I maintain that FFX-2 would have been a good game if they had just removed the music, storyline, most of the characters...

...

Okay, pretty much everything but the battle engine, really.

In the meantime, I'll buy the portable FF remakes, and Kingdom Hearts II, of course, but FFXII...from the looks of it, they'll have to pay ME to play it....

Ironically enough, the battle engine was the only thing I really detested.

...huh.

Aside from the dress-sphere thing (which probably could have been fine, if they hadn't turned into a Sailor Moon rip-off) I loved the incredably fast-paced battle system. It rewarded you for good timing, and in some of the harder battles (Well, as long as you didn't Cat Nip+Trigger Happy spam your way through, anyway) made you think about the moves you made and the effect it had on the characters ATB bar....

The timing part would matter more if it affected anything other than Trigger Happy and Attack. Every other move is turn-based, and frankly, neither of those is good enough to waste a turn on. So I never noticed anything either fast-paced or timed about it, as everyone just performed their move by turn.

But what really got me was the Dresspheres. I praised Final Fantasy X for returning to the "individual people" concept, wherein every fighter has their own talents, their own knacks, to correspond with their own history. Every person has specific things that they've trained for, that they can do. The trained warrior, the experienced swordsman, the black mage, the summoner, etc. A party consisting entirely of actual people with their own talents, rather than a group of interchangeable robots.

X-2 was a return to the interchangeable robots I have long scorned.

That's fair, though it's to be expected with only three characters. Which, I suppose, is another complaint I had with the game.

And there's a good few seconds in which you have to use charge up moves, so it's entirely possible to use non-standard attacks/Trigger Happy in a combo...

No, it's not. Even when you time them right, the characters still take their turns. Even if they reach the end at the same time, Paine will finish casting Firaga before Rikku even starts using Beast Hunter, or whatever combo you're attempting.

Excalibur was one of maybe three moves that were actually fast enough without the "stand there doing crap" to actually hit before the number faded from the last, I will give you that.

Wha?

FFX was a step AWAY. IX was the step all the way back, X was a step closer to that which you hate with the key thinggys that let you use other people's sections of the grid. X-2 was a natural continuation of the redegeneration process.

I liked Final Fantasy X-2... but I know I'm all alone on that front.
There used to be an image here telling you to vote, but then Photobucket, the image site made to allow you to do third party hosting, no longer allows third party hosting without throwing a shitload of money at them... and I can barely afford to eat. So no you get some text of me bitching about it, yaaay! Also, go vote.

You are never alone in this world. Unless you happen to like FFX-2.

I thought FFX got the battle system absolutly PERFECT!!!!!!!!!! To the point where the only flaw I found when I played Xenosaga afterwards was it did not have the FFX battle system (I know Xeno came out first)

Well, all I know is FFX-2 is in the Greatest Hits, meaning it sold a fuckload of copies. Square is going to look at that and say "Hey, let's do more of the same because it sells, and theat means more money for us." Buying a game just because it's made by a company which has produced a few good video games is not how you tell them their current line of games sucks. If you really want to make them realize it, rent it before you buy it.

Personally, I have rather unrefined tastes for games (which is probably obvious, by my statement above), so I don't really have a problem. But for those of you who seem to be a bit more... discerning, need to be careful with what they buy. And if you can't rent for whatever reason, then return games you don't like. You can probably get store credit at the very least, and then you can try for another. But getting a game everyone says sucks and then leaving it on your shelf, still wrapped up and everything is not going to make the company change their mind.

That's just my two cents. One nice thing about the world is everyone is allowed to have their own opinions and do what they please (to an extent). And of course, if you already follow what I said up there, then it wasn't really directed at you.

I might have liked it if they had put a little more testosterone into it...

EDIT: Also, I bought X-2 (or rather, kept X-2) for collection purposes.
