I liked the sphere grid as well. Hell, I liked all of Final Fantasy X and X-2. My only real lament about it was they didn't give you any luck spheres for the damn grid.
There used to be an image here telling you to vote, but then Photobucket, the image site made to allow you to do third party hosting, no longer allows third party hosting without throwing a shitload of money at them... and I can barely afford to eat. So no you get some text of me bitching about it, yaaay! Also, go vote.
Everyday I'm tumbl'n.

In my eyes, theere was no real difference between ATB and turn based. All ATB did was add a little time and give it balance, while keeping its good sides.

You're telling me that you see no difference between ACTIVE-TIME and TURN BASED?

Huh?

Active-time can be made turn-based by putting it on 'wait'. That's how I had to play FFVI, although I got over it quickly enough.

What? In ATB, how fast you made decisions mattered. In TBS, you could take as long as you damn well please.

Both had essentially the same thing, visually. THere was SOME differences in timing of attacks, but in terms of execution they were the same.
At least, compared to the Abominations. (11 that is called 12 and the MMO hiding as an FF)

I like the class system in general, I don't care how it's being done. I like the idea of character abilities reflecting their lives and who they are, rather than everyone being a machine to program how you will. It seems more realistic.

I don't care if it's leveling or sphere grid or what, I just want unique characters; probably why I actually liked Final Fantasy X's battle system. As long as we've got classes instead of materia, I'm happy.

... Visually? VISUALLY?

Visually, an African swallow is essentially the same as an American swallow, but there's a rather key difference, that being where the species make their home. The key difference between ATB and TBS is NOT visual, but the speed of the battle! In a TBS, you can sit, weight the outcomes of each move, and make an informed decision! In ATB, you're kept on your toes, because you don't want to be caught with a giant attack while you were debating which party member to revive!

Also, your language suggests that you're not discussing this rationally. Please stop that.

I know how you feel. I don't think I made any sense up there...

All the ATB was was an option, really. They never forced you to use it unless I missed a game where there wasn't a 'wait' option.

That's a good thing, though. Every choice the game gives you lets you play it a little closer to the way you want it to be. I do kind of wish there was a benefit to leaving ATB on all the time; as it is, it kind of rushed you without providing an advantage in return.

I thought the point of ATB was that it made the game difficult, because you had limited time to decide on your strategy before acting.

Besides, since when does ATB restrict you from having time to consider a plan? If you really need time, you'd be surprised how well the pause button works.

Yar. It's there for a challenge, pure and simple. Same as the existance of harder difficulty levels and optional dungeons. Hell, same as the point of the entire game, really.

... Actually, I think the ATB was put there to make it more realistic.

The RPG system is created so that you can direct multiple people in battle. If it was just one character, you'd be better off using another type of battle system, like an action-adventure game. ATB tries to make the game more realistic, by not giving you all the time in the world to consider your next move.

And if you're going to pause to think, you'd be better off setting it to "Wait" anyways.

Notty everything in that artical made me like 12 less, and thats not a joke.

Auto attack is good in MMO's since there are lots of things you are trying to focus on, personal messages other party members ect, and if you delay an action you could end up dead, which effects other people and is generally bad for the comunity feeling if you screw over your entire party because you are talking to your GF.

Offline Rpgs, The Tales, Kingdom Hearts, turn based and ATB are the best it can get. There is a reason certain things haven't really changed in the past 100 years.

Malia Weinhagen talking about her father Dave Arneson

"The biggest thing about my dad's world is he wanted people to have fun in life," Weinhagen said. "I think we get distracted by the everyday things you have to do in life and we forget to enjoy life and have fun.

"But my dad never did," she said. "He just wanted people to have fun."
