So not only do touched sprites know they're games, but they also have access to player abilities. I wonder if they can enable cheat codes if they progress far enough. |

Maybe those who are touched are like incomplete game masters or a game master is a touched human and game sprites can't handle it? |

Well, Omega Energy seems to be powering both the touched and the gamemaster, right? Or something like that? |

I think you're looking at this the wrong way. This isn't about what the Touched are, or even about what the Game Master is. It's about what the Sovereign is. We know that she can manipulate fate with a remarkable subtlety, that those Touched by her gain an awareness of the real world, and that at her full power she can see through time as though it were a sheet of glass. I think that the Sovereign of Sorrow, like Alex, is from the real world. I'm also beginning to think that she originally worked on creating the games that define what Videoland is -- this would explain her abilities, as well as those demonstrated by the most recent Sorrow-touched. |

Yeah, I think this best defines the Sovereign as having powers that stem from the same source as Alex's, probably Omega Energy. If she's really Hope Keene, as her familiarity with Alex would indicate, that would explain both the high Omega levels and the ability to use them like a Gamemaster- maybe she inherited the abilities from her father? |

This pretty much seals the deal for me. The Sovereign of Sorrow is obviously a human from our world. Like Alex and Kevin she possesses Omega energy, and now, she's even got access to Gamemaster powers. |

Hang on! I always reckoned that the abilities were in the tools, not the persons. I mean, has Kevin ever been able to Pause or Super-Strafe without the Control Pad? Granted, the Sovereign can be using this lady as an spoke-mouth and manipulating the scenes from where she really is. Unless the Sovereign slipped the (NES) Control Pad to this prisoner before she was captured, with foreknowledge of this meeting. That would solidify the connection to the Royal Family. (Could still be Lana instead of Hope, though...) Then again.. we never did see the resolution of the Battle of The Tower of Prayers. Could it be that Control Pad and we have a gap of info to fill now? (And hence the near-month-long RL delay) Alex did imply that he suffered a loss in that battle though we haven't yet seen the resolution. (And, yes, I know that the upcoming shower scene was the last panel of that comic; I'm thinking it was narrative counter-balance. Or perhaps distraction. After all, we did have a full arc just to get to why Schroedinger had the Met Hat where we could've just had it shown then and there without much narrative disruption. I'm guessing that Ryan forgot about the Hat since it wasn't seen since (early) Act I; otherwise, we would've had a slight interruption to show that punchline and we'd go back to Alex right afterwards; like what happened in the beginning of Act 4.) Oh, and for the record, we do not need a resolution to Koopa Loss #464. Unless there is something of plot significance there... And even then, we don't need to see it until Mario or Magus get back on the scene. Just trying to evaluate all of the dangling plot threads... (with two others being hold-states until the players can be gathered in the proper place at the proper time.) Wait a sec... that last link. Spoony says that "The Sovereign can only enhance pre-existing traits in a sprite." And I doubt that any Sprite has access to Pause Tricks. (In-Game Time Stoppers work differently, I would imagine, and be subordinate to "Pauses".) So unless the Love Interest in Soulblazer has the innate ability to stop (or slow) time, then she can't do it with just Omega Energy. Which means she either has a Control Pad... ... or she's the Sovereign Herself. After all, she did not speak in the Prison at all until now. Or, again, she could merely be the "Mouth of the Sovereign", as above. Which means that this could be what she could say to Frog would they to meet:
Taken from The Lord of the Rings Book 5 Chapter 10. |

That makes me wonder if Alex did get that pack of cards that would "make him invincible" or not. I'm interested. How the two know that the girl would be able to use the pause ability? |

They knew the touched had some crazy abilities, not necessarily pause. I think. They've been guarding the touched for awhile, they've been taking notes. |
Hey, the comic seems to be updating kind of regularly. Maybe we should vote to spread the word.

Which brings be back to my original question: How can one institute that particular style of "pause" without a control pad? The only other possible explanation is that the "Control Pads" are merely foci or even "magic feathers"... and looking back on Cynicism's visit, this point may be argued. Then again, if that was the case, then why did we never have an episode in the series with that particular moral? |

Perhaps the Sovereign keeps it on her person, and has paused the entirety of Video Land to intimidate via her minion. Perhaps she is flooded with the energy that the control pad used. Like the light and dark magic of a slim time frame in Europe, keeping the power in an artifact one step removed from yourself lets you use magic without being corrupted by the devil. Perhaps since Soul Blazer's pause did not make the screen gray, did not display 'PAUSE' and would display the location, this is meant to symbolize how she is no longer a part of her game, but something else. I don't even know what game, if any, that pause is from. I don't remember the world going b&w for Keven, even. This one is not an answer so much as pointing out that it is strange. Hmm. Lisa could hold up the plot and have her dreams invaded by the hero, get kidnapped, and get released by some manner other than said hero beating up the boss. She is daughter to the scientist who started her world's troubles, and friend to several important NPC macguffins. She learned only an incomplete part of plot of her game, although she isn't the most clueless named character. I can see a little of that being tangentially related to this scene, but little of her past is reflected here. How much of that is because she is in someone else's thrall, and how much is because she's only been in 2 comics? |

The first option is basically: "Lisa is 'The Mouth of the Sovereign'."
The second option is "foci, but the powers can escape but not without price." Or was the "price" already paid? But you raise an interesting point on the last. I've never played Soulblazer, though I have played Illusion of Gaia. Being the Mad Scientist's daughter brings the question of how much of said scientist's abilities can be made hereditary, and therefore innate, and therefore enhanceable. |

You know, they mentioned that she was a "Level Three" and wasn't considered much of a threat until she started talking. It could be that those of that level are little more than husks that the SoS can act through, with little to nothing remaining of their former videogame personalities and lacking a will of their own, making them docile. She seemed harmless enough until she heard Alex say his name. I can see why the guards would be unnerved about this though. It would be like wheeling a coma patient past only for them to sit up and start conversing with a complete stranger with familiarity as if nothing at all was odd about the situation. Did the Capt. N show ever clarify the area of the Pause function of the controller could cover? Could it's reach cover the entirety of Videoland? Another option could be that another of the Sovereigns minions has it and she just manipulated that one to be within range of this puppet and activated it. |

Illusion of Gaia had a pause function like that. In fact, most people needed to use it to find that 1 necessary game item to go on. I think it was confirmed that the pause function on Kevin's power-pad only worked in a localised area. |

The thing to remember, (I'm sorry i read most replies but not all) is that DR Wily made a working controller all by himself. So this proves really nothing about the origins of the girl. Sadly Edit, keep going with the comic, we'll hang in there to the end! (Hopefully the comics end and not ours though) |

Ok, finally found the comic Alger was referencing. Still, you would need someone with good technical knowhow in order to reverse engineer an NES controller. And, though Lucca's been touched by the mask, she's not yet completely under its control. But, again, we go back to Mad Scientist's Beautiful Daughter there in the topic comic... The only missing link now is how could Wily and Lisa make controllers separately? Kevin's controller was one-of-a-kind in Videoland, for it was not of Videoland. |
