Another article.

RM, both articles claim that the wand is very responsive, so that is sort of, you know, the opposite of your post's claim that DVD remotes are slow to respond, and that's why the wand sucks.

I'm not saying that you didn't read the article, just that it MAY seem like that to SOME.

EDIT: And the second article mentions that if you relax, the wand functions better... that's mentioned during the Metroid Prime 2 demo.

holding it straight out, would be a problem, yes, but maybe it's time for a controller that forces you to do something different after an hour rather than sitting in front of the tv all day.

I don't remember who said this, but someone once said this to me:

"You know why, when you think of an orchestra, and you think of the conductor, you always visualize a little old man? Well, it's because standing there, waving a baton in the air, is damn good aerobic exercise. Conductors live a LONG time."

Now imagine the typical gamer, or, hell, yourself, conducting an orchestra.

Either we'll get long-lived gamers, or a lot of heart attacks...

See? It also addresses the alleged obesity epidemic in this country! Japan is so thoughtful!

Bad analogy to use with a bunch of people who have never tried holding their arms up for extended periods of time...

Conducting is HARD. And it won't cause people to lose weight, it'll cause people to hate the method of control. I can see it working well in light-sword type games if you can put it down between battles, but for much else... bah.

I was thinking back on the fact that they said that they used both hands in order to keep it steady at one point, and I just imagined a starwars game with this controller.

EDIT: actually, I once held my arm straight out with a pebble in my hand and tried to keep it there.

if your hand doesn't move, it starts feeling very heavy

Since I know some of you will try it, a word of advice: Don't lock your elbow. No matter how tempting it is, don't lock your elbow. Always hold your arm slightly bent. Which means no putting the system on top of the TV. :P

edit: That was probably part of your problem, newb. The thing is, when you aren't holding your arm down, the blood has to pump UP, against gravity, which causes strain and lessens oxygen flow to the muscles there, which causes cramping.

ohhhh, yeah.

you lock your elbow and your arm just swings right down in basically no time at all.

also, continue moving, don't hold it still for more than a minute

Note: For a MUCH better insight into how this will work, there is a link in the first link posted by Vee, that has a Video of the controller in action. Before anyone comments, I suggest seeing it.

After having seen it, my judgement is as follows: It's a neat concept, but a horrible idea. It would be great for a bunch of secondary/specialized games just for the remote, but the large majority of games will only suffer using this system.

Imagine a game where you can swordfight, using the remote, and it's trasnferred realistically into the game. Imagine a Link game where YOU control the sword. That would be Awsome!

Imagine a Shooter Game where you can move your own character using the joystick, and shoot using the controller. Instead of being on rails, it would sort of be FPS-ish. That could be neat.

Now, imagine playing Mario with this. I rest my case.

This controller will be good at doing certain things the other systems can never achieve. However, there are far too many games that it will never, ever be good at because of the fundamental nature of how it works. At best, like the past couple of systems have been, it'll be good for a few games here and there, and it'll suck at everything else.

In fact, not locking your joints in general is just good sense.

Especially if you're a rather robust woman on the tier aove the tenors and decide to pass out on the guy underneath you with no warning.
No fanfare, no special effects... Just Jon

I still think it will work for most things... and I now can see how it will be able to play the classics... Also I am a FPS fan.... This reeks of coolness for me.

I've already figured out a way to cheat. tape a laser pointer to the top of it. now you'll be able to see exactly what your shooting.

It's how I got so high a level in duck hunt 8 years ago.

How the fuck am I gonna play Smash Brothers with THAT?!?

I hope to God the Revolution comes packed with one of those "controller shells".

Also, Kingdom Hearts 2 Japanese released date; December 22.

Actually, I can see plaing Mario with that. Use the joystick to move Mario, and use the wand to press the right triggers. Then, when Mario is swimming, or has his wing cap, or whatever he'll use to fly, use the wand to control him.

It'd be awesome. What you people are missing is that the wand doesn't have to be used ALL THE DAMN TIME in a game to be useful. It could be for certain parts.

Oh, and according to the articles, the Metroid Prime 2 demo utilized the wand as FZ suggested. Which has only AWESOME implications for MP3.

As for SSBR... um... I'm lost. Maybe you could use the wand to decide whether your character is ducking or jumping?

Just give me the option to use a traditional controller damnit. The SNES pad is a fine design.

bah what am I saying. I won't get it anyways, its been forever since nintendo's had a decent RPG. Ah well. guess I'll just stick with my DS. Maybe a gamecube to play the new pokemon game and the new castlevania games.

>PSST!<

Turning the wand on it's side makes it a more traditional controller. Some games are going to use it for that. And the NES part of the Virtual Console WILL utilize it.

How to use it for Smash Bros.? Simple.
Just hold the "Remote" in your main hand, and the "Hammer" bit in your off.
The A and B buttons on the remote still function the same, one Z trigger on the Hammer can be used for shielding, maybe the other for jumping.

Like someone said above, there's no need to use the motion sensing function for everything.

Notty, are you OK? Sounds like you're coming down with something.

I don't see the problem. There are three types of games:

Third-party cross-platform games. You know, games for the 360, the PS3, and the Revo. Since the other next-gen controllers are so much like their immediate predecessors, they can use the Gamecube controllers, which hook up to the Revo. Also, since they are using the standard discs, instead of the Gamecube discs, this actually encourages more cross-platform games. (MGS4, pleasepleaseplease!)

Third-party Revo exclusives. See, if a third party wants to make a game utilizing the wand, they CAN. And until Microsoft and Sony steal the wand concept, these games MUST be Revo-exclusive. Can you... can you imagine Warcraft? Use the joystick to move the camera across the map. Use the wand to conduct your troops! Can you imagine RPGs? Use the joystick to move around, but use the wand to select battle commands, or hit the right motion for spells, or other "special" actions. Or what about platformers... sick of the crummy camera angles plaguing most platformers? Use the wand as the camera! Imagine... a Megaman FPS... use the Joystick to move, the wand to point... and the D-Pad to cycle through weapons...

First party games. Nintendo's bullion. It's pride and joy. Imagine, not just using the wand for the sword in Zelda, but as the Wind Waker, too. Imagine Metroid Prime 3. Imagine Mario 128, as I described above with the wing cap. Imagine StarFox. (EDIT: Imagine Kid Icarus. He FLIES!) Nintendo will make it work, and other companies will see it, and want to make their own Revo-exclusives.

I can see it working. And Mordain, Nintendo DID say that they were trying to make more games that you could pick up and play for ten minutes or so. Not giant games that take an hour to find a savepoint... you get tired, you put it down. And then you decide whether or not, even with your "exhaustion," you had FUN.
