I hope you answered "yes!"

...and then "no," afterwards, because otherwise it would be confusing.

The World Community Grid lets you download some mysterious "program" that lets your very own computing machine work for the greater good of humanity when you're not using it, or even when you are (spooooky). Help develop anti-AIDS drugs, fight Cancer, and cure Muscular Dystrophy, as well as some other things that I've already forgotten! And it's all free*!

If anyone wants to make a CSNESF team, feel free, because I have no idea how to, and I'm already a contributing member of the qwantz.com team, and I'm no traitor.

So, uh, yeah. Do it and stuff.

The end.

[Edit: Here's the CSNESF Team page rar.]

[size0]* as in you don't pay any money at all for any reason.

I answered " What?" and "Huh?" respectively.

I can see how Seti@home would work, but how are they gonna use my computers idle time to cure cancer?

Magic.

Ok, so the thing says that right now for Muscular Dystrophy (I get assigned that one a lot), it's "calculating protein-protein interactions" dealing with "proteins that play a role in neuromuscular diseases."

So stuff like that.

My compy can't run it, but my roomate's does. He leaves his compy on 24/7 to do it! Now we just need to find a way to pay extra for the power bill... :P

Does this thing spread cancer to others in hopes of 'curing' it?

...Just curious.

...

My computer runs slower when I add new programs to it. Runs acceptably with what I have now.

I... have to agree with Zap here. The internet is not to be trusted, even if it is supposedly for a worthy cause.

I answered no then yes.

Honestly, I don't think my computer HAS any idle processes. I'm always using them on bit torrent or trillian or sommat.

...well fine then. DON'T cure Cancer.

...ok, I didn't want to have to tell you this, but I guess I have no choice.

All of these cures? They're not for people. They're for puppies.

Sad, sad, HIV-positive, cancerous puppies with muscular dystrophy.

Alright, I know what needs to be done.

We need to get a lot of kindling together. Start a big bonfire.

Then we throw the puppies in.

Mmm, crispy...

Got it running, I figure, if AGV doesn't hate it tonight, then I'll be good.
Hey, the comic seems to be updating kind of regularly. Maybe we should vote to spread the word.

Looks like 23.2% for tonight on my current project (Muscular DYS), I gave the thing as much freedom as it needs and 10GB of disk space, assuming it uses the right HD

...I don't trust this. At all.

If modern science hasn't done it yet, a comp running on idle time won't o_o; It just won't.

The theory behind it is that the research is very CPU-intensive. Rather than buying five new supercomputers to run various algorithims and recombinations, they get five hundred people to run the program on the background of their normal computer.

I'm not saying it's 100% guaranteed safe (although it probably is) and you're a baby-killer if you don't download it, but the theory there is valid and it's been around for a while. My parents run this one on their computer, and Seti At Home was around when I was in middle school.
Live and learn - or die and teach by example.
