Y'know, technically, given the decline of both Nintendo (former decline, anyway) and Sega...

Wouldn't it be more proper to call Mario v. Sonic the battle of the previous millienium?

:P

Ugh there was never any real decline sure their install base was less but not to the point where we had to compare Nintendo to Sega.

Ahh, thanks.

... does it actually TELL you that anywhere in-game, or do you have to hit an FAQ to find out?

I'd say the ass-kicking that the N64 and the GC recieved by the hands of Sony and Microsoft would be a decline.

And judging by the sorry state of the Sonic franchise, well, I don't think it's really necessary to add anything, here.

EDIT: Dammit! Three minutes, people! You had THREE WHOLE MINUTES. :P

Its not hard to figure out if you keep an eye on your exp stats, I had Valor figured halfway through the game the first time, I never used wisdom though.
Malia Weinhagen talking about her father Dave Arneson

"The biggest thing about my dad's world is he wanted people to have fun in life," Weinhagen said. "I think we get distracted by the everyday things you have to do in life and we forget to enjoy life and have fun.

"But my dad never did," she said. "He just wanted people to have fun."

N64 sold over 30 million units, that's still pretty damn good. Also Microsoft did barely any ass kicking, unless selling 3 million more units is ass kicking. When I hear decline, I think of how Sega was which was no where near how Nintendo has been, making a bigger profit then EA, Sony's Game Division and Microsoft's Game Division combined.

Anyone who realistically compared Nintendo's situation to Sega's had no damn idea what they were talking about (Not saying you don't just making a general statement here)

I never saw the experience info thing. I was trying to figure out why Valor was leveling up, but none of the others were.

Profits aren't all that's involved.

Look at the last couple of years, hell, look at last year's E3! No-one, save the diehard N-fans, even thought Nintendo was going to be a player on the console stage. It was all PS3 vs 360.

And I'm not suggesting that what Nintendo went through was the same as Sega's situation, but it was still a decline.

EDIT: Well, now you know...

...And knowing is half the battle!

Except that Nintendo was the only one of those three to make a profit from their game system, as well as the only one that has a prescence outside of the game industry (referring to Playstation and X-box, not Microsoft and Sony.)

But that's stupid people you were talking about, they're the same people who thought the Real World was a good show and that Myspace is cool.

You fail to factor in all parts of the market (Don't worry, I did at first too).

Keep in mind the DS. It's currently mopping the floor with everyone else, in a big way. The PSP is a fraction of Sony's income, but the Nintendo Handhelds sell like hotcakes. They're literally stomping the PSP into irrelevance, and they sell so many of them they practically compete with Main System sales.

Like I said, profits aren't everything.

Go check the articles in gaming magizines and websites over the last couple of years.

Most people just weren't interested in Nintendo.

EDIT: This isn't to say that I still think they're in a slump. With the awesomeness of the DS and their stellar performance at this year's E3, it's fairly safe to say that Nintendo is back, in the eye of the casual gamer.

I have to disagree. People were instrested, the problem was there wasn't enough to be intrested in.

Zelda, Mario, and Pokemon games are ALWAYS looked forward to with lots of hype and expectations. Only Final fantasy seemd to match the rabid fanfare.

I don't put much stock in mags and websites, most of them seem to pander to whoever they like the most, and being older nintendo's kiddy game look turned them off.

I mean crist Xplay had advertising from both sony and microsoft during their show, thats just wrong for whats supposed to be a news and reviews type show.

It can be alot though when judging how a company is doing, Sega didn't only fall from their beloved situation because of 4 console failures but because those console failures made them lose tons of money.

If Sega was smart they would never have released the 32X or the Sega CD, then when the Saturn came out I truly believe more people would have bought it.

Halo, Madden, and GTA etc. would disagree with you there, Alan.

You guys need to face facts. There are far more "jock gamers" that play shooters, racers, and sports games out there than there are gamers that mostly enjoy RPGs and the games that Nintendo are famous for.

Any money that MS lost on the X-Box was easily made up for with titles like Halo and Halo 2.

Same with Sony and Grand Theft Auto and what not.

which also means that nintendo is working towards a specific niche in the gaming market, the people that play the kiddy type games like Mario and Pokemon, the main problem that the GC had is that they had very few RPGs which cut out alot of the same niche that they were working for.

Hell I bought a game cube nearly just to play Tales of Symphonia

I'm sure they would. They'd be wrong though. :P
While they may have some hype, there's simply not enough pure excitement generated for those type of games as their are for the Nintendo francises.

So they have to pull out their biggest games before they can even break even, is that what you're saying? That doesn't sound like that good of a buisness plan.

Actually Alan that is something of a good plan in this industry, keep the console costs as low as possible and then make the moola off the titles.

Yeah lemme submit another argument for you guys. You wanna ignore all evidence and go for the retarded kiddy market theory? Fine. I submit that the "adults" yours need the education and challenge real games can provide. Just cuz its popular doesn't mean its a good game. Frankly, what you consider adult leaves out things like strategy games and puzzle games. And don't get me started on EA Games.

Btw: my biggest problem with sports games is really the fact that the rules can't be changed. Honestly, if someone got off their fat lazy asses and made some more variations of common sports, I'd be interested in games about them.

Shooters are fine, although I'm noticing a lack of anything near balance in the gameplay mechanics-_-'.

edit: for every gameboy iteration since the NES, I've always had more game boy games than console games. I'm betting I'm not the only one.
