I just played a Risk game with the WORST newblet in the history of Risk. Not only was every decition he made terrible, but he was so awful at heeding our advice I'm convinced he had cum in his ears. He seriously played the game to lose, he could not have played worse if he tried. |

I'm nearing the end of X-Men Legends II. >.> Also known as "Baldur's Gate with X-Men characters". Review will be posted as soon as I'm finished. ~_~ I would've been done already, but the damned electricity cutting out kinda killed that. |

Ookay, here we go. This week I rented X-Men Legends 2: Rise of Apocalypse. I'm honestly not sure, before I begin, what I'll give it. Usually I have a pretty good idea, either I really liked it or I really hated it, but in this case, I don't know. So, let's start 'er up and see what we get. PLOT - 1 Banana The plot was okay, but inadequately explained. It doesn't require knowledge of the first game in order to understand, but knowledge of X-Men continuity is strongly enforced. You will encounter many new characters that don't actually explain themselves in any way. You will run into a big, tough guy called Grizzly who many of you will probably have never even heard of, the characters will speak to him with knowledge you don't have, and you'll find yourself waiting for some explanation of who this guy is, an explanation that never comes. You simply run into him, he snarls at you, the characters prove they know him better than you do, you fight him, and then he's gone and you never hear from him again. The main plot is pretty good if you understand what's going on. Unfortunately, it feels a little rushed. This is probably due to the fact that, as stated before, they never really explain anything. I am not a hardcore X-Men fanatic. I find them interesting so I picked the game up. I would have appreciated a little information as to who about 60% of the characters in the game are, because I've never heard of them before. The game kicks off with everyone upset over the kidnapping of an X-Men whose name I never heard before I played the game, so it really was hard to get that emotional grab. Once you stop trying to care about the characters and just focus on the big apocalypse plan by the aptly named Apocalypse, then you start to enjoy the story. I made the fool's mistake of trying to care about the characters in an RPG. Don't make the same mistake. It really is a good story. All you have to do is close your ears to the characters. GAME CONTROL - 1.5 Bananas The controls were pretty good, and nicely responsive. There were two major aspects of the controls: combat and mutant abilities. Combat was fairly simple. One button for a fast attack, one button for a powerful attack, and you could make combos by alternating between these. The only problem was it became fairly boring. There was no customization and nothing beyond the basic combos that every character had. Fast, Fast, Power was an uppercut attack for EVERYONE, for example. The melee combos became boring as quickly as they were learned. They were simple, they were easy to do, and this is a plus. But after a while, you just grew tired of them. Which is where Mutant Powers come into play. You can map three Mutant Powers, and one really powerful one, into the controls. You hold a button down and it brings up the little miniscreen to show you what button is to which power, and you hit the button to activate your powers. These were far more interesting than the basic fighting. Playing as Magneto, I spent more time hanging back while the three AI drones beat up on the enemy, and just hit them with my Mutant abilities. Much better than melee. Also, some mutants had a special movement power. Nightcrawler could teleport, many mutants could fly, etc. This was activated by pressing the jump button in midair. My only beef with these was flight. You can rise or descend while flying, but both are at a gradual pace. I felt there should be a way to deactivate flight in midair, because not only would it be cool to drop straight down into the enemy units, and then unleash a nastily powerful Mutant ability, but because descending takes too long, and one hit will send your character reeling to the ground and waste time getting up. So, overall, the controls were good, the controls were solid...but one thing about them really pissed me off once I noticed it, but this is not the place. It concerns both the controls and the basic design, and I will address it under Game Design. GAME DESIGN - 0.5 Bananas For the most part, the game was designed pretty well. It was an RPG, so of course it would have its equipment and shops and side quests and...wait, what was that? You said something about side quests? Oh, I'm sorry. There are no side quests. The game is completely linear, from start to finish. There is maybe ONE side quest in the entire game, and there is almost NOTHING in the way of additional areas to explore. You can play past the ending, but why bother? There is nothing new to find. That being said, there are a few pick-me-ups that can be found, but they are bothersomely easy to locate. Discs for the Danger Room, which is a stupid concept to me, but I'll touch on that later...comics, sketches, and other assorted things can be found very easily in the levels. Almost too easily, in my opinion. You can also find Homing Beacons