Why would they need permission...

Because the other companies own the games, not Nintendo...

Because otherwise it would be theft. Nintendo would be making a profit on those games without the permission of the games creators, selling the games as their own and making 100% profit, where as before there were licensing deals so that the people that made the game get most of it, and Nintendo really is just getting a cut of the sales.

Eherm. I meant why would those companies need permission to make their games compatable?

The other companies probably could make their games available, but the question would be if they would WANT to...

One final stab at this :P

The year is 1995, Nintnedo is top dog among the consoles. Why would a cartridge making company need permission from Nintendo to make a cartridge that works with the SNES?

Because at that time, each and every game needed the Nintendo Seal of Approval. It was a control thing.

Ahhh, because then the companies would be profitting off Nintendo's hard work! Nintendo owns the console, and has all sorts of software and hardware on it so only certain games are compatible. You need to get that compatibility software from Nintendo so that your game will run off of it. They have the patent to that console and the systems that allow compatibility with it, so if you make something work without their permission, you're basically stealing their work. It's really a sort of symbiotic relationship...

EDIT: Baroned, but it still works.

But... if that software were reverse engineered (like it was for PCs, I think Whiteroomed is term) then how is that stealing their work?

I'm fairly certain reverse-engineering a program is really, really illegal...

Not if you do it right. If you just reverse engineer it then use that data it's illegal. Bt if you have two groups of coders, one to break the code down then write down everything it does, then another to use those notes and write code from scratch, then it is legal.

At least according to the History Channel rise of MS show I saw.

I don't think that the Revo will have as many add-ons as Scott thinks.

Joystick. Comes with the controller, last I checked. The rest you have to buy separately, I think...

Standard Controller Shell. About the only one I'd purchase. And really, were I Nintendo, the wands would come with the shells. But I'm sure Mr. Potatomoto would disagree.

SNES Controller Shell. Not NECESSARY, but kinda cool.
N64 Controller Shell. Also unnecessary.
NES Controller Shell. TOTALLY unnecessary, and highly unlikely, since the wand AND the controller shell will both suffice as NES controllers.

Bongos Shell. The bongos were sold WITH the DK bongo games, so... I think the shell would come with the bongo games.
Dancepad Shell. Usually sold WITH DDR.
Microphone. PLEASE. The GCN Mic that came with Mario Party 6 will work with the Revo.

The only thing I am curious about is whether or not the Revo will have a platform to attach my Gameboy Player to.

It may have been legal then, when it was still the Rise of Computers and laws and rules were still being formulated on how all this work and what is and isn't legal (Hell, they are STILL figuring out what is and isn't legal when it comes to computers), but I'm not so sure about now.

Maybe that IS a legal process for some things, although with the era of patenting Game Engines (Things like Source for HL2, or the Unreal Engine for Unreal, meaning they own the very code you would be using to create entirely new games with those capabilities, and you have to buy that code from them to make a game with that engine), I doubt it. I'm fairly certain Nintendo has patents on the code itself, meaning if it is compatible to the NES, and doesn't have a contract with them, it's probably illegal.

EDIT: If nothing else, the group that breaks down the code in the first place would at least be doing something highly illegal. The second group might be safe though...

Game companies liscense the source code because graphics engines are REALLY freaking hard to write from scratch, not because writing their own might infringe on someone else's engine.

I figured that's where RM had gotten it from...

actually the nintendo vibrator comparison came from 4chan.

to be honest, I don't know what to think of it. I find myself not being very enthused by the controller, but I like the revolution in general, so I guess I'm neutral.

Nintendo couldn't stop the game genie, and it is compatable with their consoles. But they owned the right to every cartridge they build, that's what proprietary hardware is. Ultima for Gameboy is probably still legal, too.

If Nintendo just includes the emulator and a rom or two on the Revolution, it won't be long untill someone else finds a way to get other ROMs on there. I mean, all the other N64 emulators suck big time, with bad sprites, slowdown, and STUFF. Other companies would be missing out if they don't take money for the legal alternative.
Hey, the comic seems to be updating kind of regularly. Maybe we should vote to spread the word.

MGS4: Nowhere to Hide

PS3 exclusive? Well, hopefully we'll see MGS4: Sub for the Revo, too...

(Sub= Substance/Subsistance-like expansion.)

Ha ha, good luck on getting it on the revolution! Just like you got MGS 2 and 3 on the Gamecube...

It looks good, but really, he's getting pretty old... However, I'm REALLY looking forward too it. 2 unveiled the Patriots, 3 told us who they were and what happened to them, but 4 is really going to solve some of the mysteries 2 left behind, hopefully...
