I like the theory they were born in the Mushroom Kingdom, but sent to Brookyln at a young age to protect them from the Koopas.

...before we realized that they were incompotent.

yet he keeps managing to actually kidnapp the princess and get 8 worlds between himself and mario
Malia Weinhagen talking about her father Dave Arneson

"The biggest thing about my dad's world is he wanted people to have fun in life," Weinhagen said. "I think we get distracted by the everyday things you have to do in life and we forget to enjoy life and have fun.

"But my dad never did," she said. "He just wanted people to have fun."

Super Mario Bros. manual

"One day the kingdom of the peaceful mushroom people was invaded by the Koopaa tribe of turtles famous for their black magic. The quiet, peace-loving Mushroom People were turned into mere stones, bricks and even field horse-hair plants, and the Mushroom Kingdom fell into ruin.

The only one who can undo the magic spell on the Mushroom People and return them to their normal selves is the Princess Toadstool, the daughter of the Mushroom King. Unfortunately, she is presently in the hands of the great Koopa turtle king.

Mario, the hero of this story (maybe) hears about the Mushroom People's plight and sets out on a quest to free the Mushroom Princess from the evil Koopa and restore the fallen kingdom of the Mushroom People.

You are Mario! It's up to you to save the Mushroom People from the black magic of the Koopa!"

No mention of them coming from another world, and the general feeling, that Mario just heard about it and set out to help the people, suggests he's a denizen of their world.

That's what the first arcade Mario Bros. is about.

Mario and Luigi, plumbers, stumble upon the Warp Zone to the Mushroom Kingdom deep beneath the city. That's where all the koopas and clawgrips were coming from.

That's how I always thought of it though. :^_^:

Also, take into consideration the fact that, according to Yoshi's Island, they were born in the Mushroom World. >.> Unless we have Yoshis in our world.

Like I said, taken out of the Mushroom Kingdom at a young age, but destined to return!

Little shock to the denizens of the Mushroom Kingdom, expecting a mighty warrior and getting a fat, greasy plumber.

Considering that the stork was delivering them to their parents, and that route required him to be in Mushroom World, that suggests the parents are also in Mushroom World. Unless he just likes taking unnecessary scenic tours in dangerous lands.

I'm basing all this on a write-up someone did in an attempt to bring continuity to the Mario series.

Basically yes, BORN in the Mushroom Kingdom and delivered to parents in the Mushroom Kingdom, but moved to the real world LATER.

The Mario series has plenty of continuity. With the exception of the edutainment games, Mario is Missing and Mario's Time Machine, I can't recall the Mario Bros. having any adventures in the real world. And those, they only got there via Bowser traveling there. So why does it even need to be involved in their continuity?

The only reference I'm aware of for plumbers from Brooklyn is the Super Mario Bros. live action movie. But I don't think Bowser's a Tyrannosaurus Rex either.

They went to Brooklyn several times in the Mario 3 cartoons. I also recall a couple of episodes in the original Super Show where they're trying to get back to Brooklyn.

The cartoons are about as canon as the live action movie.

EDIT: See MegaMan cartoon for reference of my point.

Intrestingly enough, the Mario cartoon is where just about all the characterization for Luigi actually comes from.

Canon material may borrow ideas from less-canon sources. That doesn't mean the entire source is canon. Just that they had an idea.

For example, the characterization of Luigi may come from the Mario cartoon, but I have yet to see any of Link or Zelda's characterization from their own cartoon be implemented in canon.

I know. But a lot of sources seem to give Brooklyn as a point of origin. Come to think of it, the CYOA books and the comics do too (again, not really canon but yeah). I think it's just a case that a lot of people have accepted it rather than questioning it. I was confused at Yoshi's Island's ending myself whn I saw them being "born" in the Mushroom Kingdom.

EDIT: Baron'd. You people type too fast.

That's because the Brooklyn idea is an interesting one, that those who are not the game authors look at and go "Y'know, I would think that's a lot more interesting". Like giving Samus romantic interests towards Captain N in the Captain N comic. But that doesn't make it canon.

The comics, the cartoons, the movies, all of it. No matter how much people like the ideas that come from them, they will still never be anything more than highly publicized fanfiction.

Um... but it does have canonical basis. Like they said, the original game Mario Brothers takes place in the sewers under brooklyn, as part of that plumber job. The monsters Mario was fighting in Mario Bros are escapees from the Mushroom Kingdom using the same warp zone Mario and Luigi used to travel to the Mushroom Kingdom(well, I assume its the same one, but thats irrelevent). As for the who Mario World 2 thing, thats just a plot hole and has nothing to do with canon. Canon doesn't have to make sense, just look at the Megaman/X timeline.

Edit: See this is why I hate canon. Its too easily confused with a good old fashioned plot hole, and there are shades of grey as far as canonical material.

Edit2: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mario

Edit3: Anyways, I think Mario Bros takes canonical precedence over spin off Yoshi's Island. Considering how difficult it would be to fit Yoshi 64 in canon anyways, it would be much better to consider the whole Yoshi series as a parallel universe.

On the subject of the Mario-Brooklyn thing...

What about Donkey Kong? Didn't THAT take place in Brooklyn?

EDIT: Also, the X timeline gets even MORE wonky when you add Megaman Zero into the mix.

Ending of X6 anyone?

Luigi was a coward in the cartoon, too?

If I remember correctly, he was. Also, he still had a problem being overshadowed by his bro.