which, if you find all four in each of the five Acts, allow you to unlock a secret character. Now, on to the fine print. The Danger Room...this was an innately bad idea, both in concept and in execution. I understand the purpose, to help teach new players how to play the game and to help hone one's skills, but first of all, I was of the understanding that the Danger Room was a room, not a single computer that magically uploads you into some weird VR space. That or teleports you someplace, they never really explain it. In order to unlock new lessons in the Danger Room, you have to find discs for it. Charles must REALLY care a lot about security, considering the discs containing lessons for his Danger Room are scattered around the Savage Land, the island of Genosha, the city of New York...he's really serious about locking up that magic computer of his. The game allows for four players at once, or fewer players with AI drones. The drones are deeply stupid, however. You can "customize" their AI, but all you can actually do with that is tell them "Attack things when you see them" or "Attack things when I see them". The AI mostly makes for just generic meat shields. The EXP and leveling system is fairly solid. You get one Skill Point with every level, and you can use them to increase your Mutant Powers. Some are attacks, others are "Boosts" which enhance the character's abilities temporarily, and yet others are "Passive", which are always in effect. Useful, useful, although I never once used a Boost ability. Didn't care for them, and the attacks are more important. You just don't get enough Skill Points to care about Boosts. The boss fights are absurdly easy, though. That is a problem. Just bash at it until it's dead, then move on. Perhaps it's the fact that I am not a hack n' slash fan and am accustomed to more trying boss fights, but these just struck me as boring. Even the final boss went down easy. But what is it that really costs this game? Why do I dislike the design so much, what pushes my buttons? The fact that they didn't design an X-Men game. This game is, and I don't mean similar to, this game IS Baldur's Gate, with X-Men characters thrown into it. The controls are exactly the same, the concepts are exactly the same, the game is exactly the same. Now, what's really bad about this? The X-Men have no place in Baldur's Gate. You know what this ungodly fusion gives you? -Shops and money. You must now purchase equipment from members of the X-Men, who by all rights should be supplying their allies for free, considering they are a part of the team and it is THEIR JOB to make these things. -Magic Potions and Health Potions. HELL NO. Not in an X-Men game! -The Recall Potion has been replaced by Blink's Portals. It's exactly the same but you don't have to pay for it. That's...okay, but it leaves the plot hole of why Blink doesn't just open a portal straight to where you need to be, considering, and I quote, "I can go as far as the moon and back". -Enchanted armor. You have your basic armor, and then you have enchanted armor that boosts your abilities and grants things like "radiation" (read: Poison) damage to your attacks. Magic armor...how very X-Men of you.... The controls, the style, everything so far as the boss's HP meter down below, it all comes straight from Baldur's Gate. And that's why they get such a low rating in this area. They put the X-Men into a game they had no place in. For shame, Activision. For shame. GRAPHICS/SOUND - 2 Bananas What can I say? There was nothing to complain about in this department. The graphics were done very nicely, and the poster images for the loading screens are fun to look at, even though they are fairly repetitive after Act 2 or 3, since you've pretty much seen them all by then, save for special Boss or New Area posters. The music is beautiful, I'm listening to it right now as I type this, the sound effects are very well done, and the voice acting isn't bad. Bear in mind, however, I'm not picky about graphics or sound, though, so this is an easy category to get full points in. REPLAYABILITY - 1 Banana The multiple characters gives you a different experience each time you play through the game, and that can be very enjoyable. However, aside from the different characters, there's not much to add to the replayability factor in this game. Like I said, the side quests are very few, and the collectibles are easy to find. After you're done, there's not much to do, and going back through the game over and over again with different characters is only fun if you can stomach going through it again and again. OVERALL - 6 Bananas If you're looking for a fun and innovative new game the likes of which have never been seen before...then move on. But if you're looking for a strange little romp through a magical version of X-Men, this is what you want. The story won't deny you so long as you are a hardcore fan of the X-Men, and the controls are fairly easy to learn. It does make for a fun rental, but I would not suggest a purchase. Not unless you are a very hardcore fan of X-Men...or a very hardcore fan of Baldur's Gate. |

I mean, if I wanted to play Baldur's Gate, I'd be playing Baldur's Gate. I wanted to play X-Men. Somehow, I don't believe X-Men should involve magic potions or enchanted armor, or any of the other BG crap that found its way in. |
