And so, we learn that Kain can't run from the battle. He's trapped, and no doubt so angry that he'll just keep on attacking the cat until he drops. Or he's about to drop to the ground mumbling to himself incoherently.

Does the PrtyGrl know Dispell? She's probably too low level, and it might not work on the cat in the hat anyways.
Hey, the comic seems to be updating kind of regularly. Maybe we should vote to spread the word.

This brings up an interesting question- in-universe, what exactly defines what is and isn't a "boss"? It can't be the monsters themselves, or everything would turn the "can't run" effect on...

Hah! I just realised now. The christmas special was a Grinch parody, and now we're seeing a story involving a cat in a hat!

There are boss events, and special event battles that you can't run from in that particular FF game (And world, I assume). So the cat is more likely a special event that can be stopped via enough time passing, the "Hero" party getting killed, or some other special thing. Most likely this battle will end when the cat decides to flee, disappearing from the game map entirely while Kain is too injured to pursue.
No fanfare, no special effects... Just Jon

Nah, I reckon the cat is up to something else here. Something related to PrtyGrl, maybe?

Right, but what force defines a "special event"? Its not the programmers, since they wouldn't account for Shrodinger, and its not the Soverign, since the Cat is acting against her...

The same force that stopped Alex from getting a Game Over when he lost to Kain, because it was a 'scripted battle'?

The Guardian Legend - By Red Silvers (VLP): Our Red Silvers continues to find the weirdest worksafe pictures of the game's protagonist, a plane that transforms into a waifu.

Super Metroid - By Red Silvers (VLP): I think it's safe to say at this point, that Samus ain't leaving her suit once Red Silvers finally gets around the finishing this game.

Fantastic Dizzy - By Red Silvers (VLP): Fresh off his recent run of Super Metroid, Red Silvers tackles yet another, err... classic? (Egg-scuse me for being confused about Red Silvers' next choice.)

Scripted... maybe the action of talking somehow inhibits the ability to run?

How would that affect the random encounters that Alex kept dying in?

There's some scripted battles you're expected to win, obviously.

That was a shoddy random number generator?

Damn. Kain's tried to attack Schrodinger 2784 times. And that's in ways the cat can counter it.

Schrodinger is a character, therefore an important battle. You can't run from important battles.

Then what defines a character? A name? The Antlion is an important battle, but its just one of its kind, no name provided.

Clearly plot defines important or not.

Actually that wasn't the only antlion...You get to meet more in Final Fantasy IV: The After Years...but they're smaller and don't yield experience points.

And to answer your questions I'd say anything that's a boss is important (since usually you face one of them) but also, characters are important as well, characters have names, and personalities, and they're not random monsters/minions you simply fight and kill.

Ex. By my definition, The Fat Chocobo is a character, Antlion DX is not.

Schrodinger is DEFINITELY not a random monster encounter so yeah, Kain couldn't run away anyways.

Saaay. Waitaminute. The Met Hat can protect against any sort of damage. But can it protect against...STATUS EFFECTS?

Depends. Does it prevent Flash Stopper and the like?

@Zap: I think Videoland itself chooses if a battle is a 'boss' or not. It's been stated to have it's own consciousness. Kind of like how people who say "I am invincible" get smacked by a treas-*CRASH!*

...okay, I deserved that.

Re: Antlions.

Also you go there to get sand pearls as Edward, and it turns out that the bard was right. Without Zemus's influence, they really are docile creatures that don't attack humans.

By the way, I wonder what kind of effect the sequel has on this story, if any.

Is the sequel set in stone, therefore everyone has to survive?
Does the fact that the sequel says nothing about that time Edward went nuts and terrorized Baron (and blew it up once) mean that Edward is wrong about his nature as just a game (in a sort of "Many worlds theory", "Myst"y kind of parallel world thing, where every fictional story is true as a result of infinite universes), and that what he's doing now is really his own choice?

I dunno. Bleh. Waxing philosophical on not enough sleep.
