If you're going to use a console controller, just play a console. It's less complicated.

I concur. And RTM, if the controller is really no longer an issue for you, what makes platformers better suited for consoles?

But if there's one XBox game I want and my computer can handle it...

Should I buy an XBox *and* the game, when I know I have no interest whatsoever in any other XBox game, or should I just buy the game for the computer and a USB controller?

And I like mods and patches, too. The XBox Morrowind annoyed me because it desperately needed to be patched, but *couldn't* be... screwed up my first character, too.

Well, the "and my computer can handle it" would be the important part there. Not everybody has top-of-the-line hardware for their PCs, yet consoles are standardized.

In that case, though, I prolly would go for the PC version, if there really weren't any other games on the console you liked...

Platformers look better on a TV then a monitor.

I'd rather use my nice computer to play Xbox games seeing as they're funner when using the PC version anyway.

Not everyone has $4K to dish out on a state-of-the-art PC.

Don't need one that expensive to play XBox games.

And I use my computer for a lot more things than I'll ever use a console for.

Mine cost like 1 thousand, and can handle anything.

Then again, it took me like, 5 months to find the parts.

The Game + Controller is always cheaper if you have a PC that can run it. Plus, controllers are useful for playing other, older games on the PC (I got a Console Controller for the single purpose of playing old console games on the PC).

For the most part, I consider the PC the superior console for pretty much anything. If you don't need to use a lot of buttons, then focus and bind only the few you need. If you need a lot of buttons, a Console can't manage that at all. If the game only needs a few buttons, but you want more (A complicated FPS for example), the PC can adapt where as the Console cannot. And for the love of all that is good and holy, don't EVER tell me that Console FPSes are better then PC ones. If it's an FPS, and it doesn't have a mouse, I'm not interested. Joysticks are inaccurate, clunky, and slow, and in an FPS you need speed and precision at the same time.

There is only one case where a game with a PC option and a Console option, the Console was superior. Indigo Prophecy. On the PC, that game looked NICE, but the Mouse and Keyboard combo for the controls was completely impossible to manage, where as on the Console the one joystick to move and the other to do things was perfect, especially as you had to make more complex motions and such later on.

Speaking of joysticks, don't forget flight sims!

I'd rather have a joystick to move my character than only four keys, or a mouse that reaches the end of its pad. Not even taking into consideration that my mouse sticks like crazy.

A sticky mouse can kill the playability of a game. But a good one isn't too expensive. I think mine cost about 20$, and it's great. Same price as a console controller, and lasts longer. Although it is cordless so when the batteries run out it's annoying.

But I'm probably a bit biased since I don't play FPS... although I will admit a fighting game would probably be unplayable on a computer.

Nowadays you can just buy a USB controller, USB arcade joystick, or console controller-to-USB adapter for crazy cheap. Fighting games are no more or less playable than on a console, because you can just use a controller regardless. My brother plays DDR on his computer using Stepmania and his hard pad connected to a USB adapter.

And as for monitor vs. screen, for console games that's true. But unless you've got an HD widescreen monitor, resolution will be at best 800x600. Of course, you could just, you know, use the S-Video out that practically every single graphics card has now.

A 600-700 dollar computer can run most any game competently, in addition to all the other cool things computers can do.

Consoles are still good, and I love the games that come out, but the truth of the matter is they're not a necessity any more. And at the rising costs -- $400 for X-Box 360?! -- I'd rather wait for a computer version.

edit: my mouse and keyboard together were 16 dollars + S+H and have lasted me 4 years no problem.

I got a really good 19 inch flatscreen LSD monitor for like, 50 bucks.

It all depends on where you get them. Computer shows are filled with people empting warehouses.

Funny you should mention the 360. I got one when it came out, but a week later decided I liked my computer more, so sold it on eBay for a tidy profit.

On the subject of USB Controllers....

RAGE. OH MY GOD SO MUCH RAGE.

I swear to got they design those things to break about two weeks after you buy them! I must have gone through a half-dozen USB because they would all break like freaking glass. Finally, I just gave up. Stupid USB Controllers...

Bah.

Personally, I prefer consoles to computers, simply because I prefer the games that come out only on consoles.

..... I've had one for the last.... 4-5 years, and its still going fine. The trick is, not to leave them plugged in all the time.

I got a Magic Box; it's a USB device that allows me to plug my Playstation 2 controller into it and use that. Works great; my brother uses it for GTA: SA. It also works with Dreamcast and Saturn controllers, but I don't have those systems. They make 'em for different controllers as well.

Why, they're just a search away! The one that I have is that $40 one (looks like it's gone up in price...), but look around there, you might be able to find a better deal...
