Somewhat random question, but would you realistically have started reading Captain SNES if it were a in prose form (books, fan fiction, etc.) and not a webcomic?

Feel free to discuss.

Feel free to move this topic admins if it's in the wrong place.

Me now? Probably not. Heck, I'm not even sure if I would have started reading it as a webcomic now if I had never heard about it.

Me about eight years ago when I first discovered the internet? Quite possibly.

No, and to be honest when I first found the comic it didn't draw me at first either (very early on).

After there was a bit of archive I was able to get in to it more.

The Guardian Legend - By Red Silvers (VLP): Our Red Silvers continues to find the weirdest worksafe pictures of the game's protagonist, a plane that transforms into a waifu.

Super Metroid - By Red Silvers (VLP): I think it's safe to say at this point, that Samus ain't leaving her suit once Red Silvers finally gets around the finishing this game.

Fantastic Dizzy - By Red Silvers (VLP): Fresh off his recent run of Super Metroid, Red Silvers tackles yet another, err... classic? (Egg-scuse me for being confused about Red Silvers' next choice.)

Without the first thing I see being Magus and Mario's sprites beside each other, I highly doubt my interest would have been piqued. But the same can be said of a lot of things.

Its fair to say I used to be a lot more open to fanfics, but years on the internet have jaded me.

I used to read fanfics, too, mostly in the same era in which I found CSNES. The problem is, I have trouble maintaining interest any writing of considerable length, and always have, which would be where CSNES flunked in written form. Archive binging on a given comic is a great deal more fun.

Well, I first encountered the comic through Zelda Comic's link page. The title amused me as I watched Captain N as a kid. First page was the one where Gato Frog and Lucca crashed on Mysidia. That alone peaked my interest, having recently played both games. From there, just read the entire thing and fell for it.

Don't think it would've had quite the same hold if it'd been prose. It would've been fantastically written... and probably finished by now... but it wouldn't have that initial "what... the hell?" effect that gets people reading it.

I'd at least try it, but that all depends on the style it was written in.

Probably not if only just because webcomics are infinitely easier and for me (A guy who loves reading dialogue but hates reading setting descriptions) more enjoyable to read.

Come to think, a lot of the enjoyment of the comic comes from the way Jaydee sets out the panels. We get a much better vantage point, get to see multiple things going on at the same time... Not to mention the visual gags throughout the comic wouldn't transfer well.

It would have been an entirely different kind of story if written as prose.

No kidding. While I can enjoy a poorly-written book with a concept I like (hello, Mr. Turtledove), it's a lot more likely I'll read a book that's actually well-written.

Also, sprite comics are inherently rather limited in several ways, so the closest conversion would probably actually be in script format rather than prose.

Yes, I would've read it.
Still would read it now.

Honestly if it meant faster updates I'd be fine with pages of
prose dialogue interspersed with comic pages for when action happens.

Comics are a very visual medium. And sprite... sorry, "Pixel Art" comics are even more so. For CSNES to be done as a narrative, it would be a completely different experience. So, sans poor writing by whoever does the conversion, you bet your GP I'll read it.
