For a while now, I've been working on and off on an RPG. My experiences with this have taught me the following.
Firstly, I can code games fairly well.
Secondly, the ability to code a game means jack-shit unless you have a design in front of you.

So, I've been working on a design. Make sure I know everything I need to know before touching the code.
However, while I know what the destination of the story is going to be, the route to that point has many stumbling blocks. There are other issues, but those are the most prevelant.

Anyway, if you want to help me out with any of these issues (in particular, the finer plot details), check here.

Also, 10000th post. I should like my title changed to "Smegheaded Ninja."

question. how big a part is the bard, Lyla gonna play? I've never really played a game where the bard plays a big part in the story or anything. I'd kinda like to see it.

Well, I have a few ideas for her...I'm writing up the plot as it currently is. But there are other things I need to do and I can only update the site from a Uni comp. Which means, whatever I write up just now(not a damned chance of finishing it today, though) will be it until monday. Except what gets posted here, of course.

A more specific answer to your question, though.
Lyla plays a reasonable role in the plot. Like when Bel gets hit by a rather nasty poison attack, and she feels guilty, and persuades the party to help her find the antidote...And they meet with one of The Four during that quest, thus realising just how much trouble the world is really in.

Please, for the love of all that is holy, make it so that halfway through the game the bard becomes a required character for the party and starts kicking serious ass.

yes. Bard kicking ass is a MUST. I suggest making bosses succeptable to status effects. think about it! no one would expect it! if not, give the Bard some Magic Sword techniques. I never understood why they didn't do that in the first place with bards. they seem the best set up for a good Firesword3 attack.

ooh ooh. another idea. give the bard a Singing Sword! one that will annoy her in and out all day long with annoying banter! one that levels up as she does! one that, if it gets pissed off with the players remarks will become unusable untill the player apologizes!

anyways, how wacky can I get with monster designs?

As wacky as you desire. Really. So long as they look decent within the sizes specified, I don't mind.

so I can make the green guy from hitchhikers guide to the galaxy? sweet!

I'd also like to see some of the characters comment on the monsters in the game randomly, like in ff10. for instance, when fighting a slime, Lyra might freak out that your fighting animated pudding. a small touch like that would be nice.

so what did you think of my other ideas?

Lyla is already a lot more balanced that most Bards are.The singing sword might be an interesting idea, although I'm not too sure about the levelling thing. You did see the menu page, right?

ah. ok. well I just thought that the weapon's stats could improve as her level goes higher. no big deal on that part. I just wanted to give the player a reason to keep using that weapon throughout the game. maybe at points in the story it gets upgraded?

ooh... inside the sword... is the personality of Simone belmont! or at least someone with the same personality!

Works for me.

Hehehee. I'm now picturing a Belle version of Lylacor.

Also, I've put the plot page up...It's only the beginning of it, but yeah. Might put the end up later, and see if the middle can be figured out.

Equipment that gains experience?

Sounds like Practice Effect.

And I have a monster idea.

I will be checking the required parameters soon.

Newb, the required parameters are literally "It still looks good when shrunk to fit within either a 64*64 or 32*32 pixel space. Or 32*64 or 64*32. Whichever is good."

hmm... the term "Load Bearing Boss" must be used at least once in the game.

pretty good so far.

okay, about the load bearing boss.

perhaps he could be holding up the ceiling with one arm while fighting with the other?

And as for monsters, how about a...

SWARM OF PIRATE-NINJAS!

Yeah, self referential stuff like that will likely be peppered throughout the game...Alongside NPCs that are annoyed when you randomly talk to them/steal their shit/walk into their house uninvited.
That was to Red.

Nicely done Newb. Should be able to find a use for that.

I can just see the conversation now.

*Party's 43'rd battle with Pirate ninja's and 2 gold bugs.*

Ray: Doesn't it bother anyone that we're fighting 20 ninja's and 2 bugs, and the bugs are the stronger opponents?

Rikav: ... its best not to think of it.

or...
*Gold bug drops 27 GP and an Iron Helm*

Ray: What the hell? how the hell could a gold bug the size of my pinky be carrying around an iron helm? and what the hell did he need 27 gold for? it makes no sense!

Maih: your not going to get very far with an attitude like that, brother!

Hehehehe. You know I was planning on taking the resulting plot and perhaps make a webcomic out of it.

Screw that. Too much work. :^_^:

Ray: I'm not touching that helm. its possessed!

Rikav: What to you mean? its for a fighter class. its perfect for you!

Miah: it'll increase your Def!

Ray: See? Right there! that! its making you say all these wierd things! and I'm not gonna touch it! it appeared in thin air!

Miah: no, it didn't. the monster dropped it!

Ray: your telling me a monster the size of my little toe is carrying around a helmet the size of my head? and this helm just somehow materializes when i kill it? its not possible! its possessed! Bad Spirits!

Rikav: just trust me and put the damn helm on...

Ray: Bad Spirits! BaAAAad!
