to 75. It's at 50 right now....

I absolutely LOVE that game.... have you, perchance looked at Perez Park or The Hollows yet?

You know, it really is amazing that the battles in City of Heroes really DON'T ever get old... I mean, I figured at some point they would, but I can still be walking along and saving people from thugs that are more then five levels lower then me, and it's still fun... Probably because the further I go, the more powers I unlock, and the more battles become about tricks and unleashing combos of powers for maximum effect (My favorite trick so far is hitting them with Ring of Fire to lock them in place, then Rain of Fire to whittle away their life while they can't escape).

Also, probably the best compliment I can give is: It feels like a Single-Player game, that just happens to have other people in it. Seriously, in my entire time playing (Okay, it's been one day, but still.) I haven't needed to group once, and I'm doing great. However, if I stumble into some baddies that are too tough for me, sometimes I'll be saved when another hero comes along and either gives me a heal, or helps me stomp the bad guys. I'll thank them, and they'll be on their way. The community is great here, and isn't full of all the idiots I've seen in other MMOGs.

Also, the missions aren't exactly what I thought they would be, they're better. I thought missions were randomized, which gave you pretty much infinite, but always bland options. Not true. Missions actually follow their own little mini-stories. Every mission advances the current plot a little bit (Each villain group has it's own little storyline you can follow), and makes your contacts release better and better equipment to you, eventually letting you choose your next contact, and thus what villains you'll be fighting in the next string of missions.

There are also Task Forces, which I'm not strong enough to tackle yet but greatly intrigue me. They're like a Mega-Story, where you MUST group with a certain number of other heroes, and then over the course of a series of missions you battle foes until you do battle with, and defeat, an Arch-Villain, earning you a badge and completing that storyline.

Also, badges. Badges are gained either for exploration, or doing missions or deeds. They're not vital, but they are just one more little thing you can do to pass the time if you don't feel like following missions or stomping baddies. You can just fly around and try to stumble on Exploration points, or you can hunt down certain enemies and defeat them to get badges for that. Some badges even give you powers, or effect your stats for getting them, so they're worth trying to hunt down.

However, my only complaint so far is that travel is SLOW. And it will be a while still before I can get Flight or Super Speed to ease it up... But that's pretty minor and will be resolved eventually.

So, to sum it up, City of Heroes: Everything MMOGs SHOULD be.

EDIT: Whoa, freaky, I was making a CoH post as Mike responded to my last one...

I'm on Infinity Server. My global chat is Dr. Aeternus, but my current character is Dr. Immortalis.

I've visited both The Hollows and Perez Park... And both of them regularly kick my ass. I hope that next level I'll pick up another power, and that should be enough to let me take on the Trolls in The Hollows (I've got a mission with them). And I had a mission in Perez Park to kill some Circle of Thorns members... Everything there except for the Circle of Thorns themselves was practically either red or purple.

::bows to FZ::

YES! It's awesome. My fave enimies to stomp are the Clockwork... I've helped beat down at least two of their Monsters (some villian groups have "Monsters", which are like the random uber-baddies.... you generally get a badge for beating them) And the level Boss names are almost as good as the Freakshow... which you won;t run into for a while yet.

Just for reference, the fastest travel power once you get it pumped is Teleport. I myself prefer flight, but it is a bit slow :P

The character I'm working on now will have SuperJump..

edit------> Oooh! I'm on Infinity too!
Yeah, I LOVE this game. The Hollows, I will warn you, WILL kick your ass until you get a travel power... around 14... which sadly is also when it stops being great for leveling...

Everytime I build another character, I forget how much a pain getting around the Hollows is early on. ANd in regards to the Circle of Thorns: Beware the Madness Mages.... I FUCKING hate them :P

Oh, I've been battling the Clockwork recently. Got a badge for stopping a gang war between the Clockwork and the Skulls, even. They win the award for "Most unexpected tough fights". My first encounter with them made me say, "What are these... Damn, these things are tiny. Are these the Clockwork? I thought they were bigger..." Those little bastards almost killed me! And the missions I had against them were hard! Who knew something one-tenth your size could be so nasty...

My current missions will have me going up against The Lost. I haven't encountered them before, and I read up on their history, so I'm hoping they're not as nasty as the Clockwork...

And I'm looking at getting both Flight and Super Speed eventually (I want Hover for it's bonuses to Blasters, and Flight is recommended for finding the Circle of Thorns, since I have a Magic background. And I want Hasten and Whirlwind from the Super Speed catagories, so getting Super Speed itself will let me get both those).

EDIT: I've been focusing more on beating missions then levelling so far, but I'm going to have to start sometime. I'm already having to sneak to my mission points because the enemies on the way there are WAY out of my league usually... So, Hollows is good for levelling. I'll remember that, I'm going back there once I hit level 8. I can't remember if it's an Enhancement level, or a Power level...

And I saw Madness Mages in Perez Park, but since they were in the purple, AND a Boss, I just ran, I didn't even bother fighting them...

You're on Infinity? Hmm... what level are you up to, FZ? Although, with exemplaring and sidekicking, it hardly seems to matter for playing with friends. I've got a natural Tanker who I THINK is on Infinity, by the name of Monterey Jack. He's right around level 6 or 7, I think. Global name is Benjamin Blake, but since I don't understand the message system at ALL, that might not get through... <_<

I haven't had to use the messaging system so far really. I'll be tinkering with that next time I get on today (It's only a 14 day trial, so I'm trying to cram as much gameplay in as possible) so I'll try and send off mesages later today. I'm currently level 7, Magic Blaster with Fire Blast and Fire Manipulation as my powers, but I'm right on the edge of hitting level 8.

Urge to buy CoH, rising! Dang thing probably cost the same as WoW per month.
When I'm bored, I like to wander around and cast X-Zone on random things.

I personally prefer WoW, and CoH DOES feel rather repetitive to me, despite FZ's feelings otherwise. The world just seems... flat, somehow. ... but then, it IS supposed to echo a comic-book, right? :P

One of the things I hate about MMORPGs is that you can't test out powers at different levels before you get them.

You can't do that in any game, Ou.

Well, WoW just looks like any other MMOG to me, only shinier. If it has a free trial somewhere, I'll give it a shot, but I doubt it could convince me otherwise. I've played Standard MMOGs before, they're about as fun as doing homework. CoH however simply removes the frustrating elements, letting you jump straight to the fun stuff.

Especially since now I can fly! Woooooooooo!

Or, at least, I can hover, which is only one step away from flight...

Beat the main game of Kirby Canvas Curse.

Man, that last boss is one tough cookie.

beat it 5 times over so now I have over 80% completion. Just gotta do the mini games, time challenges, and the last line challenge and I'm done.

Edit: try tapping the face while it teleports, makes it easier, watch everyone miss this edit 'cuz its page'd

Pfft. Flight is over rated, fun though.

Super speed and/or jump is the travel power.
