Oh. Oh! This... well, yes. This is kind of obvious in hindsight, but still. Yikes.

But you know the really unsettling part? Alex and Ryan are experiencing similar emotional reactions to this scene.

Okay, yeah, this settles is, Alex is going to have about fifteen different vaguely psychotic girls pining for him, one for every one of his characters named Alex...
This cannot possibly end well.

I'm guessing it's a custom sprite, based off of Lisa's game. I.E. a spriteless character, like Lisa's mom, whom the Sovereign is using as a shell.

But if it was Lisa's mom, Lisa would be looking for Car.

The Guardian Legend - By Red Silvers (VLP): Our Red Silvers continues to find the weirdest worksafe pictures of the game's protagonist, a plane that transforms into a waifu.

Super Metroid - By Red Silvers (VLP): I think it's safe to say at this point, that Samus ain't leaving her suit once Red Silvers finally gets around the finishing this game.

Fantastic Dizzy - By Red Silvers (VLP): Fresh off his recent run of Super Metroid, Red Silvers tackles yet another, err... classic? (Egg-scuse me for being confused about Red Silvers' next choice.)

The game's text in the third panel makes me wonder if Lisa's another Mask Touched. The ones we know of seem to mention something about the future each time.

I recognize her. It is the Queen in Soul Blazer. You release her in the castle level. At first she's nice, but then you find out she encouraged her husband's quest for wealth, and kidnaps Lisa to get her dad to cooperate by the end of that level. Betrayal stings me yet. I take games too seriously. Not that it's relevant since the SoS takes female royalty's form no matter what.
Hey, the comic seems to be updating kind of regularly. Maybe we should vote to spread the word.

It's just the dialogue screen directly from the game. And she's very heavily focused on the past, and a past promise, which suggests the Shard.

I recognize her. It is the Queen in Soul Blazer. ... Not that it's relevant since the SoS takes female royalty's form no matter what.

Not immediately relevant, but the little fact at the end makes me wonder: It was Zelda that gave Alex the tools he needed to destroy Arrogance. Or was it really Zelda? After all, the Inner Evils want to kill Alex so that he doesn't meet the Sovereign. Could that "Zelda" merely be a false flag disguised well?

Wha! Some orange fuzzball just flashed by right out of nowhere! Hey, was it carrying a capital H?

In any event, perhaps the one-year-later reunion has not happened yet in this Lisa's timeline. That Lisa could've been "visited" by the Shard during that one-year period.

But then... are the designated love interests extensions of the Sovereign? Or do they see her as a rival? And if the latter, do they unwittingly serve her anyway?

And also it makes me think of the ending of Lufia where she splits into two parts: one an amnesiac human, the other as the Sinstral with full memories yet to be reincarnated. Perhaps it is Erim but not Lufia that is seeking for her lost love... lost not to the shadows but merely to her split-off alter ego. Or perhaps old age.

And finally, why do I want the end of Act 7 to be a scene where Ryan unwittingly unlocks a chamber containing all of these designated love interests?

Probably so that I can see Lucca refer to Ryan as "dickless" at the start of Act 8.
It's a flimsy pretext, but I'm sure that the N-Team have gotten away with worse.

No, she pretty clearly says that she knows "that" Alex was merely a shadow of the real one.

it's all still scary. And I never noticed that she always takes the form of female royalty. Hmmm. Then again she IS a Sovereign. And there are so many queen's for her to take the form of... oh Marle will go nuts if she takes Leene's form.

So, the heroes are shells for the Gamemaster and the princesses/queens are shells for the Sovereign.

Not all heros- remember Cecil and Crono.
I think its just ill-defined heros, heros with no canonical name, and very little canonical characterization, backstory, or pre-existing interpersonal connections.
The royalty thing, we haven't seen enough to refute...

It's almost too bad that there weren't any good free-form RPGs in the SNES era (think Fallout series or Elder Scrolls). Alex's heroes from that sort of game would be interesting to see.

There was one ultima game at least. It had day and night and I never managed to leave the first because I was busy stalking Lord British and the hobo who partied in his throne room at night.

Technically, there's Elder Scrolls games from that era too, but they might not have been Alex's style.

And I never noticed that she always takes the form of female royalty.

So what form would she take in games where there is no female political (or other sort of) leader? (The "Political Leader" rubric contains Queens/Princesses but also democratic rulers as well as Queens/Princesses in all but name.)

On the other hand, looking at a previous spoiler, Soulblazer's Queen can still be considered a direct source of sorrow for Lisa herself, as she kidnapped her to coerce her dad. The spoiler is in common to all appearances of the Sovereign save for her "true" form (that she revealed to Daos. And even that may not be her actual true form but merely the mask only.) Peach has caused all sorts of sorrow for the Koopalings, Queen Zeal is the source of all of Magus' woes, which is doubly fitting since she's his mom, ... and that's all I can recall.

Would the Sovereign have appeared to Edward as Anna? We never saw her visit him directly, did we?

In any event, it's as Zap said: We haven't seen enough to refute the connection. Nor have we seen enough to validate it.

And in thinking of Marle... It could really be either of her parents, really (either the dead mother or the once-estranged father). Which, again, makes me think of Ghostbusters

ALEX:  What the Fu<k?!  I fu<king thought that the fu<king Sovereign was supposed to be a fu<king Princess!
MEGA:  It's whatever it Mega-wants to be.
LUCCA:  Well whatever it is it's going to have to get by us!  Go get him Alex!

Had to switch Peter and Ray's roles here (and give Alex (Peter) one of Winston's lines to boot) in order to make the scene work. And I have no idea about this board's policy on F-Bombs. BTW, I'm think that Winston would be played by Sabin. Not sure who would play Janine yet...

Oh crap, so it's even worse than I'd thought. She knows who and what Alex is and what his role was in Soul Blazer. Brr.

And I'm still wondering what's become of Alex Blazer. Did Alex play Illusion of Gaia and Terranigma?
