In some ways, the first PM was better. If you can somehow get hold of it, do so.

Try playing it on an emulator. Only way someone in the UK gets the chance to.

I'm being serious. I liked having Bowser, Mario and the Princess all on the same team. Plus Booster was cool.

"Your lives that I spit on now are the cartoon of a drawing by a kid who is stupid!"

Yeah, M+L was a great game. I liked how they took dodging and critical hits from SMRPG and improved on it.

And it had Hermie the Retarded Christmas Crab. That SO beat out the Bowser/Booster kiss for best Mario moment ever.

Meh. On to reviews of games... and stuff. Now that I've had ample time to sample all my Christmas presents.

First, my RPGs. The two RPGs I got for Christmas blow FF out of the water: Third Age, and Command Mission.

First up, TA. LotR, you're on a quest to find the people on the quest. Specifically, you're looking for Boromir. I guess Berethor (main character) has a bone to pick with him.

The plot is pretty original fan fiction for Middle Earth. Voice acting is wonderful... you can't even tell that Berethor (Gondorian Knight) and Boromir have the same voice, or Iridriel (Lothlorien Witch) and Arwen, or Elegost (Dunedain Ranger) and Aragorn. Hadhod (Dwarven fighter mage) and Gimli sound the same, though. And Gandalf (Sir Ian) is the narrator.

What really does it, though, is the battle system. It's turn-based, not ATB, so there's no waiting for your meter to fill up. You build your character by using skills in battle, and earning SP (for skills), and winning battles/questing for XP (for levels and stats).

Each character has two skill groups, based on their weapon and class. Berethor, for example, has Sword Craft and Leadership. Sword Craft has different attacks that do different things, like Orc Bane, which is effective against... orcs... well, THAT was redundant. Leadership raises stats for the party, or commands the party to perform actions. It's basic, and it works out well. At least, if you use skills all the time, as opposed to button mashing the attack option.

And what makes this game even better? You're warned before random battles occur. Hell, before any battle occurs. You're alerted to a random encounter by the Eye of Sauron glowing brighter as you near the monsters. You're alerted to a mandatory battle up ahead by a palantir glowing. So, one should be able to prepare for battles beforehand. Yay for innovation!

And a hint for the game. Whoever you put in the lead (one of the buttons on the map screen lets you pick) earns the quest XP. It's an easy way to level up lower leveled characters.

Next, MMXCM. Another turn-based RPG.

The plot is pretty simple so far: quell the maverick rebellion on Giga Island. Oh, and Zero's MIA, presumed dead, but I know better because it's the sixth time they've pulled that trick.

I, for one, HATE the voice actors. X sounds like he belongs in an after school special as the narrator, and Cinnamon makes me want to plug my ears with bullets. On the other hand, Zero and Spider sound decent enough.

The battle system more than makes up for it, again being the best part of the game. Instead of relying on menus, MMXCM uses all the buttons in battle, each button being a different command. And the Final Strike (with three characters, get the enemy's HP down to 75% of the remaining HP) is excellent, a way to unload a bunch of damage in one turn.

Now, here's how my last boss battle went on that game.

FINAL STRIKE! 55 Hit Combo! 15434 damage!

MFD: Oh, yeah... he's dead.

FRIEND: 15000 damage, I'd think so.

MFD: High five! High five! High--

PSYCHE: (the boss, from the TV) Now, to reveal my true form.

MFD: Five?

GAME OVER

That's why I like Third Age better. It hasn't betrayed me yet. And MMXCM doesn't have the random encounter indicator. I've gotten spoiled.

Um... movies... Punisher and Elf are good. At least worth a rental.

And books. The Dark Tower Cycle is wonderful, if you can get past the self insertion, and appreciate the book.

Nuklear Age... it's funny... the plot is interesting, and I like Atomik Lad. However, I'd wait until the second edition, if I were you. This book was murdered by the editorial process, and it shows. Seems rushed, but that's mainly because of the rampant typos. When there aren't typos, Clevinger does a good job of enveloping you in his world.

Well, that's the extended review of my Christmas presents.

I agree with MFD on most points of Third Age.

Except one. The laughable voice acting.

Honestly, there are times where I think they may have taken the voice of a character from a scene in the movie, and pasted it in a similar-looking scene in the game.

And if you can't tell that Idrial and Arwen have the EXACT same voice, well I dunno...

Everything else is great though. Fighting with the Fellowship in Helm's Deep is friggin awesome!

Hey. Liv tried to make her voice sound different. More than you can say for Hadhod/Gimli.

Notty, realize that my most recent comparison for voice acting is MMXCM. Third Age is gold, from that point of view.
