New ideas! Tell me what you think.

First, each player does standard stuff, like selecting their avatar and playing it face down, shuffling the decks, deciding turn order, and then drawing five cards.

When a player takes his/her turn, s/he flips over the avatar. Players may not attack a player that has not yet taken their turn.
From that point on, play goes as follows:

Draw phase: Player draws the top card of their deck and adds it to their hand. If they have no cards left in their deck, then that player wins.
Madness phase: Set your current insanity to your avatars insanity.
Summon phase: Player may summon characters from hand during this phase.
Post phase: Equip cards to your characters.

For the above two phases, whenever you play a card, decrease your current insanity level by the cards spirit. You may play cards up until the point that your insanity reaches 0 or below.
eg: If you had 3 insanity left, you can play a card with 4 willpower, but you can't play any cards after that. But doing this will cause some burn damage at the end of your turn.

Battle phase: Select one of your characters, and one of the posts equipped to it that can be activated under current conditions. Then select an opponent, and a character on his/her side of the field. The target player may now activate any set cards in play. To the activation of the first, the player may now activate any card in his hand or set on the field, and back and forth. Players pay sanity to activate these cards. If the attack is not intercepted, then the following conditions apply:

Attackers insanity > Targets willpower: Target destroyed, controller of target takes insanity - willpower damage.

Attackers insanity = Targets willpower: Target destroyed. Controller of target takes no damage.

Attackers insanity < Targets willpower: Controller of attacker takes willpower - insanity damage. Attacker is not destroyed.

Clarity phase: The player may set cards from hand into post zone. May do this so long as there is room in the post zone to set the card.

Discard phase: Discard cards from hand until you have the proper hand size.

Alternatively, we could take a different approach to battle:

Only your avatar can attack, and he can only hit your opponents avatar. Any other characters you summon only increase your main avatars stats.
When an avatar loses in battle, the weakest character on the losers field is destroyed. If the player has no characters other than his avatar, he takes damage.
We'd need to start with low life in order for this idea to work, however.

And, uh, sorry for the double post.

I like the second approach to battle myself.

Example,

"Avatar: Red LV.3 3ATK/3DEF Add 5 insanity to your insanity pool." is on the field. and I wanna summon "Google: Cost 5, Adds +3 to your Avatar's defensive stat. Add +2 to your insanity pool" I'd end up paying all the insanity I gathered that turn to summon google, but I'd get a 3/6 Avatar out of the deal and get +2 to my insanity pool next turn.

The downside being that I couldn't play any defensive cards on my opponents turn because I spent all my insanity summoning Google.

now if someone had an Avatar with 7 attack, they could ride roughshod over my avatar and make me destroy google.'

Upgrading your Avatar:
you can upgrade your avatar with a more powerfull avatar card from your Avatar deck (seperate from your Draw deck) by spending an insanity cost and by meeting a preset condition on the more powerfull avatar card.

for instance "Red Lv.5 Insanity Cost:7 6Atk/6Def Adds 7 to your insanity pool. Can only be Called if you have 3 or more equip cards total on the field or in your graveyard." I'd have to have equip cards lying about to summon him, but I would get a more powerfull avatar.

(it is kinda like DBZ but simpler, and you can adapt some of the Overpower rules to this too.)

If everybody likes the above, or we actually settle onto any other set of rules, then say and I'll write up something far more formal(read:- Long Winded) to specify the various points and stuff.

Might have to split it up into pages, and post it elsewhere online, for the sake of easier reading. It could be quite large, if I follow the proper format...

Okay, I've started to formalise the rules, and noticed a few minor gaps.

Firstly, the hand and field sizes. Secondly, what types of cards we're going to use, what their purpose is, etc...

So....Discuss!

I like Dreks first system.... you have to either outpost sombody or break their mind.... fits here perfectly

for hand size, i like 5....

For card types,

Spam (buff cards... Like instants in magic, do their effect then go to postcount)

Characters: (battling characters, summoned via insanity)

Artifacts: (items of powe, likw enchantments... Pimp Hat, Power Pole, Want of Prang, Bling of doom, infinity gauntlets, swiss army knife from hell, )

And Avatar (Effectivly you, cntains modifiers that effect your deck)

Official Rules

Winning a Duel
The outcome of a Duel is decided according to the following rules:
Each player begins with 100 Life. Life decrease as a result of damage calculation after battle. You win a Duel if all your opponents have 0 life or less. If any two or more players have their life reduced to 0 at the same time, and there are no other players in the game, those players tie the game.
If any players deck runs out of cards during a duel, the first player that is unable to draw is declared the winner.
If a cards special effect is activated that declares you the winner, then you win the game.

Getting Started:
Preparing your deck.
The deck used for dueling must contain precisely 50 cards. Each player must also choose one avatar. An avatar is any character type card, that is not prohibited from being an avatar from its effect.

Gameplay
Duels are conducted as follows
All players pass their deck to the player on their left, and then shuffle the deck they recieve. They pass the decks back, play their avatar face down into the avatar zone and the decks are played face down in the deck zone.
Turn order is now determined. Then each player draws cards from their deck, and the duel begins.

The Game Mat:
(Insert crappy drawing of game map here)

Avatar Zone: Where you play your avatar.
Sig Zone: Where you play your signature card.
Character Zone: Where you play your characters. Each character takes up space on your character zone. If they take up too much space, no more characters can be played.
Post Zone: All the non-character cards are played here. If there is not enough room on the Post Zone, you may not play any more cards.
Grave Zone: When character cards are destroyed, they get sent here.
Deck Zone: Place you draw cards from.
RFG Zone: When cards are removed from the game, they are sent here.
Postcount: When non-character cards are destroyed, they are sent here.

Contents of the Grave, RFG and Postcount are public knowledge, unless stated by another cards effect.

Well...

...I like it.

Also, for Drek's first post on this page, I honestly like both dueling rulesets, but I think we should go with the first one for the main, canonical rules; but be able to decide on which ruleset before the game starts.

I also had a thought that there could be a command so that it switches rulesets in the middle of the game. Like, for example, we're playing normal rules (1st ruleset), but I challenge my opponent to an avatar duel, which works better with the second ruleset, and could last for just one turn.

But I honestly like both dueling rulesets, and I think we've got some solid rules here :)

Look here!

I have set up a site for the purposes of displaying the rules as they evolve.

Now focus, people: Now that we have the basis for the game, we need types of cards.
Characters = obvious.
Posts= obvious.

Anything else? And what do those cards have, or do?

Okay...So nobody wishes to discuss card types?
Fine.

Characters have the following stats:
Spirit: Determines how much you spend to play a card. May need to change this stats name.
Insanity: Determines what cards can be equipped to it.
Willpower: Cards defensive power.

Post: Used to attack opponent, or for one shot effect.
Spirit: Determines what card you can equip this to. Can only be equipped to a card with insanity equal to or less than this stat.
Or, if you're using it one shot, how much you need to cost to activate.
Insanity: The cards attack power. Only used when attacking.

Godmod: Used only for effect.
Spirit: How much you need to spend to activate.

Picture: Generates token(s) with certain stats on your side of the field.
Spirit: Activation cost

Artefact: Like Post, except not equipped to any card. Allows avatar to attack once a turn, using the artefact. May not use more than one artefact a turn. Artefacts may require some sort of payment to maintain on the field, I dunno.

Signature: The signature card can be any type of card. At all. Just pay the spirit, and it stays there. What's its purpose? Simple. The signature card boosts the avatars stats while in play.

okay, the artifacts?

I'd say make it so that if some upkeep cost is not paid, the opponent has the chance to pay a theft cost and move it to their side of the field.
