It's been a year. A whole damned year since I came up with the idea. Since then, a lot of ideas have been had, discarded, and brought back again.

Then my laptop needed to be reformated, and all the stuff I had was lost.

So, screw it. Let's rebuild the rules from scratch. Wasn't entirely happy with the rules I had before for the following reasons.

1: It didn't really feel like it had the spirit of the forum behind it. It felt forced.

2: People didn't seem to understand the rules.

3: The above two occured because I was the one that put most of the thought into the rules. This is a forum based card game. Why should one man define the rules?

Anyway, there are a few things you have to observe and define when creating a CCG.

The victory conditions.
Restrictions on playing the cards
Restrictions on approaching the victory condition

I have had some ideas as to the above, but...I am interested in your ideas on the matter. Also, anything you come up with should allow more than two players.

As for the program: I have decided against programming a complicated effects engine. Instead, it will simply allow you to manipulate the cards. You have to keep track of the effects yourself, and move the cards around manually.

However, before I even begin that, one burning issue remains: I don't know how to connect people online so that they can play a game against each other. I am programming this in vb.net. Anybody that can help with this, PM/IM me.

Until this issue is resolved, expect nothing from me. So don't bother me, asking to see the card game. It'll be done when it's done, and not a damn second sooner.

The pressure is why I didn't mention this before, but to be honest, I think y'all enjoy the discussion of this stuff more than you will actually playing it. And the above does relieve that a bit.

I'll post my own ideas tomorrow. Meanwhile consider the following:

All players would have an avatar and a sig. What do these do? What do these represent in game terms?
That which holds the image of an angel...

YAY!

Edit: Yes! Second post in this thread ass-URED! Now I'll actually say something quasi-useful.

It's probably not going to hurt to "borrow" *coughtotallystealcough* aspects from other card games. So:

A) There was an idea in the earlier CCG thread about health/attack being something like insanity/something-else I'll look later. I just remember I liked that idea.

B): The DBZ CCG has a system where main hero/villain starts at one point, and gets more powerful as "anger bar" reaches full, at which point the hero/villain gets its next form. I was thinking about something *similar* for our avatars; start at our first avatar and as the game progresses, give players the chance to change their avatar to something more powerful.

...however, this raises three possible problems:

1) Gives people who've been here longer an advantage (more avatars)

2) May send people into an avvy making-craze. (probably not, but...)

3) People may not like the idea of any one avatar being more powerful than another. True, avatars could also be like equipment or something, though I think that position is better filled by signatures.

Suggestion: come up with more ideas about how to use avvies, I have some but I'm having trouble finding them in my head. (Not the one that I found in the well.) My main idea was to have these be like the... "body" of the player or somethng.

Signatures:...maybe have these be like equipment. Like, different characters can have different size sigs, allowing more status effects/other abilities. (I'm thinking, the base max is five, but varies with other characters.) Or something. I will think of examples later after all this is typed out.

Coming back to the hero system in the DBZ card game... I learned what I know from the GBA game. It's... not exactly the best tutor in the world. I just did random stuff until I won, to be honest. Okay, I'm exaggerating, but I've made my point. I think there's also a support system, in which another character can help you out or something, but I never got that to work.

One last thing: Unless anyone has an origional card generator, we're probably going to be stuck using the magic card generator for this. Just a heads-up, but you probably already knew this.

More ideas from me soon, I hope!

All players would have an avatar and a sig. What do these do? What do these represent in game terms?

The Avatar would be like your Leader in the FMA Card Game. Sure, you may deploy Lesser Avatars and attack cards, but your one primary Avatar is your king. Lose it and you lose the game. Normally they might be a Back Row character (think FF games and Front/Back Row alignments) so they would be well defended, but they would tend to have very high attacks which might tempt some people to take the risk of deploying them in the front row where they can be attacked. I don't think it should be implemented exactly like that, but some sort of system where there is Benafit/Risk to putting an Avatar in danger.

