Um... Echoes reveals that the pirates have off world bases. Just destroying their home planet isn't enough to declare that the pirates as a whole have been destroyed. As for the revenge thing... um... far be it for me to dictate plot points to you.

Edit: Heck most of the games take place off the pirates home world.

If you're talking about the fanwanked "Samus's home was destroyed by Space Pirates when she was a little girl", as far as I am aware this was never canon.

I can neither verify or discount that plotpoint, so I'm benching that question.

Edit: Speculating on it, I think that plotpoint came from the comic series that was run in Nintendo Power. It may or may not be supported by the in game plot, we'd have to check instruction booklets and stuff to determine.

It's hard to see past the common perception and remember that just because a lot of people think it's true, doesn't mean it's canon. For example, many people believe that Mario and Luigi are plumbers from New York or Brooklyn or wherever.

Its not that, I just wasn't going to dismiss it as non-canon so easily. This falls under "you can't prove a negative" rule. The methods for testing if something doesn't exist involve isolating it, which in this case would mean collecting all Metroid canon and then determining it nowhere to be found withing the canon, something I'm not particularly prepared to do at this late hour.

Edit: Still, I'm confident that I've found the true origin of the storyline and satisfied the conclusion that it is indeed non-canon.

I think that was covered in a few research and lore logs in MP1. I'll have to check though.

In the year 2000 of history of the cosmos, representatives from the many different planets in the galaxy established a congress called the Galactic Federation, and an age of prosperity began. A successful exchange of cultures and civilization results and thousands of interstellar spaceships ferried back and forth between planets. But space pirates also appeared to attack the spaceships.

The Federation Bureau created the Galactic Federation Police, but the pirates' attacks were powerful and it was not easy to catch them in the vastness of space. The Federation Bureau and the Federation Police called together warriors known for their great courage and sent them to do battle with the pirates. These great warriors were called "space hunters." They received large rewards when they captured pirates, and made their living as space bounty hunters.

It is now year 20X5 of the history of the cosmos, and something terrible has happened. Space pirates have attacked a deep-space research spaceship and seized a capsule containing an unknown life-form that had just been discovered on Planet SR388. This life-form is in a state of suspended animation, but can be reactivated and will multiply when exposed to beta rays for 24 hours. It is suspected that the entire civilization of Planet SR388 was destroyed by some unknown person or thing, and there is a strong possibility that the life-form just discovered was the cause of the planet's destruction. To carelessly let it multiply would be extremely dangerous. The Federation researchers had named it "Metroid" and were bringing it back to Earth - when it was stolen by space pirates!

If Metroid is multiplied by the space pirates and then used as a weapon, the entire galactic civilization will be destroyed. After a desperate search, the Federation Police have at last found the pirates' headquarters, the fortress planet Zebes, and launched a general attack. But the pirates' resistance is strong, and the Police have been unable to take the planet. Meanwhile, in a room hidden deep within the center of the fortress, the preparations for multiplying the Metroid are progressing steadily. As a last resort, the Federation Police have decided on this strategy: to send a space hunter to penetrate the center of the fortress and destroy the Mother Brain. The space hunter chosen for this mission is Samus Aran. He is the greatest of all the space hunters and has completed numerous missions that everybody thought were absolutely impossible. He is a cyborg: his entire body has been surgically strengthened with robotics, giving him superpowers. Even the space pirates fear his space suit, which can absorb any enemy's power. But his true form is shrouded in mystery.

The planet Zebes is a natural fortress. Its sides are covered with special kind of stone, and its interior is a complicated maze. On top of that, the pirates have planted devices and booby traps in the maze, and the pirates' eery followers lie in wait around every corner. Samus has now succeeded in penatrazing Zebes. But time is running out. Will he be able to destroy the Metroid and save the galaxy?

Taken from the manual of Metroid, for NES. >.> I think they call her a "he" because it was supposed to be a surprise, as suggested by "his true form is shrouded in mystery". Nobody knew it was a 'she' at the time, and apparently she doesn't care enough to correct them.

But anyways...she didn't go to Zebes for revenge, or on her own. She was arbitrarily chosen to go down to the planet's surface and wage war. No mention, not even a suggestion of revenge, is ever given.

I'm pretty sure the space pirates reference "The Hunter's" single minded hatred of them in echoes too, come to think of it.

She's a bounty hunter. She got paid to do it. Just because it was her job doesn't mean she didn't like it.

Of course she liked it. She's a bounty hunter. You don't become a successful bounty hunter by being queesy about the job. The best are those that enjoy it.

And that is one of many reasons why it's really hard to build more to her character without diminishing her. She's a hardcore bounty hunter.

I'm merely saying the two motivations arn't mutually exclusive. She CAN be a bounty hunter who works for the federation AND have an unnatural hatred for pirates which lead to her working for the federation killing pirates.

But yeah, we've tangented.

In Metroid Prime, there certainly was reference made in Chozo Lore to the Chozo finding the Hatchling after a Pirate attack.

As for a romantic subplot involving ADAM, I just don't see it!

Really? I could have sworn that it was referenced in Fusion...

I think he means in terms of Samus actually needing a romantic subplot. Or, if he doesn't, I DO.

Ahh. Alright, that I can see. It's certainly not necissary in the least. But as it was only really mentioned in passing in a flashback, I don't see it detracting much, if any from the game.

Samus needs a romantic subplot like the chozos need to be allegoried to angels...
oh wait....!
Mrs. Limburger : Crashing, and banging, all kinds of weird noises. Howling, moaning, frightful grunting, things falling out of closets, all over the place!

Peter : Sounds like my weekend.

No, Samus just liked Malkovich because he respected her, and always asked her if her orders were OK, and always called her Lady without being sarcastic... I don't remember anything about them being more than commander/soldier.

I'm almost positive they've referenced that in an instruction book.

I like the theory they were born in the Mushroom Kingdom, but sent to Brookyln at a young age to protect them from the Koopas.

...before we realized that they were incompotent.