Sigs would be Avatar Only bonuses that give huge benafits, but you may only have 1 sig at a time (Unless you use a special card like Garbeled Sig, may apply 2-3 Sig Cards to one Avatar, or similar). They could either be bonuses to all units (Inspiring Sig, all Avatars gain +2 attack), or penalites for the enemy (Creepy Sig, All enemy units lose 1 Attack and 1 Defense), or perhaps immunities to certain types of attacks.

Okay, let's see... since they would be seperate cards from the actual player card, they would probably enhance you in some way. Perhaps avatars would affect your stats while sigs might give you extra powers. You could probably have one card be a 'sig blocker' where you aren't affected by other player's sigs. Maybe something to destroy sigs (Typo - point out error in sig), but you can't use those if you have sig blocker active.

Dunno if that makes sense or not, but yeah.

You might want to look at the casting system in duel masters for this. It took the magic system of a color pie and made it simple to mix colors.

Then the creature system of magic so different mechanics can be implimented.

You know, for this forum, an Overpower deck or Pokemon style deck might work better than a Magic styled one.

I don't really know anything about card games, but I like the idea of a having a sanity bar and an insanity bar.

A sanity bar could be affected by negative status effects, like.... hmm...
heh. "real life" player gets a "real life" , sanity bar up.... or.... "significant other" player gets a lover, has less time on the forum, sanity up. So I guess what I'm saying is the sanity bar could measure time spent away from the forum. If it reaches full, you lose the game.

An insanity bar would work similiarly. Status effects like, "Google seppuku" player went a round of google seppuku, insanity up. Except when the insanity bar is full, you either win the game or get ridiculous bonuses...

Um, and if anyone wants cards, I can design them... but we have to decide what's going in the game first....

Here's the link to the old card thread.

Good for idea salvaging.

Also, I found it: 5th page: Madness/Willpower. Yeah, that's what I was looking for. Although... it seems to have less of a ring to it now...

I can think of one.... "Slave to the Penis" If theres one thing that drives me insane it's being a slave to my own tally-wacker.... I mean no matter how good my intentions are, the damn thing will say "DO IT, NOW" and I can do nothing but say "yes master"

It gets in the way of everything....

So what's the main theme of this deck then, discussion?
because if we have spamapult, we also have to have YOUR MOM -- a Car based effect that can also be used if you have a certain level of insanity on your meter....?
(Target takes + sanity damage)
and BECAUSE YOU TOUCH YOURSELF AT NIGHT (GJ based effect, target takes insanity damage) ?

And these would be "thread" based... as soon as we decide if we're including threads and what one would be, in game terms...

I think cards should be nonspecific. (I.E. you can slip any card into pretty much any deck. not many cards for specific characters.)

I kinda think we should rip off some yu gi oh rules. they're simple to learn, and we can already play the game online once we get a set or two together.

It's all well and good to say things like that,
but I think if we keep taking a little bit from here, a little bit from there, it'll just end up being a big mess. I think the easiest way is just to start from scratch and decide just WHAT is going to constitute game parameters...

that being said, when I say based, I mean they're BEST used by said player, but still interchangeable... just like here. :P

Sorry Red, but I gotta agree with FSB on this.

And those are some good ideas so far. Let's keep it going. And, uh...It will be easier to come up with strategies once the actual rules are formally created.

Anyway, the next thing we have to consider is: Victory conditions.
Hmm....Decking out aside, I can think of two possibilities.
1: Arbitrary variable. Once it hits 0, that player loses.
2: Card shields. Under a certain circumstance, the player loses a shield. Lose all of them, and they lose.

What think you?

Hmm, sounds reasonable, Drek. But what's a shield?
Like...counters to arguements and stuff?
I guess I can see that.

Yes Algy, but I was wondering if it was a metaphor in this case considering what the game is based on.

Metaphors are good. They helps you keep everything making some semblance of sense in your brain.

In any case, I think whatever the victory(or rather, lose) condition is should represent a players willpower.
